University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

No quit in these guys. A good tie as was said, and Maine got better as it went, especially in the third; you could tell they came out with urgency to start the last frame.

Also was not a fan of Mercuri throwing a high elbow right at the horn to end overtime, forget who it was for Maine that he targeted, Breazeale maybe.

Boija really locked down in the third and OT. He was incredible.

Whatever Barr said in the intermission worked because they came out flying and earned both of those points.

Gutsy tie. Another shoot out win. The 10 minutes in the 3rd without a whistle was stress city. 2nd in hockey east is the highest since 2006.

The goals now are get back to Boston, win one there, and win at least one tournament game.

With Penn state beating Michigan, they are up to 12th in pairwise. Hope they move to the 3 seed line. If Maine holds a 1 seed and goes to Allentown, that would be an unfortunate first game vs a hot host team.

The Hockey East Playoffs:

Wednesday
#11 Vermont at #6 UMass
#10 New Hampshire at #7 Lowell
#9 Northeastern at #8 Merrimack

Friday
#5 Providence at #4 UConn

Saturday
Highest remaining seed @ #1 Boston College
Next @ #2 Maine
Next @ #3 Boston University

If form holds, Maine will host Lowell. However, UNH just swept Lowell and if they are able to make it three consecutive wins, that throws a wrench in things. I think the best scenario for Maine is a UNH upset to send the Mildcats to Chestnut Hill and a Merrimack win the bring them to Orono.

The national picture is a mess thanks to Pedo State.

Manchester
Autobid vs #1 Boston College
Denver vs Providence

Allentown
Michigan vs #4 Maine
Pedo State vs Boston U

Toledo
Autobid vs #2 Michigan State
UConn vs Ohio State

Fargo
Quinnipiac vs #3 Minnesota
UMass vs Western Michigan

It was Harrison Scott I think.

Let’s hope Vermont and UNH both pull off an upset. Then UNH can come up for a quick visit.

Against projected ncaa playoff teams(inside top 13 in PWR) Maine is 6-6-4.

Against projected #1 seeds Maine is 0-2-0.

Against projected #2 seeds Maine is 2-2-3.

Against projected #3 seeds Maine is 2-2-1.

Against projected #4 seeds Maine is 2-0-0.

Not what I hoped for but I knew UMass was a tough place to play so take the tie. Shots on goal, that doesn't seem right. Boija robbed UMass similar to the game in Orono. No Doubt Boija was the reason Maine was even in it. Penalty in OT was joke. Somewhere in this thread I said Niemo would make a difference, it took most of the season but he sure has made a difference.

Really hoping whatever Chabrier has going on isn't serious. Clearly we've had to lean on Boija a lot more over the past few weeks and losing one of your top four is only going to exacerbate it. Glad to see Antonacci get on the scoresheet, but the combination of him, Nobes, Arnott, and Lesakowski as a 3rd pairing by committee has been one of the key weak points all season.

Separately, Boija has developed his legend in a very short time. I've been watching for twenty years now and he's inching closer to the best in my lifetime. Unlikely that we get four years out of him but if we did Snow's program victory record (60) and Howard's shutout record (16) will definitely be at risk. As far as my top four goes:
1. Swayman (I think the easiest sell on this is that he has 1000 more career saves as a Black Bear than any other goalie and did it in three years)
2. Howard
3. Michaud
4. Snow

The fifth slot becomes a little more challenging for me but off the top of my head Allison, Bishop, Doyle, and Dunham are probably on the shortlist. At this rate though, Boija is getting closer and closer to this list every weekend. Would love to hear some of the vets' thoughts on this.

Not on this list, but a fun shout out to Dave Wilson, who stepped in for an injured Bishop against UVM late in the 06-07 season and then played very little until Scott Darling's dismissal midway through 09-10 where he helped will the Bears within a goal of a Hockey East championship. Heartbreaking game, but probably one of the very best Maine games these eyes have ever seen.

Yes, Niemo was great last night. He had a nice chance to win the game in OT too. He went across the goal mouth and flipped to backhand and Hrabel made enough of a save for it to deflect away. He could become top six forward with more consistency.
