Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

LOL.. well things must be back to normal now that this thread has become it's typical RPI offshoot again .

Hence why I was bringing up a topic where we could talk Union Hockey. ;)

Kinkaid I think earned the #1 job quite early (around November or so). I'm sure that, given the question marks around goaltending, your NC schedule in October will see goalie trade-offs, and then Coach Bennett will make his decision by the time we start conference play. Obviously from a standpoint of getting to the tournament, you'd want that decision to be made quickly so you can get some NC wins, or you want both goalies to be so good that you get the NC wins AND Coach Bennett has that tough decision.

Wrong thread, Aspydad.

Oops. I was in looking for my Hdud. Sorry folks. To all my adoring Union fans I wish a lovely and safe summer until we kick your bu*** in the fall.

DU schedule has Union coming to Denver for a single game on Dec. 30th. I assume they will also play either CC or AFA while they are out west.

The other game will be with CC. Not sure of the date. From what I have heard Union will be playing 12 or 13 teams that appeared in this year's NCAA's including Michigan and Merrimack.

The link below is from the Providence Journal on Nate Leaman's introductory news conference yesterday. I was somewhat disappointed to read that he took a bit of a slap at Union by saying “At Union we didn’t have an overly impressive sell..".

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

I think he was talking about the things a young hockey player could see. Clearly coach leaman saw the value and the greatness of the school

Zero scholarships
Tough place to get even financial aid at
Bad team
No history, hockey wise
Not a big school or name
He was also an unknown

It is quite clear he loves the school and eevrything about it

He left Union in a great position and there is no doubt Rick B will keep the tradition and plan moving forward. Real good pipeline and team in place.

Some coaches leave when it is a train wreck, he walks away with a great program that any kid would love to join

I get what he was saying. I am sure disrespect was the last thing on his mind. Which he made very clear at his parting press conference

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

It wasn't necessarily meant as a slap in the face but it certainly felt that way, at least to me. As someone who attended Union and loved it I feel like the school has a lot to offer anyone, hockey player or not. Union is generous with financial aid, offers a solid foundation for future success and a lot of support and guidance. Nate Leaman trivialized Union with his comment and left a bad taste in my mouth.

Any details (dates, location (Ann Arbor or Tournament) 1 or 2 games) for the Michigan game(s)?

Regarding CC: I would say either the 29th or the 31st of December (more likely the 31st), given you guys are already out there at that time playing Denver.

Regarding Michigan: It'd likely be in Ann Arbor for a 2-game set (the GLI is the only RS tournament Michigan is usually in and that's already set), but I don't have a potential date, given that none of Michigan's league schedule (with the exception of UA_) is filled in. Best of luck in trying to become the 4th current team to produce an all-time winning record against them; we'd appreciate the company. :)

I would expect a Tuesday game with Harvard for you this season. One of your games was scheduled for the Saturday before one of the Beanpot games.

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Michigan will be over Thanksgiving weekend for 1 game at Ann Arbor. Also the Denver and CC dates will be the 30th and 31st. I think the date posted by DU 78 above may have been erroneous and flip flops with the CC date.

This is exactly how I felt. I think both Nate and for that matter Driscoll, have been somewhat dismissive or derogatory about Union in many of their comments, particularly Driscoll. When you walk out the door, I don't think it's necessary to slam it behind you.

Than you took it wrong

He was talkling strictly hockey. I heard it live and tahts not how he meant it and thats not how it came accross.

Anyone that knows Union college knows it is a great school that is as good as it gets. thanks to Nate Leaman and Rick Bennett, it now has the same experience on the hockey side.

Union is a far superior situation because of him.

I do beg to differ on the financial aid side. They are virtually need based, which is the way it should be. Other schools tend to be more flexible to the hockey players.

Maybe Driscoll, even though I have not seen it but not Leaman. He has gone out of his way to praise the school, the team and community. over and over again

What possible benefit could it have for him.....

To the contrary, Union's AD's comments could have been perceived as a backhanded compliment

“We found out about Nate’s departure about 10 a.m. and at 10:30, Rick and I had signed a deal,” McLaughlin said. “This is essentially a new beginning for us. During my career, this was the easiest decision that I’ve had to make.”
Terms of the four-year deal were not announced.

According to the DU home schedule which was posted yesterday on their website, the DU/Union game is 12/30 which is what I posted.

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Leaman's comment was certainly not the best choice of words, but lets face it, he left Union because he thinks Providence is a better situation and that means he sees some negatives at Union, which as HoDad points out aren't too hard to identify. And there is no doubt that when he first came to Union recruiting was a very tough sell.. and in fact his first recruiting class wasn't that good.

Personally I'm trying not to dwell too much on what is happening over in Rhode Island. Leaman isn't Union's coach anymore and I'm more than satisfied that U has a very good coach that is thrilled to be here. I'm grateful for what Leaman did at Union and believe he deserves huge credit, but now he coaches the enemy and I hope Union kicks Friar butt if they ever play them..

I do wonder if Union's administration is taking note of why Leaman left and won't be complacent with where the program is now as being "good enough". One big area that I think should be considered for improvement is.. drum roll please.. the famous Itsa Messa! The momentum of the program has never been higher and I hope there will be some movement on this front. I know that building a new rink may be too big a bite, but there needs to be some plans for a major rehab or expansion of some kind.
