University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

I bought a vintage sticker pack off eBay a few years ago, and I finally got them scanned this past weekend.

Will probably make a couple jersey concepts with these over the summer. It's been a while since I've mocked one up, but I loved the way that one turned out.
I'm sure it was better that using the flagship crest....

Also UMaine Portland is strange to see

Usereau decommiting would make sense. Holt, Langlois, Usereau, and Coughlin all at LD wouldn't make sense and if Holt was going pro I would think it would be announced by now. My hot take for next year's roster is that after the NHL draft Evan Van Gorp is announced to come in next year. Maine needs at least one more center and he has had a great year as a 4th line center on a stacked London team.
Usereau was announced today

is there some deadline that we should know about the Poirier kid? Guys on facebook page saying by end of June? I'd think He would have to be in Orono for Summer school and Captain practices?

I believe all CHL players are technically eligible as of 8/1/25. Not entirely sure how that will affect and summer school and/or practices before that date.

Why would he have to be in for Summer School? I don’t think he can get his tuition covered by Maine until after 8/1.

I think Poirier will attend Carolina’s development camp again on July 8-11th. Then he would likely want to be part of the 6 week off ice optional camp at UMaine that virtually all UMaine players go to. I think they just work out heavy and train heavy on stamina. They also do stuff together for bonding. Walshy had them climb Katahdin. It would be neat for them to bring back that tradition. Cathedral and Knife’s Edge would give them a great perspective of Maine.

I thought Barr had them take summer classes so they are not overloaded during season?

Long time follower of the forum, finally decided to join. Haven’t missed a game since about 1980ish…I would put 99.9% on Poirier being announced very soon. Pretty sure Rousseau is coming too - best goalie tandem (again) in college hockey!
Absolutely love this. Add another forward or two (preferably someone who can play center if necessary) and we are in good shape.

At this point it definitely seems like another goalie is happening. Boija is excellent but another starter-quality guy to push him is a necessity. I am sure a competitive guy like Boija would welcome it too.

Can't imagine it's an easy pitch to prospective goalies, based on how much Boija played last year (especially in the portal-era where patience isn't a virtue). But maybe you can sell a guy like Rousseau that Boija is probably leaving after this season and there is a pretty clear path as the top option as Shea/Vecvanags arrives.

Yes, this is perfect for a rookie goalie to come in. Get an adjustment year, a year of working with Alfie on improvement areas, with few games and then be looking at leading the post Boija era tandem. If you were a rookie and had to adjust while having the pressure of carrying the team it might be too much and could be a bad start. This is a bit of a smoother transition. So I would think it would be prime for bringing in a ringer. I liked what I saw from Rousseau(Moncton(USHL)) in the post season of QMJHL and Memorial Cup. Let’s hope that rumor is true too.

Hopefully that's the pitch Barr is using. It would make sense why Maine didn't target any portal options in net.

Probably better suited for the recruits thread, but Rousseau scouting report from the 2024 EP Draft Guide:

It’s taken his third year of eligibility, but it looks like Mathis Rousseau has finally done enough to hear his name called at the NHL Draft. All it took was being the starting goaltender for Canada at the World Juniors. With a 5-foot-11, 172 pound frame, he has been continuously passed over by teams that value size over everything else. Now it’s his time.

The Halifax Mooseheads netminder impressed Hockey Canada’s goaltending brass with his agility and speed from post-to-post. If he isn’t the quickest goaltender available in the 2024 draft, he’s at least in the conversation. His ability to handle plays below the goal line is impressive, and his post-integration is pro-quality already. His hinge and seals on the post in reverse-VH are excellent, and he compliments that by being able to explode off the post with a push when a low-to-high pass is made.

Rousseau can still be quite erratic with his decision-making, especially when the play breaks down in front of him. He’s the type of goalie that likes to push the gas pedal even harder when the game speeds up, when he should actually be doing the opposite by trying to quiet his game down. He has a lot of time to learn to control his youthful exuberance, and the team selecting him in this year’s draft will have a fascinating project to work on.

Probably for sophomores through seniors…. I don’t think for freshman. They start in the fall. And the CHL kids aren’t elligible until after 8/1/25. So they can’t even sign up now. But it might be that they decide to take summer classes after their first year. They have to take at least 12 credit hours each semester for fall and spring semester.

The thing about Rousseau is that it was mentioned somewhere in here that he had strong options… Harvard and Michigan. But Maine is considered a goaltending premier destination. And Orono is closer to Montreal than Ann Arbor is. There is likely to be many more French speaking people on the team(Nobes, Nadeau, Pichette, Langlois, Usereau, Poirier, Gerrior, etc…) and in the stands even. Nevertheless, beating out Michigan and Harvard will be difficult.

Michigan might be out on Rousseau with the news that Jack Ivankovic has committed there, so probably one less team to worry about.
