University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Oullette was certainly better than the Morris/Romeo tandem that followed. The pre-Swayman years were ROUGH. (Also shoutout Rob McGovern of course)
Romeo never really got a fair shake in his time here, it's a shame he left early.

He had a really good season at Ohio State after he sat out his transfer year (2.06 GAA, .927 SV% with 22 wins).

From what I heard from people back then (my freshman year being the year after he left) Romeo and Red both couldn't stand each other and it was well known, which is what led him to transfer.

Jimmy Howards in a class by himself

Albin looks better than Bish and in a class with Alfie and Frankie Doyle

9 overtime games this year, I’m a little nervous we’re destined for at least one loooooong heart in your throat night in these playoffs

Pretty impressive this will be Maine’s first season with single digit losses since 2004. This team has brass ones they’re fun to watch

What about Matt Delguidice? Only here 2 years but the second year he filled in for King when he got hurt, then I think Delguidice got hurt and Garth stepped in for a couple games. I think King broke a leg? and Matt got cut by a skate??
Darling was stellar, too, before he was dismissed from the team.

That must have been a kick in the balls for Tim.

Sure was for me.

I'm glad he found something at Ohio State, but I wouldn't say he never got a fair shake.

The transfer year is a little jarring to see at this point. Was he the last Maine player to have to sit?

That was a rough stretch.
I always liked how mcgovern got a shutout on senior night, his only game that season, against was it BU??
That was a fun game to be at.

It was in fact BU. Rob came out for the midday pick up games from time to time. He was an incredibly nice guy zipping it around with the sub-club level players. Even in goalie skates, he was putting us future beer leaguers to shame.

I do remember him coming out at public skate and stick and puck back in the day, and as you said he was dominant even in goalie skates. Cedric Lacroix also used to make appearances along with McGovern as well.

Balding like he was he looked like he was one of the Dads. Lol

Been out on the ice with a few of the maine players over the years, wasnt much fun as good as they are, relatively. Even the lady maine players were good out there, put me to shame for sure.

Going WAY back on this one, but Jeff Nord and Jimmy Torterella were mentioned in Hockey News as the best goalie tandem in college hockey c. 1981.

I saw them both many times, and they might not have been the "best", but they were pretty damned good.

Played pool at my dorm with Jimmy and John a few times, at the decrepit (but still standing) Corbett Hall. Visited briefly with Jim at Hamilton many years later when he was the head coach at Colby. He was nice enough to pretend to remember me, even if I suspect that he didn't.

One thing I can say with conviction is this: Jimmy inherited all the "nice" Torterella genes, as we've all noticed over the years, but I still root like Hell for John. I love telling people that I'm close friends with a Cup winner! ;)

Markwood has worked wonders at Maine. Hope he sticks around. Anybody know when his contract is up?
His original contract was four years when he came back in 2022.

No idea if there are any extension clauses that have been triggered but would imagine the university would be looking to get one done after this season.

I'm watching the BBall game right now. Maines defense was unreal, not sure hoow many steals they had but double digits anyway. They were in the passing lanes all night. No 3 Vermont was who killed Maine at the Pit a few weeks ago, he got no open looks, they could barely pass the ball to him. I will say every game I've seen Maine play this year there shooters are brick layers, if they had some shooters they would beat Bryant on Saturday.
