University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Game day! Starts at 11 AM… Men’s Basketball Blackbears vs. Bryant College on ESPN2! Not sure how much of a chance they have but will be pulling for them, Go Blue!

Very amped for tonight. If at the start of the season you offered a deal where Maine would need to win one game to make to TD Garden and Hockey East semis we would have all taken that! Well, here we are. I hope the team has a sense of hunger for more than how they fizzled at the end of last season. One game this entire weekend is a luxury. Hopefully every guy on the team spares no expense, throws every ounce of energy into this game. Like to see Maine come out skating hard on a mission to prove any team wanting to go through Maine is going to have a bitch of a time.

I like last weeks lineup
Mitton has 10 points in 28 games. Califiore has 1 point in 21 games. Mitton is fast and physical. He can be plugged in on the Makar/Renwick line at RW which would allow Russell to go to third line RW, and Scholle to 4th line LW.

Freel/Scott/Nadeau
Makar/Renwick/Mitton
Fowler/Breen/Russell
Scholle/Komarov/Niemo

Then Pichette can be extra skater because he can play center or wing if in game injury happens to a forward. Califiore hasn’t played center for Maine this year.

I think that is the best balance of lines Maine can make. That 4th line may actually chip in a bit now. And with Mitton on that Renwick line it makes it even more miserable to play against as Mitton brings a lot of physical play and speed.

So much for Maine bball dancing. Not a good matchup for them. Bryant too fast, too big too etc. I've watched Maine play quite a few times toward the end of the season, need some shooters and some height. Still a great season for them to get to the finals. Ace Flagg comes in next season, can't wait to see how he helps.

Here is some video of Ace: https://youtu.be/nLPKDor0Hs0?si=sdGTgeIiyFcDtRnT

He played his Highschool senior year for Greensboro Day school in North Carolina where he helped that team win the state title. So he his team won the state title in Maine, Florida, and North Carolina. Not many people can say they won a state title in three different states. Seems like he is a solid forward At 6’8” but not a prolific scorer. 3rd on Greensboro in scoring per game and 2nd in rebounds per game. Likely a starter but not a guy carrying the team in scoring is my guess.

What you said.

Bryant is just too long and athletic for Maine, and Timberlake is an NBA-caliber player. They have a legit chance to win a game or two in The Dance, if they get a fair seed in the 1st round.

Still (and here I go again), Chris Markwood has been the best thing to happen to Maine hoops since Skip Chapelle. I absolutely love his coaching ability, and how he carries himself. He'd have to accept a gigantic home-town discount to sign a long term deal in Orono, but I hope like Hell that he does. He's a great coach and a class act.
