Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Alright, enough angst from me, now that I've had a bit of a chance to calm down.

Have there been any further developments regarding Union's schedule?

Dumais is an interesting choice of a lead assistant coach! It's not like UConn has been knocking out anyone's lights lately in the Atlantic Hockey League.

I had a similar initial reaction, but.. could have said the same thing when Bennett when was hired too. I don't really think you can read too much into an assistant coach's previous experience. And UConn is a hopeless situation as long the administration ignores the hockey program.

Overall I like both of these hires. Both of the new coaches are young and should bring energy to their jobs - which lets face it, is what is needed when you coach at Union. Tapp obviously is a known quantity as far as the returning players are concerned, and I think its a definite plus having a full time goalie coach on a team that will be breaking in young goalies. Dumais seems like the typical overachiever type who made the most of his abilities as a player and could turn out to be an excellent coach down the road.. and let's not forget that YOU KNOW WHO played D-3 hockey before getting into coaching.

both good recruiters with good results in a tough league and school to get kids to play at

Union will be a much easier sell

I agree. I like Dumais. He's a bright young talent behind the bench and recruits well.

Whether or not a coach is young has no bearing on the amount of energy they bring to their job. I know older coaches who are very energetic and passionate about their jobs. Conversely, I know some young coaches who are very methodical in their approach to their jobs. Being an assistant coach isn't about age, it's about recruiting, recruiting, recruiting, which means a vast network of contacts and bird dogs, which comes with age and experience. They should also be a student of the game, highly organized, and possess excellent communication skills. I'm not knocking Tapp or Dumais, as I also think they will be fine with the challenges that lay ahead.

I trust in Rick Bennett's choices for his assistants especially since there was a huge amount of interest shown in the positions, in itself, a positive. I don't know much about the actual methodology of recruiting but I have to believe its a grueling process with tremendous travel to many distant areas of the U.S. and of course Canada, particularly for Union lately, to western Canada. With the difficulties of air travel these days, I don't envy them, particularly during the winter.

I understand, but to go from Berard to Dumais???????

I am UCONN alum and have heard good things about Dumais. He brought in Cole Schneider to UCONN who was an all-rookie AC choice this year. Bennett made a good choice on this one.

BTW - Hey Union fans can you get the kid with the flashlight..I mean spotlight a bigger flashlight so it looks a little better for your home games. Whollin can u work on that. Also, to my friend Ken Schott can you give me a call so I can watch a Phillies game with you this summer. I see where your Flyers sh** the bed, hint, they need a Goalie.

Sorry AD, I'm concentrating on getting another towel dispenser for the men's room. Spotlight could be a budget buster. ;)

W1 I owe you a beer after the game at HFH next season. We'll go to the RR Penalty Box because I 'm afraid of getting the blanket party treatment in Sch'dy.
