Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Well, battle won, war continues. RPI gave Union all they could handle. I think they generally outhit Union throughout the series and never, never quit. They simply lack finishing skill and remind me of several Union teams that struggled as they tried to turn the corner a few years back. I actually think this series is just what Union needed going into the semis at AC. A cakewalk would have been counterproductive as these games were classic playoff hockey. In particular it gave the freshmen a taste of what playoff hockey is all about and what is necessary to be successful. It was encouraging to see contributions coming from different sources, specifically Kevin Sullivan in this instance. Those are the kinds of contributions we will need going down the stretch.

Congratulations to Jeremy Welsh on breaking the single season team goal scoring record. Let's hope it is an incomplete record with more to come. Also, playing a team five times in one season is crazy but fluky, I guess, though I think we did that recently with Qpac and IIRC lost all 5.

Any word on whether there will be TV coverage of the games? It's going to be difficult for many, myself included to get there at least for Friday's game.

Just as an aside, I listened to Fridgen's remarks on TV last night while watching the replay, and they were accusatory in nature and in my view out of line. I would be stunned if SA ever directed an attack on another player so those kind of remarks are inappropriate.

No TV coverage, just on B2 (and filmed by RPI-TV).

5-0 vs one team, one program moving on and rising, another, going backwards and not rising. Losing a close game, if you want to call 4-2 close means squat. No moral victories in losing at this level. Zero chance Union players were losing to RPI last night or several years to come.

Hey Flag Dude, time to pay up on your bet. Where you bet RPI would finish within 5 of Union(like that is impressive). One finished 1 the other 9th. That would be, "pay up". Said I wouldnt post again until season over, that is the case for RPI.... With the staffs in place, recruits coming in, no better next year

Was on last year? I remember watching, want to say CBS college sports?
I think you are right about last year, but I checked my DVR schedule and it isn't there at least for now. ECAC can't get their championships on TV? Pathetic or maybe they are just trying to get attendance to the 4 figure mark.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

I believe NBCSN is scheduled to televise the Hockey East tournament. Bummer. We can't get to Atlantic City either.:( Yesterday I came upon an old video tape from 1993 of the ECAC Championship game between Clarkson and Brown. I think my son must have taped it. Those were the days . . .

He's correct - CBS College Sports had them last year, but we didn't know that until the week of the championships. I'm sure our buddy Schottsky will have info once it becomes available. It truly is a shame if the league can't get decent TV coverage for their championship weekend.

As for the Curadi incident, Welsh took a whack at Bergin right at the buzzer, then shoved him down from behind. The game was clearly over, so Welsh's actions certainly weren't necessary. Perhaps that's who Curadi was going after, but we'll never know. It was clear to me that Curadi was seeing red (pun intended) and wanted a piece of someone...THAT was classless, IMO. I'm sure Curadi's played long enough to know that trying to mix it up after the buzzer and take away from Union's celebration is a bush league move. That said, I also doubt Appert ordered Curadi to go after Welsh or anyone during the celebrations. Appert did seem to whine a lot, so it's more than likely he was complaining to the refs and Curadi misunderstood. :p

Oh yeah, the game...boy, the tension needed a chain saw to be cut.

A dominant first period by Union set the tone for the rest of the game. From the start of the second period, it was a bend-but-don't-break/prevent defense. What concerns me is that they don't keep up the same pressure in the 2nd & 3rd periods when they have such a lead. I think they got the proverbial wake-up call after the 2nd RPI goal, but even when they did have chances, Merriam came up big on those chances, save for Sullivan's go-ahead goals. As for RPI, this was certainly a different team than what I saw earlier this year. They kept coming at you, limited the turnovers, and had good goaltending .

RPI fans should be proud of how they finished, regardless of their place in the standings. If you know anything about the ECAC, then you know that any team can beat any other, whether it's a 12 seed beating a 5 & 1 in the playoffs or a 10 beating a 7. There's no shame in losing to anyone in this league, especially to a team that has nothing to lose...so you better be prepared.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

The travel sites (i.e Priceline) have rooms at $180 for Friday night at the Tropicana. Check in Fri/check out Sat.

But maybe there's a cheaper rate with the phone number/reference code they list.

Having worked in a casino hotel in Las Vegas, I suggest finding a cheaper hotel off the boardwalk and taking a taxi to and from the games....

The weekend rates in Casino towns are outrageous, so pick wisely....

I will do some checking into some of the back door places online for rates since I used to be a travel agent as well ;)

Have fun guys!

I wish I could be there.

Keith.

Having been to Atlantic City before (for pleasure, not hockey), I would very much agree with finding a motel on the mainland. I'd suggest Absecon NJ (get off at the US 30 exit on the GSP, you'll want to do this anyway because the AC Expressway is a ripoff), as there are plenty of inexpensive ones there, and you'd be able to then take Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd (it's Absecon Blvd on the mainland, but still US 30) right onto the island. Parking, from what I remember, doesn't cost all that much at the hotel garages (some halfway decent daily rates, though I was there on a weekday, so it may go up for a weekend).

Also, if you're looking for a bite to eat before the game, go to the White House Sub Shop on Arctic and Mississippi. Best submarine sandwiches I've ever had.

As for the casino rates, if you really want table games, poker is probably your best bet. I did pretty well at Bally's, but Trump Taj Mahal I hear is very good.

I found a Comfort Inn on US 40 near Pleasantville for $80 and on Hotwire, there is a hidden 4-star hotel in Absecon for about $100. There are many more cheaper places for $35-$50 scattered around, but these are some higher end options.

The Trump Towers parking garage is adjacent to Boardwalk Hall and has a daily rate of $5.

Throw in the free morning eats at most of these hotels and you'll do better than most casinos.

Keith.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Colgate draws 4 against Qpac and Harvard pulls a snowman v. Yale. The top four seeds all hold serve and Union gets Mr. Smith and Company in the semi. Game on!
Anyone having any luck with hotels?

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Should be a good game this Friday afternoon (assuming we get the 4 PM game -- Colgate always gets stuck with that timeslot). I'm sure Union hasn't forgotten what happened last year against Colgate...

So...why did they put us all through the first two rounds if the top 4 seeds were going to advance, anyway?

It's my understanding that the highest seed gets to pick the time they want to play. Can anyone confirm?

Tied for 6 in PWR with RIT dropping in and Yale out as TUCs.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Excited to be heading down to Atlantic City, not happy we have the 4:30 game.

Great night at Union last night. Enjoyed the sweep of RPI.

Not happy either, but at this point I'm just happy there's another weekend of hockey (for us), two for you at least. If the regular season games were anything to go by, Friday's should be an intense battle. I'm excited!

Apparently, you weren't watching the games this weekend. First off, one game was 3-2 and the other should have been 4-3 at minimum. Both contests were tied for a reasonable amount of time. I have Union fans in my extended family, and they (as well as other fans) agree that the disallowed RPI goal should have counted... especially since Union was awarded a similar goal the night before.

RPI fans complain about the reffing not just because there is a (proven) bias against them in the ECAC system... but because it is also inconsistent beyond all belief. The reffing this weekend on BOTH sides of the equation was terrible and inconsistent.

No chance of losing for "years to come"? Don't get ahead of yourself there, sir. Nothing wrong with having confidence in the team you root for, but talking stuff because a program is out of the basement of the league for two years now for the first time in its long history, but getting swept by Brown during the regular season when RPI swept them shows that you really can't make any solid predictions in this league. As for zero chance of losing this past weekend, did you say the same thing when #12 Colgate came to town to play? I repeat myself: with this league, and the fact that college sports in general are very transient, you never know.

I laugh at how you take this so personally, and you are pretty much at odds with almost every other Union fan's opinion that RPI gave them a lot to handle this weekend. I also laugh at how you are taking a proverbial deuce on talented recruits before they have even played a lick of NCAA hockey. Whatever makes you feel better. I'll wait for the day when Union has to go through a rebuilding period and tell you that they're "not on the rise".
