University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Facebook page says Breen has surgery on Friday, not sure why the wait unless Dr wasn't available? Seems if it was just a broken leg(just probably isn't right word) they would have set it right off. So probably more going on?

I made a table of the recruits that appear to be coming in next year. I left out Peter Cisar since it appears he pulled his commitment. I also left out Zac Sommers since he declined to move to more competitive league since first verbal commitment. Likely won’t make the cut that way.

Let me know if you see errors or disagree with my assessment.

Brock James would make a lot of sense to come in early.

Wonder if James Taylor would also be in play as well. Might not be a bad idea to get him here early to learn from a couple other players we have with size (Makar/Renwick).

One small note about commitments I noticed while looking at my sheet: Nicholas Wellenreiter is now playing for North Bay of the OHL, so he'll be the third commit to move over to the CHL.

I think that is good for Wellenreiter because his hometown is in the middle of the bulk of the OHL teams. So it makes it easier for his family and friends to watch him play at away games. Even North Bay is only 3.5 hour drive from his hometown. For family they would make that trip even for some home weekend series in North Bay. I will have to see if there is a way to stream those games for free.

I'd be surprised if all 7 of those players are in Orono next year. As Jim Connolly said in the most recent USCHO TMQ, tier 2 junior coaches are telling their players to temper their expectations and start thinking about division 3 because of the CHL ruling. Maine hasn't committed any CHL players yet, but I would be surprised if they weren't talking. And its not just 20 year olds aging out of junior, it's players playing college hockey in Canada who graduated from CHL teams. A lot of 04 and 05 players will have to rethink their plans.

I use onhockey(.)tv whenever I wanna stream CHL games. Pretty reliable if you have a good Adblocker.

Northern lights is something like $700mil in debt, but you cant get in to see anyone, go figure.
Maybe the injury didnt rise to the level of urgent surgery?
A week isnt too bad these days for around here.
Today is wed, media day, due to student athlete privacy I suppose Barr wont say much.
Larry quoted the official response as "Breen will be sidelined for an “undetermined period of time,” according to UMaine sports information specialist Katie Peverada."

Getting in for major, but non-emergency surgery in less than a week is pretty quick. Also, if there's ligament damage they need to let the swelling go down before they can even get an MRI which takes a few days. Maybe an NHL player gets in a day or two quicker but it's not like they're waiting weeks.

I think some of the 07's committed to Maine could come in next year. Poul Andersen is scoring 1ppg in the BCHL as a 17 year old and has made the central scouting list. He's listed at 6'1 181 so if he keeps it up I wouldn't be shocked to see him come as a true freshman.

Malachi McKinnon(07) is at 1 ppg on that same BCHL team. They are buddies evidently since they played together on the same LI Gulls U16AAA national champion team. They visited Maine the same weekend last fall.

Michael Munroe is another 07 doing well considering he is playing USHL hockey right now. Very promising recruits specifically in the 07 and 08 years!

Frank Djuresevic is the Hockey East Defender of the Month.

Albin Boija got runner up for the Hockey East Goaltender of the Month.

Is there anywhere else y'all talk about the team? The spam problem here just keeps getting worse. We were page 5 this morning with maybe 5 team threads in front of us.

Yeah I forgot it's northern lights they have to deal with. Hopefully Downeast Orthopeadics is supplying the doctor.

It would be great if the /r/CollegeHockey Discord had team specific threads because things get kinda lost in the general discussion chat over there.

There is always the Facebook group as well

Dang, I dont even know what to say, so unfortunate, he's a great guy, wife and I had a chance to say hi to him last year. Can only imagine how hard this must be for him. Wonder if the ice was soft and grooved up caught his skate at the wrong time.

I don't think it was the ice. It was so cold in the lower bowl at Houston that we went outside to warm up during the intermissions.

If it isn't displaced, they likely wouldn't even have to cast it, let alone schedule him for open surgery. That was the protocol when I sustained a fairly severe spiral fracture years ago.

I'm not an orthopedic surgeon by any means, but this doesn't sound good. If the fracture is adjacent to either the knee or the ankle, it greatly complicates recovery.

(Especially if it's adjacent to the ankle, a very complicated joint. Some people have problems for years -as you've said that your missus does- or even for life. I've seen that a bunch of times.)

Sorry to see King's 3 radio stations shuttering at the end of the month. And it still baffles me how poorly the U treated him.

Its awful if you live here IMHO. I love Spotify but listen to WKIT every time I'm in a vehicle. I've listened to most of the DJs on WKIT for many years. You feel like you know them after so many years. They had Jim Witt and Mike Geary doing weather for free. Best forecasts around without all the hype of the TV guys looking for hits on a website. Radio is way more personal than Spotify. Its a changing world and I doubt its for the better.

When Dan Hannigan was at WZON doing afternoon primetime and play by play for Maine hockey, you couldn't ask for better local sports radio. He composed silly lyrics to old tunes for every team in Hockey East, they were clever as all get out. I doubt any team anywhere had a better play by play guy.
