Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Looks like the bus trip to Tampa is cancelled due to insufficient demand - http://www.dailygazette.com/weblogs...n-wont-have-fan-bus-to-tampa-for-frozen-four/

Hard to be surprised - a 2600 mile round trip on a bus for close to 200 bucks. I think the trip down was 29 hours alone. Brutal. Ferris State also has a bus trip, but theirs was free as long as people bought tickets through them and stayed at the hotel the school had a deal with. Plus, after two consecutive weeks of travel and lodging in AC/Bridgeport, a lot of people are probably tapped out.

But there will be a viewing party for the Thursday game (and Saturday's if there is one) at Messa Rink - http://www.dailygazette.com/weblogs/schott/2012/mar/30/union-hockey-frozen-four-viewing-party/

Does Union have a special deal with any specific hotel? Seems like the three hotels right next to the arena are all $300+ per night so it'd be nice to get some discount on one of them.

Not that I know of. A friend is staying at the Marriott Courtyard which I think is within a mile and more reasonable.

According to the TU, concessions will be available at the Messa Rink viewing and the first 400 fans get boomstix.

And, checking in from Rochester, The Chef is going off to TAMPA!

My father understands my love for Union hockey, and they happen to be snowbirding down there. He asked if I could get two days off from work. He is sponsoring air fare and tix for the event for the boy and me. I am deeply honored and pleased to get this opportunity to cheer for the team that taught me to love hockey.

And yes, I am bringing the flag.

TU Troy Grosenick feature - http://www.timesunion.com/sports/article/Grosenick-pretty-good-off-ice-too-3450358.php

Surprising that the TU has had better print coverage than the Gazette this past week.

With all due respect to Ken Schott (who has had excellent coverage of Union for years), this doesn't surprise me. The TU is classic for giving more coverage to the "better" team in the area. Of course, only one local team is still playing, so there is no choice on who to cover.

Maybe the TU is just making up for the years that they didn't give Union any respect. :p

Good luck to the Dutchmen in Tampa. Bring home the title and make us ECACers proud!

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

So....is there a meetup bar for the Garnets before the Thursday game? Maybe at one of the hotels close to the arena? I asked on Union Hockey Blog. We're flying in early Thurday morning and looking for a spot to head to for a bit before the game.

Just to let you all know who are going to Tampa. There is a teams red carpet arrival on thursday from 2-230 for our game at 4:30. Each team arrives by the west plaza and walks into the rink I assume on the red carpet where you can line it if you so choose to see the team walk in to the rink.

Do you know where the team is staying? I believe practices on Wednesday are also open to the public.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

$300 for a hotel room is crazy money for Florida in April. Lots of motels in the area and across the bridge in St Pete. The trolley cars run right past the arena. When I have gone to hockey games there in the past I have driven to Ybor City area, parked, had early dinner at a Cuban restaurant and taken trolley to and from the arena.

Edited to add: the Cuban place is "Colombia". Good Cuban food, great Sangria. Just do not order a dinner and also get their trademark salad as the salad is a meal in itself and you will not finish everything.
