University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Journey North - Season 3 Episode 3 - https://youtu.be/Qu1VKrTVG0M?feature=shared

Rookie goalies show and explain designs of their painted helmets. Stewart’s has a dream catcher on the back of his helmet and is a member of First Nation. He has interesting half living half dead bear head. He has Latin phrases for embracing fate and living each day like it could be your last.

Berzins has Naked 5 on his helmet and the old school bananas logo. Other side he has some pine trees and on back he has Latvian country and statue for freedom of Latvia.

Maine and UConn tied for the final #1 seed. The Huskies lead by the slimmest of margins. Right now it looks like the Allentown regional would be UConn vs Quinnipiac and Maine vs Michigan.

What a way for BU to lose tonight at Boston College. Rookie goalie making his college debut and goes on the ice too early, gets called for a penalty and BC scores the only goal of the game (except the empty net) on the power play. Brutal.

Apparently Freel didn't have many options in his overage junior year before Maine called. I don't think guys like that will get a look with the new roster caps.

Neither did Boija and Brazeale. Scholle and Komarov were both late recruits similar to Freel.

However, the bar has moved higher because at the same time the rosters will be limited to 26 when most serious teams opt in, the major junior league, which is almost 3 times larger than the USHL and as good or better quality players as USHL, just became available. The result will be better overall skill and talent level across the board.

UConn is a good team but something is telling me they won't be a #1 seed

Yeah, I was just thinking that guys like him (and Boija, Brazeale, Komorov and, maybe, Scott and Holt, who both played in the NAHL) might not be playing div 1 college hockey with no room for walk-ons and the addition of CHL players. The CHL is an early developers league (kids are drafted at 15). Overall the talent pool is definitely deeper, for sure, but with 18 scholarships and no roster cap, late developers still have opportunities. Probably not in the new system.

Sort of. I think the cut line just got raised, and you will still have guys that barely make the roster. Likely those guys would be a little better on average now. But you will see the percentage of NHL players from the NCAA increase now indicating the league got stronger. Additionally over time I bet college hockey expands in the south. Look at ASU for example. They are highly competitive because they are a big school with resources. Wouldn’t shock me to see some traditionally big football schools build D1 hockey programs. Imagine a day when you have UTexas vs. Texas A&M hockey? Seems weird to think about but stuff like that can happen. This UNLV team that beat Denver could probably do it. Other schools like UColorado-Boulder could easily enough it seems. The north west already has a fair amount of major junior hockey and some junior a teams. Maybe UWashington, Oregon, Oregon State, etc… would be a logical choice for expansion in the future. Should be interesting to see where NCAA hockey is in 30 more years. And with expansion the level goes back down and more opportunities open back up.

Need 6 points this weekend. I expect a rested Maine will be ready to go. UMass Flagship has had our number in Orono recently and Northeastern always plays us tough. We need these points with a desperate Providence team looming then a huge series against UHN.

Can severely hurt UHN chances of getting into the tournament and hosting Manchester with a sweep

Have they? We swept them at home to end the season last year, with some significant implications on both the PWR and HEA standings at play.

Goes on the ice too early - I don't understand. Explain, please.

There is a strict protocol that teams have to follow before the game - including only entering the playing area at a certain time for warm-ups and pre-game. They also must make sure the officials are on the ice before they go out (think of the brawl scene in Slap Shot). The kid went on the ice before he was supposed to and before the officials. He was out there for a few laps then went back into the tunnel. I haven't seen anything further, but speculation was that someone opened the door early and he wasn't aware of the rule so he went out. This was a point of emphasis highlighted by Hockey East prior to last season and was noticed by the officials who subsequently called the penalty. I have only seen it called a couple of times. My guess is that he wasn't aware of the rule and went out to calm nerves before his first start. Hard to imagine a worse beginning to his career: called for a penalty before the game even starts and then giving up the only goal of the game on the ensuing power play.

He played outstanding giving up 1 goal to BC. A worst start would be getting lit up in embarrassing fashion. BU just got better if that kid plays like that consistently. He is a 2nd round pick of the NHL draft to your Devils.

Don't quote me on a year, but UMaine did that down at the Whit one year and started the game a man down.

did he start school 2nd semester?

This new interface looks a lot different. Hopefully it won't take too long to get used to.
I noticed the formatted table in the recruiting thread no longer works here. Will have to try to see if there is a different syntax needed to make tables here.
