Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Looks like another great freshman class coming in. I hate waiting this long for the season to start...

Sounds like Toews is taking the Cup the Winnepeg for sure. I hope he finds time to swing through GF.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Watch for Toews on the cover of SI this week. It's a split cover - don't know what area he will appear in.

Nice interview with Toews featuring the EA Sports 2011 cover and video from the video game promo. Toews mentioned he will be in back in Winnepeg soon and may be blaying there in a charity hockey game. Not worried about any cover curse. Not after the 2010 cover athelete, Patric Kane, scored the Stanley cup winning goal.

Also NHL draft may feature several WCHA players in 1st round.

Nice award for Dave Tippett - NHL coach of the year!

Tippett wins Jack Adams Award

UND's Dave Tippett is the NHL coach of the year.

Tippett received the Jack Adams Award on Wednesday night in Las Vegas, becoming the first former Sioux player to earn the honor.

Tippett, in his first season with the Phoenix Coyotes, led the bankrupt franchise to their best season ever. Upon accepting his award, Tippett even cracked a joke about the Coyotes, who are owned by the NHL.

"This is one of those nights where a lot of people stand up and thank owners," he said. "I would do that, except I don't know all 29 of them."

Tippett also thanked video coach Steve Peters, who also is a UND alum.

Tippett will be honored with a spot on UND's NHL wall in the basement of Ralph Engelstad Arena.

UND and Maine are the only schools to have produced both an NBA and NHL coach of the year. John Tortorella and Rick Carlisle attended Maine. Phil Jackson and Tippett are UND's guys.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Geez, Happy, some great, great players never win titles in their respective sports. Surprised you would even use something like this.

I am just so surprised, how after listening to UND fans say over and over how UND has had more talent for the last ten years, including Jonathan Toews, and god himself, that's right, god himself, that Minnesota managed to win Two National Championships in that time, and UND, none. Kinda makes all the crap that was shoveled at Woog kinda undeserved if UND and hakstool can't win with even more talent, now doesn't it. We know the cup is coming to Minnesota for sure. but it would be pretty funny if JT hauls the cup to Canada, and spites North Dakota.

Sadly, that would be MN's greatest hockey accomplishment of the last 3 seasons. Unless you count Final Five Participant as an "accomplishment". :) ;)

Of course, they didn't even get that honor last year. :)

Actually, since I love all Minnesota hockey, I would say that the two Ncaa championships won by UMD would be the best accomplishments. Of course, any http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hockey_Day_Minnesota, or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota_high_school_boys_hockey would still be better than any day that has ever happened in North Dakota to begin with.

The best thing to happen to UMN hockey in the last 3 seasons is a couple championships won by UMD's women's team. ;) :D

TSN's Bob McKenzie really gave UND props after Forbort's selection saying that the program is a pro player factory and knows how to develop players. Great to see Nelson be the last pick in the first round.:)

It's gonna be fun to watch these kids next year.......

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

the Kings traded up to get Forbort. He's a big dude! Can't wait to see him play. :)

He must have forgot about Finley.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Herald article on Nelson and Forbort:

http://www.grandforksherald.com/event/article/id/166731

He must have forgot about Finley.

After the Forbort pick, TSN's Bob McKenzie said: "There's no better place to go and develop than North Dakota. That place is a factory."

CBC Hockey Night in Canada analyst Cassie Campbell wrote that Forbort "will play under great coach Dave Hakstol at the U of North Dakota next season."

L.A. Kings amateur scout Tony Gasparini was asked if Forbort's choice of North Dakota was OK with them. He said: "Very much so, without question. That staff does an outstanding job and they have a track record of developing players who move on to the next level. He's in real good hands with coach Hakstol and coach Eades and coach Jackson. We couldn't be happier with the path he's chosen right now."

After the Nelson pick, TSN's Pierre McGuire said: "I'm just glad he's going to North Dakota, because again, we talk about how they develop hockey players there. It's a tremendous institution if you want to be a hockey player. They'll help you along. Jonathan Toews went there and did very, very well."

I suppose those type of quotes are better than having NHL teams pull their players out of other schools at midseason because they don't like the "development" being done there. ;) :)

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Happy has a bit of a point saying many of the best hockey players in the country come from Minnesota. How you can have all that talent with such a large flagship institution and consistently fail to get past the first round of the NCAAs is a real mystery. Unless the Suck Factor is just too great to overcome.

You do realize your somewhat taking a dig at your own team? How can the Gophers consistently suck when they continually get the cream of the crop when it comes to recruits. That's a bigger mystery.
