Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Is it just me, or has anyone else lost the "Settings" link from the USCHO?

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Union picked up a commitment from Albany Academy's Jeff Taylor for 2013 or 2014. Taylor was a junior this season for Academy and led the team in scoring for defensemen.

Interesting coaching staff at Academy. HC is Mark Cavosie and his assistant is Joel Beal. So did Joel/Union win out on this recruit or was RPI not interested? ;). So far as I know Beal is still being mentioned as a volunteer assistant for Union.

The son of RPI's AD is on the team at AA (& is a pretty good player), so between him and Cavosie I'm sure Appert is in the know on what is going on there. Academy had a very strong team this past season and I know was being watched by both Union & RPI.

Taylor had 35 points in 36 games in NE Preps, which is very good for a D-man. According to USHR & Mr. Schott, he will finish his senior year next season at Academy and then do a year in juniors before coming to U. Jeff is listed at 5-11 170# which is not real big, but he does have a couple years to develop. This looks like a good get and will be part of an important recruiting class that will have to replace 4 graduating D-men in '13. Always nice to see local kids (Clifton Park) looking at the U rather than thinking they have to go somewhere else if they are pretty good.

Also of more minor recruiting note, Kelly Zajac's little brother Nolan committed to Denver. He just finished a very good season in the USHL and was a highly touted prospect that I hoped maybe maybe maybe would consider U, but no such luck. Of course the offseason coaching movement may not have helped in that respect.. not that you can blame anybody for going to U Denver.

Eric, not Marc.

A bit surprising that it took until 4th son before one went to their father's alma mater.

Oops. Thanks for your vigilance Ralph. It was confirmed at the Garnet Blades golf outing today that Joel Beal will indeed be coming on board as a volunteer assistant next season. Incidentally his foursome won the scramble with a 57! 14 under par. All former Union hockey players.

I agree with ADK that it would be nice to see more local kids in Schenectady or even Troy.

That is great news that Joel is rejoining the Union program. He's always been one of my favorite players to have worn the garnet and white.

The non-conference game with RPI on December 10th will be in Lake Placid. The game at HFH will be November 15th.

The schedule is now up..

It pretty much confirms all the rumors - 2 with WMU and singletons with Michigan, UNH, Denver, CC, Merrimack, RIT & RPI @ LP. This has to be the toughest OOC schedule U has ever had. Overall, I think this is excellent but I really don't understand why there are only 3 home non-conf games. I know that U isn't going to get UNH, Denver, Michigan, etc. to come to Schenectady, but IMO there really is no reason to be traveling to Niagara, Army, or Merrimack. This is the kind of schedule that will either make or break a team..

Well, Niagara is a return for their visit this past season.

And, Army is a continuation of the 6-season (so far) long series alternating home-and-homes.

My guess is that Merrimack is just the start of a home-and-home series. They are definitely a team on the up-and-up and it's always good to get a team on your schedule before they really hit it big.

You'll probably get a return from UNH. We did, the year Jerry and Brandon were with us.

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Any schedule where there's fewer home games (18 vs 14, I think) than the previous year is a bad one in my book.
