University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Merry Christmas BB blue bloods. Instead of coal in the stocking how about 6 first rounders on the roster. Or three terriers on a glue stick. Or even better wish for UHN to get something more than a high school coach so they can keep up:)

Holt is back, will play Sunday. Guys came back and started practicing again on the 22nd.

Maine and Bentley are tied in the all time series at 2-2-0.

Portland game is sold out and holds 6,206 fans for hockey. Great fan support there.

Wow, glad that I stopped by here, as I was planning to drive from the western Whites to Portland for the game on Sunday now that the temperatures appear to be warm enough for rain instead of snow or sleet. Was planning to bring my brother who is visiting from Colorado but did not want to buy two tickets in advance if the driving conditions were to be miserable. I am amazed that all 6200 seats have been sold.

I remember the first match up in January 2009 that Bentley won 3-1 at Alfond and I attended Bentley’s 5-1 win during October 2022 in our relatively new arena in Waltham. Bentley also had been 2-2-0 against UNH before losing 2-1 in OT at the Whitt this October. Bentley also lost one-goal games this fall in Waltham against UMass-Flagship (4-5) and UMass-Bazin (5-6, exhibition), along with a 1-3 loss to NU at Matthews. Bentley typically plays better against HEA teams than against teams within Atlantic Hockey. Former Black Bear Sam Duerr is getting a fair bit of ice time on the blue line with the Falcons, but I think that the Black Bears got much more from Bentley in the portal with Harrison Scott.

They have reseller tickets still, but those are well over face value now. I’ve been watching to see if any get released just prior to the game at normal price, but haven’t see it so far. Click the buy tickets button here:

Nick Niemo finally got back in the line up the last series vs. Stonehill. He looked the best he’s looked for Maine in that first game vs. Stonehill. I hope to see him in the line up vs. Bentley. A lot of us here would like to see a 4th line combo of Pichette/Komarov/Niemo, which hasn’t happened yet. My guess is that it may turn out to be the best 4th line Maine can make. I feel like since Califiore has just 1 goal for 1 point in 14 games it is time to let someone else get some ice time to see if they can get more production from a different combo on the 4th line.

So, I have a hunch Niemo could turn into another good get from Bentley if he keeps his effort level up to stay in the line up.

Last year was a battle in Portland… a come from behind win that nearly turned into a tie. So, I think Maine knows not to take Bentley lightly.

Yeah, I miss Nick Niemo as a Falcon also. Fortunately, new coach Andy Jones did not lose any players to the portal last year, which had led to big losses the previous 4-5 off-seasons. Three of Bentley’s top five scorers this season stayed as fifth year/grad students. Junior Connor Hasley (0.910 SV%, 1.93 GAA) is getting most of the minutes in net this season after sharing 50-50 with Nicholas Grabko the past two years. And for the first time in over a decade, Bentley is competing well in Atlantic Hockey. With only one first-year player getting much ice time this season, this year could be Bentley’s best and last chance in the next few years for getting an auto-seed to the NCAAs. Should be a good, low-scoring game on Sunday.

Denver played an exhibition against UNLV. An ACHA team.

It was a 6-6 tie. UNLV won the shootout.

Next weekend should be interesting.

I'd have to think the staff will have Denver ready to play in Alfond but a tie to UNLV at home, thats unreal.

Bentley 1-0

Bentley takes advantage of a turnover where puck goes to a guy alone in front of the net, initially roofs a backhand that goes off crossbar, and then other forward taps into a wide open net. Terrible turnover defensive by Djuresevic as he was attempting to pass into the middle of the ice in his own zone.

Here's a Civic Center themed memory:

My freshman season we were scheduled to play a game against Kent State in Portland. Ticket sales were soft, to say the least. I was in Shawn's office when he was talking to the reporter from the Press Herald. With a wink, Shawn said that if the fans in southern Maine weren't keen on seeing the team then he wouldn't bother playing in Portland anymore. The next day the Herald posted a banner headline that Maine might not schedule future games in Portland.

The game sold out by noon.

StillKIA2, post your name and email address and I'll transfer the tickets (I'd advise you to delete the post as soon as I do)

Tied at 1

Big scrum in front where Bentley goalie made 3 or 4 saves but it ends up being poked in.

Not sure who gets credit.
