University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Army could be down way more second period is all Maine. Makar-Renwick-Mitton continues to be the best line but the top line is slowly getting there

Makar scored after wheeling around the net, got a wrister blocked, then regained possession and sniped one through a screen.

Not long after that Army had a bad turnover that ended up on Scholle’s tape streaking down the slot and he beats the goalie blocker side.

Maine killed off a 5-on-3 and shortly after Califore scores on a rebound(from a Dalton point shot??) and batted it through goalies 5-hole.

Maine 4-0

Maine wins 5-0

Maine held Army to 8 shots on goal.

It doesn’t count, but it was good for practice. Nice to see the 4th line get a couple goals today.

Got to see Berzins get some minutes. He didn’t face enough shots to see him tested.

Two games vs inferior competition but this team looks great. The transfers and new comers addressed every need this team had and the returners look sharp.

I’ve been really impressed with Barr’s use of the portal in his time here. Maine is not an NIL destination but they’ve found some real diamonds. In this new age of college hockey, finding plug and play guys who fit with the culture is just as important as a strong recruiting pipeline.

If you look at score you'd think Army Goalie sucked but he had little help and Maine puck possession was off the charts. Still like to see Breen and Josh connect on a goal or two. Good practice but Army is not really a D1 team. Hope they liked coming to Orono. Maybe they get Pats before they leave town :)

Going to be a great weekend of Hockey with it being Homecoming weekend. Maine is going to get a test against Quinnipiac. I find Quinnipac's weakness this year to be their goaltending. Still a great team and a big test even at the Alfond. Tickets look to be pretty much gone.

Fun fact: Army is 0-1 (not the exhibition loss) and has a higher pairwise/RPI then Maine.
Another fun fact: Army was asked to come to Orono to play knowing it was Brian Riley's last year. Riley and Barr have been friends for a long time.

Should be a great weekend and the Alfond will be jumping.

Quinnipiac has become a truly great program built brick by brick by Pecknold much like once upon a time at Maine with Walsh. It’s been nice to see a mutually beneficial scheduling arrangement with them over the last 10-15 years. I’d love for them to join hockey east but the talks of that seem to cooled over the years.

I believe this team looks much different for Q this year with a lot of guys turning pro and graduating over the past 2 seasons. Goaltending had been a really strong area for them over the past seasons with Perets and Duplessis so I’m sure they’re trying to find that next guy. Jacked for this weekend, Friday can’t come soon enough.

It will be nice to see meaningful/competitive games. I’m pretty confident Maine will be able to score some goals but it will be interesting to see how Maine’s D holds up given they weren’t tested much by AIC or Army. I think both teams would be reasonably satisfied with a split(I doubt either would admit it publicly) but getting swept would be a disaster.
