Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

It was a nice draft for Sioux recruits.

DAY 1
#15 - Los Angeles - Derek Forbort
#30 - NY Islanders - Brock Nelson

DAY 2
#113 - Montreal - Mark MacMillan
#149 - Philadelphia - Michael Parks
#156 - Tampa Bay - Brendan O'Donnell
#165 - Boston - Zane Gothberg
#180 - Chicago - Nick Mattson

Very good draft indeed for UND. The highest number of draft picks this year of any college.

I can't wait to see Forbort and Nelson this fall! The rest of the draft picks are all 2011 or 2012 recruits.

UND and Maine are the only schools to have produced both an NBA and NHL coach of the year. John Tortorella and Rick Carlisle attended Maine. Phil Jackson and Tippett are UND's guys.
Strangely, DU needs to get to work on the NHL coaching award. Gregg Popovich was NBA coach of the year in 2003 and attended DU Grad school.

By my count that makes about 15 draft picks on next season's roster. 17 if you included D. Toews and Fienhage.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Happy has a bit of a point saying many of the best hockey players in the country come from Minnesota. How you can have all that talent with such a large flagship institution and consistently fail to get past the first round of the NCAAs is a real mystery. Unless the Suck Factor is just too great to overcome.

but, somehow I thought Minnesota has won 2, yes 2, national championships since UND won one. did I miss something, or is UND almost winning a championship for ten years in a row the standard now?

and that always guarantees success, since everyone knows, draft picks like being on the 4th line, not getting PP time, and waiting 2 or 3 years for major ice time.

Um, yeah?

One just has to look at how successful Minnesota is with all those draft picks they have.

Oh, who am I trying to kid!?;)

Easy p iss flaps, remember UM has been the skid mark in the WCHA's underwear the last couple years and it doesn't look like that will be changing anytime soon. ;)

Minnesota's standard is bitter fans I guess...

Ok, fess up... who peed in Happy's Cheerios this morning?

Oh, come on, it's the off season, and what better than derail a UND thread for a little summer humor. it's how I keep in shape. Typically they are pretty stupid, but humorous.

Heck, at UMN, you can have high draft picks playing on the 1st line and getting PP time and they still leave at midseason. :)

Ten-year interims might be the standard, but never 25.

Short article on Nelson:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...-in-miracles-drafting-brock-bloodlines-nelson

He’s an adept goal scorer and a truly gifted skater with legitimate end-to-end speed on the rush. Defensively, he’s not afraid to get his nose dirty along the boards and is among the best faceoff men in this entire draft class. Brock’s skill set is still raw, but the combination of size, high end skill and character is extremely rare and he could very well be a special NHL talent.

Well Happy I will humor you with a few up-beat comments:

1. No matter what happened last year, it's a brand new season and Lucia is a good coach that has the ability to produce NCs.

2. Cepis might be the best pick up for UM in 3 years and definitely will put points on the board this year.

3. It's tUM, sometimes tradition will win more games than talent by shear intimidation so your chances against UNO and BSU are better than average.

4. Barriball is back, Ness has another year of experience and workouts under his belt, and Kangas didn't play well enough to go anywhere so the only direction for him to go is up or to the bench leaving Patterson in net which isn't that bad of an ultimatum.

Will the goofs win the McNaughton? Probably not. Will they get home ice for the first round and be ranked top 25? Yep it's very likely. :)
