STUPID rule. Never enough cowbell~ that is part of what hockey is about. I can't watch without a cowbell either. It isn't natural. I brought in 5-carefully camoflaged in shirts, a scarf and a glove after someone told me they heard Miami fans ringing bells like mad. Just don't make them obvious. If they are stinky at the Frozen four bring a few big jingle bells and a wide mouth gatorade bottle empty. Insert bell. Intant noisemaker. or a penny/dime works in water bottles. (Learned this watching students at a HS tournament that had the stupid rule too. They had big detergent bottles and rocks). Good Luck in Tampa! We were rather disappointed that our cowbells were banned from the arena. We had to walk back to the Holiday Inn and leave them in the car. The first time Union scored I instinctively reached for the bell. The fellow who was frisking us said it was an NCAA rule.
A little later we noticed that a few others were allowed to bring in their bells. They must have had a different security guard frisk them.![]()
Cornell's cowbell was clearly heard during the telecast in both of their games. Don't you just love consistency? We were rather disappointed that our cowbells were banned from the arena. We had to walk back to the Holiday Inn and leave them in the car. Love the kudos but not entirely correct (not disputing Cinderella status tho). The University of Lowell was born of the merger of Lowell Tech and Lowell State, both of which were born the 1890s. We've only been in D1 hockey for a bit longer than Hockey East has been around. Not to mention that said contenders like Michigan, Colorado College, Boston College, Minnesota, et al, have been D-I teams since the 50s and 60s. What was great about last night's final was that UMass-Lowell as a school has only been in existence since the mid-70s. So one of the "Cinderellas" was going to make it to the big time.
Brown has a hockey team?Blame Brown's coach for being a whiny brat during the 1987 Freakout. That's why you can't bring in your cowbells.
I hate whiny brats. He obviously had no sense of humor.
I guess our fault was being upfront about the bells. Certainly wouldn't have been if we'd known about the "rule." Next time I'll be a lot more creative. Love lespw1's ideas.
The NCAA is working hard to suck all the fun out of the games.
Artificial noisemaking devices have been a violation of NCAA rules for at least 30 years that I can recall. (Playing Rule 6, Section 30, 2 minute bench minor). A seem to recall an instruction to officials that if it could not be determined who was using an illegal noisemaker it would be a bench minor on the home team.
I recall Harvard, at Bright Arena always used to enforce the rule. They did have a problem with RPI fans who at one time used to bring big red plastic horns. The problem was the RPI people used to wave the horns vigourously and on one occasion an elderly lady fan got a severe eye injury from her eye being hit. I also recall that at one point a few Cornell fans used to bring whistles which could really mess things up as players would think it was an officials whistle.
Of course nowadays, Harvard tends to play bad music at very loud sound levels at all times play is in progress. Horrible IMHO.
Union guys, Good Luck in Final Four.
Bad news for those who don't like early games - Schott reports Union will play at 4:30 PM on 4/5. ESPNU airs it.

This isn't shocking. The 1st game is on ESPN U the 2nd is on ESPN2...which more people get. Would ESPN rather put UMD/BC and UND/Minn on national TV or Union and Ferris? They prob figured TV ratings would be better for the "big teams"...we're stuck on the U @ 4:30. I could care less...i'll be saddled up at a bar watching in Saratoga, probably Irish Times. Can't afford the $600 flight + $200 tickets.
Ditto. I blew my recreation budget for the month in Bridgeport. I was naively surprised at the cost of the tickets (having went to the last one in '03) but not the plane fare. Does anyone know what Capital District places (with tasty beverages) will be available for us Union fans to gather and watch the games? This isn't shocking. Lets go U!
I would keep my eye on the U Athletics website for possible viewing parties.Ditto. I blew my recreation budget for the month in Bridgeport.
