University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Wally, you might remember this, I have a vague recollection of Martin Mercier kicking the **** out of Tony Amonte despite giving up, what, 5 inches and 30 pounds? Seem to recall it was close enough to the BU bench that you could both watch the fight and Jack Parker standing there bereft.

I do remember that ,Mercier was from Quebec, wasn't first time he had been in a hockey fight. I don't remember it being Amonte though and the fight was at BU. The Hatred between BU and Maine back then was off the charts. Coaches, Staff, players, fans it was unreal. Car windows getting broken in parking lot, fights in the stands.

Groove, that was Jeff Bunyons dad. Teamed with Steve McBride you had 2 guys who couldnt keep up with play and would call penalties from 200 ft away :) And Yes Rico Rossi was NU and thought of as dirty player.

(Tip opened a Pandora's box here, but in a good way...)

My favorite in-person Maine game was the Harvard Regional in Albany.

On TV, one of the two Natty's, and I really can't say which one made me happier.

Of the games I didn't see through, one was maybe in '79-'80, or maybe the following season...

I never left a single game early when I was there, aside from that one. But that night, BU was in town, and took a 6-2 lead into the 3rd. I was with the usual suspects, and we reluctantly gave up on it, and decided to hit the Bear's Den to slam beers. One of us stayed behind.

Well, FMR if that guy didn't meet us 45 minutes later with a shit-eating grin on his face.

Yup. Maine won it 8-7, IIRC, and I still regret bolting. That was the only period of hockey I ever missed in my 4 years there. Served me right.

I have an extra pair of tickets in section BB for the January 3 (Friday) game against Denver and I've decided to give them away. To enter, just post your favorite memory from the program's history. On the day of the Bentley game I'll assign everyone who enters a random number and have the RNG on Google pick a winner. I'll post the winner here, just reply with your email address and I'll transfer the tickets through the ticket office. (I'd recommend deleting the post with your email afterwards so bots don't pick it up). If you want to share a memory but aren't interested in the tickets, just specify that in your post. Good luck!

For me its a weekend: 2004 Hockey East tournament in Boston. My dad told me that Thursday night he was gonna let me skip school on Friday so we could head down to the games.

The 1-0 shutout of BU in the semis was sweet and then the 2-1 triple OT game versus UMass, which is still probably the best game I've seen in person (thanks Ben Murphy).

I've never seen a Maine goalie more locked in than Howard was that weekend.

Not sure if anyone else got a call from the ticket office, but the start times for the Denver series have been adjusted.

Friday is now 6PM and Saturday is 6:30PM.

Sister and little brother of a BU player after the Friday loss had a sign with Maines record , the 0 in loss column crossed out and a 1 put in its place. Standing over tunnel into BUs locker room waving that sign. At that point the Band was right there, some guy came out of that section in 2nd period and ripped the sign up, little brother was shocked that someone would do that. Everyone around was clapping.

A well known Bangor Attorney going toe to toe with a BU fan in the Garden, HE finals, both got kicked out. Maine ended up losing late, 92 I think? Was that Prendergast with the late goal? He killed Maine .

No tickets I wouldn't sit in the seats anyway :)

If it was the Hockey East Finals that Maine lost to BU, it was 1991 when the Terriers won in OT. In 1990 Maine beat BU in the semis and lost to BC in the finals; in 1992 we beat BC and then UNH in the final and 1993 we beat Lowell and BU. We didn't play BU at the Garden again until the 2000 tournament.

The fight was Mercier vs Pomichter on the Saturday night at Boston University in November 92. Both players were suspended from the February rematch in Orono, but Maine and BU appealed so Hockey East backed down. Pomichter got three assists that night, including on the overtime goal that represents the "1" in 42-1-2. Jimmy and I got into it several years ago on Twitter when I said without that loss we might not have won the title. He... disagreed. But he took that loss hard. After the game he told everyone to look in the mirror and decide if they still wanted to be a hockey player. Ouch. The focus from then on was intense, especially against BU and in the national tournament. I remember the atmosphere being loose on the Friday in Boston when we played Lowell. On the way to the game we took it as an omen that the marquee at the Museum of Science advertised the bear exhibit. The next night when we played BU was completely different. On the ride from the hotel to the Garden, Shawn played a video of the seven BU goals from February 19, as well as the Terriers celebrating afterwards at the Alfond. Not a word was spoken until long after we had entered the locker room.

The Maine-BU rivalry in those days was very real, and everyone did feel it. Going back to my days at NYA I had always made it a point to find the opposing coach before the game and wish him luck. My introduction to the rivalry was when I found Jack Parker before the game, said good luck and held out my hand. He just looked down, shook his head and laughed as he walked away. The marketing departments in Orono and Durham may try to build up the Border War, but that rivalry will always pale in comparison to the bitter contempt felt on both sides of Maine-BU.

It seems no one wants these tickets...

yeah, I ‘m old enough go see a UNH game as just another game. I do not understand the “rivalry”, at all.

and “noone”? Jeez, I wrote a couple memories hoping to maybe take an old Black Bear 4th string goalie…he’ll be in town then

Unless I missed anyone, right now it's you, groove and Fish. Unless Tylerz needs tickets because his press pass expired :p

I do have season tix but who knows might be fun to watch a game this season from the other end of the rink.

Still have all my old press creds hanging up in my office tho. Those were fun days!

I have season tickets too don't waste them on me but my co worker would definitely go with his son. Crazy how we all have memories of different things.

On the rivalry thing: I would say UNH is more of a rivalry now. The BU thing has kind of died off from what it was. But who knows maybe we will see the Scarlet's of Satan in Boston again.

I'll keep you in the mix and you can give them to your friend if you win :)

I have so many friends who are fans and alumni of UNH that the rivalry will never come close to what we had with BU, but I would say even that rivalry has thawed with Jack no longer there and Shawn's & Red's passing.

Put the RIP on hold for WKIT, Jeff Solarie and another dude are buying it. Ex sports talk show guy turned restaurant owner and a pot shop owner.

Going to be interesting to see how they make KIT stay in the black? I suppose when you have 4 or 5 cannabis stores you need a place to dump cash as you can't put ill gotten gain in the bank.

There will be a lot of Tom Petty from now on.

Works for me. Dont listen to it so much anymore but it would have been weird with nothing on 100.3
