University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Maine's position in the pairwise will very much hinge on Saturday night. A win puts Maine in third and should secure a top seed in the national tournament regardless of what happens in Boston. A loss could drop Maine all the way to seventh. The benefit of that may be that the committee could decide to stick both #1 Boston College and #2 Maine in Manchester.... All four #2 seeds could be from Hockey East.
That degree of a precipitous drop on the basis of one loss v. UML is actually possible?

Seems crazy, but I'll take your word for it.

Still, I can't root against my boys, no matter what the PW implications might be.

Call me overly sanguine, but I don't think that this team is a prohibitive underdog vs. any team out there. Not even close.

Thats going to piss people off. Pay for gold parking and have to take a shuttle.
On second line it says “There will be no change to VIP, Gold or ADA parking.”

Just the general fans are the ones that will get pissed off having to take shuttle. But hopefully they get there early enough so that it doesn’t delay them past opening face off.

Forward are pretty stacked but it’s surprising not to see Makar or Scott get a nod on the third team, same with Djurasevic over the UHN kid.
Lund, Richard, and Greene all have more points in conference play than Scott and Makar. So can’t be surprised by that.

Djuresevic though had better statistics in conference than Holt and Gagne. His CHIP rating is much higher than Gagne’s. His CHIP, +/-, ppg, blocked shots are all higher than Holts.

To me Djuresevic should be on the 3rd, then Holt also on 3rd, then Gagne left out. Based purely on meaningful statistics.

Other than that I don’t see any glaring omissions.

I happen to think Boija should have been first team. This isn't a slight at all to Fowler, who is an excellent goalie, and if I took my blue glasses off I could be convinced of Fowler being worthy of first team over Boija. But for it to be unanimous I found very eyebrow raising. I'm a huge fan of Holt, so I might have put him second team, and I agree Djurasevic was also probably worthy to be at least third team. I'm not too upset about Maine's lack of forwards, as mentioned previously, because Hockey East is loaded at forward and Maine did have some issues with scoring this season, especially in conference.

Actually, looking at Fowler and Boija's stats, I might have to take it back.

Guess it really does speak to the coaching staff and systems put in place to be ranked so high with such a bunch of slackers and talentless players . We’ve seen it all in the past, the distant past. Could be a motivation going forward

Well, Maine’s defense is good and goaltending is outstanding. As such Maine is 3rd in the country for fewest goals given up per game. Maine gets scoring by committee more than other teams and is 21st in the country in goals for per game.

I think that is reflected the the awards:

2nd Team Hockey East: Albin Boija
3rd Team Hockey East: Brandon Holt
Best Defensive Defensemen Runner Up : Brandon Holt
Best Defensive Forward Runner Up: Nolan Renwick
Best Sportsmanship Runner Up: David Breazeale

Only one forward got a mention and that was Renwick for being 2nd best defensive forward in Hockey East.

Add to that Djuresevic probably deserves that spot more than Gagnon(UNH).

So this is representative of a team with a great goalie, great defense, and balanced scoring lines with no superstar scorers.

That is exactly what Maine is and what Barr built.

If we look at recruits lined up for next year it is two high rated defensemen(NZ 4.0s) and solid yet not superstar forwards(NZ 3.75s). So he is putting a premium on highly rated defensemen. And for forward he appears to prefer the under-rated forward that plays with a chip on his shoulder.

I know he blew a gasket a couple times at Brad in game and it appeared to happen when he was turning pucks over up high for rushes against or times when Brad wasn’t back checking.

At the same time I think they need to have a few highly skilled guys to make a better power play and a bonafied top line. I feel like Maine has 3 balanced lines and a 4th that is pesky, but less likely to score.

UConn books a trip to the Garden with a 3-1 win over Providence. That should be enough to wrap up a #2 seed for the Huskies.

Western Michigan won the first game of its series with St Cloud State 6-2.

Pairwise remains
Minnesota
Maine
Western Michigan

...for tonight.

Where is your sense of adventure?

I don’t care what other teams make it, just want Maine to make it.

So it comes down to tomorrow night.

Win that one game because it is the most important.

Then if you can do that you are rewarded with a more important game.
it's the playoffs, all teams remaining are good. Just win
