Non hockey announcement. Congratulations to Coach Joe Dumais and his wife Theresa on the birth yesterday of their first child, Colin Joseph, class of 2033.;)

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

I interviewed @Nate_Owen41, an ECAC hockey correspondent here at USCHO.com. He makes his picks for the upcoming weekend, analyzes Union's play so far this year, and discusses how the ECAC might unfold the rest of the way.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

After all the humble pie of the last few weeks the Dutchmen are suffering from some painful indigestion. It does not get any easier this weekend. Expectations for this team are suddenly being tempered. Four points would resurrect the pre-season enthusiasm.

The team travels to Brown to play the Bears (0-3-2, 3-5-2) tomorrow night at 7. To get the inside scoop on Brown's hockey team, I chatted with Mark Divver, who covers them for The Providence Journal. He fills us in on what kind of team they have, which players to watch out for, and how he expects the game to go.

Union 3, Brown 3. Union was lucky to even come away with that tie. I'll add more later, but that was ugly.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

I was at the womens game (also a tie, 1-1) but tying Brown is kind of troubling... especially with a 3-1 lead after one and after the past couple weekends.

Get the lowdown on tomorrow's opponent, Yale, from Chip Malafronte. He covers Yale and much more the New Haven Register.

Can't make it to Ingalls Rink for Union at Yale Saturday night at 7? Watch it LIVE for FREE and later on-demand.... go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JCbzfk09Sg

That interview must have been before Yale played RPI. :)

BTW, if the same broadcasting crew is there as against RPI, their play-by-play announcer is well worth watching -- not listening to perhaps, but watching. :D

I don't know if the team was overlooking their first opponent and going straight to Union, but at least this writer was.

Not much has changed with them in the last couple of years, Dutch dudes. Up tempo play, horrible goaltending.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

That was another disappointing effort last night. The team seems to be playing as if in a collective funk. The hard work and physicality that was a trademark of recent year's teams is lacking. All in all a puzzling first half of the season so far. Still plenty of time to get on track but each point left on the table in this league is critical. Big test tonight against a dangerous opponent. I'm worried.

Union is fast becoming damp charcoal that will not light. Hard to make sense of a lineup that, save for two major departures, is the same one that went to the FF last year.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Well, to use the popular radio phrase, the boys could not "seal the deal" this weekend. Overall disappointing to give up points like that, but I thought the team mostly looked good last night against Yale. They really controlled play for all but about 15 minutes in the 3rd period and the special teams were excellent. I would call it a very good road game, just didn't convert enough of their chances and were a little loose at times giving the Eli room to skate - but really that is going to happen at some point against a good team in their own barn. The penalties are becoming a bit worrisome, but have to say that was a very strangely called game. Phantom penalties on both team, an icing on Yale when the had a man down compounded by giving Yale a faceoff in Union's end.. it disrupted the flow of the game IMO. As for the Brown game, that is one more point than U got against the Bears all of last season, so again can't complain too much. There is still a lot to be concerned with and the tight lockdown physical play isn't consistently there yet, but I think things are building in the right direction. May sound stupid, but I think getting Ikkala back will help with some of that.

I agree 100 % with your analysis of the weekend. Can we do something about Ciampini's elbows? 2 elbowing calls last night and one a couple of weeks ago. Maybe some sort of elbow chastity belt? :D. Can't fault former Union player Scott Wheeler for trying to invent a new rule against icing on the PK. ;).

Ikkala being out is in my view a very big deal. He has really elevated his game this year and his physicality and energized play is missed, kind of like an Andrew Buote. Going into the weekend I was hoping for at least two points, but if that's what we got I would have predicted 2 pts v. Brown and maybe a loss to Yale.

I am going to work on my mid term grades of the team, but one thing that seems clear is that this is no longer a 4 line threat team like it was last season. Having two scoring lines is ok, a lot of opponents only have one, but hopefully we can change that going forward. Fourth line scoring is a bonus, but our third line performance has been way off.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

. . . I think getting Ikkala back will help with some of that.

For those seasoned fans, remember Glen Sanders' loss from the fourth line and subsequent return? Things improved immensely after that for the team.:)

Kinkaid (Albany-AHL) got his second shutout of the year yesterday. Zajac, currently with Trenton of the ECHL, scored his first two pro goals on Saturday.
