University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

This a nice piece on Ross Mitton, Black History Month, and his efforts to work to encourage kids to play hockey.

North Dakota announced today that they will not be opting into the new rules that will limit rosters at 26. With the way Barr spoke about it on a recent CHN podcast, I'd be surprised if Maine opted in.

Interesting. Im not sure I see the full advantage for all programs.
If you can still get quality players without the scholarship, or if theres work arounds like giving academic scholarships.

Yeah, I can't figure out all the angles, either.

But I'd have to guess that opting out might save a school a buck or two, or that opting in with a bunch of promising recruits
coming next year would make more sense in the short term..?

Somebody give an old man a little help here.

I doubt the school would try to penny pinch when the only moneymaking program on campus is successful again. Two weeks ago on the CHN Insider podcast Barr was talking about how the 26 player limit was an issue and they wouldn't have had a full team on the ice a few times this year. It seems like there's a lot of confusion on what opting in actually means on the University/his end. The court case is due to be settled in April, so hopefully there will be more clarity then.

Regarding the House settlement and opting in, based on the statement put out by the North Dakota AD (who is opting out) it sounds like that it might be a yearly decision that schools can make and change year-over-year? Because he said that maybe next year they might change course if the situation changes or becomes more clear. Perhaps Maine could do the same; opt out for now and if conditions become more favorable opt in at a later point? Will be interesting to see, regardless.

In other news, finally getting to make it to Toscano tonight for the game, really excited to see the new place and to have 11/11 HEA arenas checked off my list. A big game as well, they better be prepared for a battle.

If you opt in you can share up to $21M in athletic revenues with your athletes. It doesn't change NIL coming from outside the department. And, if you don't HAVE $21M in revenues, you can still opt in and share whatever you want. The downside with opting in is the roster limit, as Barr said.

North Dakota may be looking at their NIL operations vs. their revenues and figuring that the outside NIL will more than makeup for what the actual department can share. So why opt in and limit your rosters?

Maine may have a different calculation. I don't get the sense that there's any kind of NIL behemoth set up. If we can endow some of that Alfond money within the athletic department and produce $2-3M in revenues within the department per year to give directly to players, we may be better off opting in.

My sense that Maine is opting in comes from how the teams are talking about roster limits. Not just Barr on the podcast, but the baseball team releasing a ton of recruits from their commitments and all of those recruits saying things like "Due to new NCAA regulations I am no longer committed to UMaine and am reopening my commitment." The only regulation there would be a roster limit, and that only applies if Maine is opting in.

I might be totally off on this but I feel like some of the Alfond Foundation money might be set aside for this type of stuff. I would not be suprised to see Maine set aside $20-$30 million for stuff like revenue sharing, coaches salaries and facilities operations. Also remember that Maine received $16 million last fall from the Labat estate.....

"According to the terms of their gift, the funds will be specifically and solely used for the benefit of the university's Department of Athletics. Purposes include enhancing student support and success, coach and staff recruitment and retention, capital expenditures, and departmental support. This will include the new facilities mostly funded by the Harold Alfond Foundation. The university's athletics director will determine the specific allocation of funds."

Is Breen ready to go yet? Be nice to see him on the ice soon, give his line a little more speed and creativity. Boooyahh is gonna have to be lights out tonight.
I've heard he might play but makes more sense next weekend at home. You do get the extra skater so maybe

Sounds like Breen is back in the lineup tonight. Wonder if he'll play any substantial minutes or just be a PP merchant as the extra forward.

Edit: Listed as the 4th line center between Carney and Niemo. Lesakowski is the extra skater.

Here at Toscano. This place is absolutely beautiful. Sightlines pretty good too. I also spotted Ross Mitton on the concourse during my lap around; he was in street clothes and looked like he was moving ok. Hopefully he isn't out long.

Wonder if Cav and staff will whine to the refs all night like they did up here.

Good grief.
