Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

RIT is also a return game from last year. This really looks like a killer OOC schedule but I'd rather see tougher than weaker opponents so it's all good for me. I hope this toughens us a bit for the postseason where every game is a big challenge and where Union has frankly stumbled for the most part.

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

You'll probably get a return from UNH. We did, the year Jerry and Brandon were with us.
That's a nice thought, but it hasn't happened in the past when Union played UNH. RPI has more historical cred & reputation and I'd guess that's why they get teams like BU and UNH to come to Houston. Maybe IF Union stays relevant nationally next season, the Wildcats will deem Schenectady worthy of a visit.

Well, Niagara is a return for their visit this past season.
And, Army is a continuation of the 6-season (so far) long series alternating home-and-homes.
My guess is that Merrimack is just the start of a home-and-home series. They are definitely a team on the up-and-up and it's always good to get a team on your schedule before they really hit it big.
I understand the reciprocal thing with Niagara & RIT, and not to be snooty about it, but when you're looking at only 3 home OOC games Union should be able to tell any AH team that they either can't schedule them this year or they have to come to Messa. I'm pretty sure that certain teams from the CCHA, W & HE have done that to Union over the years. And I'm sure Mack will do a reciprocal, but why not come to Schenectady this season? Have to believe there was open date SOMEWHERE that would have worked.

In the end, it looks like whoever does the scheduling decided that the games in Colorado, Michigan & UNH were too good an opportunity to pass up and decided to honor all their reciprocals from last season - with the possible exception of UConn who has finally disappeared. In the long run this may be a good move, assuming U stays a national contender. It makes for a tough schedule next season, but the team should be good and I see mostly positives from playing the top programs in the country. And with a possible shake up in the conferences with the Big 10 coming on board, keeping good relations with in state schools like RIT & Niagara could be important.

I just noticed that there are 8 straight road games from mid-November through year end though one is a neutral at Lake Placid.

One would think that RPI and Union could coordinate trips to the Boston area, so that each plays one school on Friday, and they reverse on Saturday. The following (or previous) year the two Boston Area teams would reverse the process in the Capital District. It does require four schools to coordinate everything.

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Hello friends of ECAC hockey,

My name is Kevin McNamara, and I will be a senior on Colgate's hockey team this year. I've had an idea for a charitable project for the past few years, and I wanted to make sure I implemented it before I finished playing for Colgate and in our league. I’ve spoken with Commissioner Hagwell, and this season the teams of the ECAC are going to join together in a project called Goals for Good.
It will be a campaign relying on the competitiveness of the teams, fans, and alumni bases of the teams in the ECAC. "Goals for Good" will be based out of a website, and on the front page, there will be a standings table, much like the one on the ECAC site, except it will rank teams by money raised. Each team will pair up with a charity or cause close to their university or community.
The front page on the website will have a link to each team/partner charity page which will explain the relation. There will also be a donate button on that page. There will be different options for donations. A donor could donate by the amount of goals that a team will score over the duration of the season (example: John Smith will donate $1 for every goal that Colgate University scores this season), a donor could donate by the amount of goals that a team will score over the course of a weekend series (example: John Smith will donate $1 for every goal that Colgate University will score this weekend against Harvard University and Dartmouth College), or a donor could donate a one-time amount (example: John Smith will donate $5 to Colgate University and Charity XYZ).
As of now, we are working on finishing the website. I am also trying to spread the word of the initiative as much as possible to build a fan base for the start of the season and the launch of the website. Goals for Good is trying to build its fan base through a Facebook Fan Page. You can find the Fan Page at www.facebook.com/goals4good. It would great if you could “Like” the initiative and spread the word. I am also new to this process, so all comments and suggestions are appreciated. Sorry for breaking your thread, and thank you very much for your time and support.

Kevin McNamara

UCONN has released their schedule, and have included you on their list. I realize you have already released your schedule of 34 non-exempt games, none of which include UCONN. They have it for November 17th, which would mean 4 games in the course of a week (seems a little unlikely to me, but nonetheless that is what they posted). Have any of you heard anything on the Union end regarding this schedule discrepancy?

In the words of the immortal Bruce Springsteen, "Is there anyone alive out there?" Whatever...anyway, Josh Jooris has been invited to the Boston Bruins development camp this summer.

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Jeremy Welsh and Mat Bodie will be attending Chicago Blackhawks prospect camp.

My guess is that someone at UConn misspelled PROVIDENCE :p.. not sure what Leaman's connection was/is with the Huskies, but they were a consistent presence during his tenure.

Nice to see some of the boys getting the experience of a pro camp, can only help their development. Of course, I also hope the pro teams don't get TOO interested in them.. particularly Welsh, who I won't feel comfortable until I see him back on the ice for the first game of the season.

Also noticed that Heisenberg's list has changed Gostisbehere from a possible '12 recruit to more definitely matriculating this fall. This would make 2 d-men coming in to replace only one graduating senior, so have to wonder if this means that Ingoldsby may not be returning from his concussions. That would be a really tough break as I thought Mike had a very bright future.. of course this all rather wild speculation, so hopefully I'm wrong.

In another round of the coaching merry-go-round, ex-Proviced assistant David Berard has ended up at.. UConn! Considering the rumor that Berard turned down coming to Union, that seems a little.. ironic.

Update on this one: UCONN fixed their schedule. Yours is still correct.

Meh to a SJHL forward recruit. Anyone have anymore info on this guy?
Well here's a "highlight" video of Mr. Johnston in action..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tthm8oNa5QI

Looks like he has a good stick.. but he sure misses the net a lot when he shoots.

Johnston was on the NHL watch list in 2009, made the SJHL all-star team the last two seasons, and was invited to tryout for the Canada West team in the World Jr. A Challenge last year (though he was not selected). There is also a rumor that he may end up in the USHL next season. He has good size at 6-1 185 but he is a '91 birthday, so will be a 21 year old when he matriculates. I'd agree that there are some questions coming out of one of the weaker Jr. A leagues in Canada, but looks like he could be a solid recruit.

Thanks for the info, hopefully he can get on the ice more than our last recruit from Flin Flon.

Also, look for Kelly Zajac to be a NJD prospect camp, along with Kinkaid. Starts tomorrow.

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Who would that have been?
I think he means Bergeron.. which probably isn't a totally fair comparison, as he was pretty much brought in as back end depth on the blueline and I suspect knew from the beginning that he would have little chance of ever playing in a game.

Kelly Zajac scored twice in today's scrimmage at Devils camp. I also found this photo of Kinkaid on the Hockey's Future boards.
