Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

I'm not sure who decides when teams play. Going by this weekend in AC, Union chose to have the early game on Friday. Or maybe ESPNU thinks the other game (Miami OH vs UMass) will get better ratings in prime time.

Skip the UMass, just refer to the River Hawks as Lowell. Makes life easier. See everyone in lovely (gag) Bridgeport! :)

Looking forward to a great weekend......
Tough waiting until Monday to get tickets..

Picked up good tix this afternoon at Harbor Yd box office, very excited about Friday. Hey Bridgeport is still a little dumpy but getting better... not like those showplace cities like Schenectady and Lowell!

Also, I work right down the street from Harbor Yard. If you want a really good meal, go to Ralph and Rich's; it's on the same street as the arena.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

That really sucks. I'm guessing the Union attendance will suffer because of that. I don't really get it either...We were in the 2/3 matchup and we had to play at 3:00 PM last year. Now we're in the 1/4 matchup and we still have to play at 3:00?

It's advantageous to have the early game in case of OTs and such so it won't go into all hours of the night. More time to recoup for the next game if they win.

Now that I've had some time to soak it all in...

Yeah, baby!!!! It's amazing to see this program come from the doldrums and being RPI's little brother to ECAC Champs. Congratulations to the players and coaches!! This is a hard-earned, well-deserved reward for all of the hard work they have gone through this year and in the past 2-3 years. Reaching the championship game in 2010 was a huge step and lessons learned from that season have clearly paid off.

As for the weekend...the semi-final was a typical Union hockey game. Get an early lead and shut them down with good defense and goaltending. Their forechecking game in the 3rd period really killed Colgate and directly resulted in two back-breaking goals. Grosenick was solid and outstanding while maintaining the lead.

I was actually concerned last night once Harvard scored...silly me. This team's resilience showed up once again, spear-headed by a howitzer wrist shot by Welsh (which surprised a lot of people, especially Girard) and continuous, relentless pressure. Elation ensued once Jooris sealed the deal with the empty-netter.

Now that the hump has been cleared, the boys have more work to do. Their record doesn't need to be justified, but let's hope they can win a couple NCAA games and keep this special season rolling.

Top seed gets to choose the time and odds are that Bennett & company used this rationale.. of course that holds up IF you WIN the game. Yale chose the late game last year at Bridgeport so they could have more fans from the New Haven area after work, etc.

As an aside, funniest thing I heard this weekend was Dubrey & Unger postulating that Colgate was playing so well, because they are used to playing in front of no fans :p..

Also, raise your hand if you ever thought you would read this headline, "Boston College, Michigan, Union and North Dakota get No. 1 seeds in the 2012 NCAA tournament".

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

I think the last ECAC team to get to the Frozen Four was the 2003 Cornell team. Hope Union bucks that trend.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

I got back from AC this afternoon and it was like riding on air with the weekend still floating around in my head. After nearly two decades of frustration, and deep rooted and deserved skepticism that we would ever be in this place, well...you know the rest. Congratulations to the team and all involved and yes to we fans who have been with this program through thick and mostly thin.

After the game yesterday we waited outside the locker rooms and were rewarded by the players and coaches trickling out and each getting an ovation from the faithful. They lingered with fans and family and it was an altogether remarkable experience. These are very good people.

On the way back I stopped at the Ramapo rest area and came upon the team which had just gotten off the bus for a rest stop. I asked who was watching the hardware, i.e. Mr. Whitelaw's Cup and was assured that it was safely ensconced in its own seat. Coach asked me if I wanted to get a look at it and they let me on the bus for a peak. That thing is huge and it looked very comfortable sitting there. I got a photo on my iphone but I can figure out how to post it on here.

Next stop Bridgeport as the magic carpet ride continues.

Enjoy this moment everyone, Go U!

Couldn't they have chosen the late game to allow their fans to arrive from the Albany area?

Seriously, I always thought the NCAA set the times and it wasn't up to the #1 seed. Is this new?

Clever.

Seeing "Union" and "No.1 seed" in the same sentence is pretty remarkable, but I'm hoping to see more headlines we never thought possible in the next few weeks. :D

Congrats Union! You have a bunch of fans in RPI TV who will be following you throughout the NCAAs!

Videos on Demand are trickling up. Video from the final is available here: http://www.rpitv.org/productions/452-ecac-final-harvard-vs-union. It's currently only available at 2800kbps (more bitrates are being encoded), so if you have a slower-ish connection it's probably best to wait until tomorrow or so to take a look. We'll have the Semifinal up either Monday or Tuesday as well.
