Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Fun fact: Union has not lost to a CCHA opponent this year, beating Michigan, Michigan State, and tying Western Michigan twice.

Anyone have much on Ferris St?

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Good luck to Union in Tampa. I'm sure you'll be a strong competitor; would have loved to have made it an all-ECAC SF.

Just got back from Bridgeport and I'm still in shock. Never thought I'd see this day. There have been a lot of "pinch me" moments this season and this certainly takes the cake. UNION COLLEGE is going to the FROZEN FOUR! Absolutely unbelievable. Greatest hockey game I have ever watched/attended in my life.

Cannot wait to go to Tampa!!

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Congratulations, Union. Enjoy your first trip to the FF. That save Grosenick made last night was Hasek/Thomas-esque.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Great game guys and enjoy the ride. As we (UML) know too well, it can be a while before you get there again. We're kind hoping for 12 months instead of 16 years this time, though. :D

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

If any of you local fans (or your friends) need tickets to Tampa, I have a line on two extras from a friend we have attended with the past few years. Schedules and finances didn't work out for several of our group this year so we ended up with some spares which he is selling for face value. The seats are in section 302, Row H, right around the blue line.

Drop me a line at gary@withoutapeer.com if you're interested and I'll put you in touch with him.

Great game. Hadn't seen your team play before- you guys are the real deal. Good luck in Tampa!

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

As others have said....another "pinch me" moment from this spectacular season!

I won't be able to make it to Tampa, but I'll be watching. This is a ride that shouldn't end!

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Most of it has already been said so I'll just post a few of my observations and thoughts.

The Union faithful outnumbered UML which had me floored, easily 2x the numbers from Friday and would estimate close to 1000. Most vocal crowd at a Union road game that I can recall.

The Union D corps really are silent assassins. NJW, Forgaard, Stuart, may not be flashy but are they are solid and steady. Bodes, Ghost and Coburn are standouts of course but combined with the first three really get the job done.

This group of coaches and players never seem to get rattled. That fluke goal to make it 3-2 would have been a perfect time to panic, but it wasn't gonna happern. I don't think UML had more than another 2 or 3 shots for the duration.

I'd like to recognize Nate Leaman without whose vision and leadership Union hockey would likely still be a 40 percenter if that. He was almost solely responsible for dragging Union hockey by sheer force of will and persistence into a position where it could be competitive. This is in no way a slight to Rick Bennett and his magnificent coaches. This is clearly their team and they have reached the apex by putting their own imprint on this group and I would not trade ours for any other staff.

I've read a lot about how Union has grabbed its first FF after only 21 years as a D-1 program. Is 21 years not a long time? To me it seems to have been an eternity. Not sure what I'm missing here.

I don't know about the rest of the U faithful, but I can certainly use a week off to regather myself.

On to Tampa.

21 years is not altogether that long given the relative disparity in program strength throughout the country over the last 60 years. The gap is a lot closer now than it was even in the 90's, but 90 percent of D1 programs are not going to be perennial contenders for the Frozen Four.

key here is zero scholarships, togh admissions and tough staying there.

no one else in final 6 has that, coupled with tough to get need based only aid.

Union is what is good about college hockey

A totally awesome weekend! I've only now started to breathe normally.:D

Talk about pinching? My bruises haven't disappeared totally from the ECAC tournament. Now I have fresh ones to add to my collection! Never in my 21 years of being a Union fan did I ever think I would be using "Union" in the same sentence as "Frozen Four."

I'm still hoping it's real and that I don't wake up to discover it's only a dream.

Absolutely an amazing team.

Not to mention that said contenders like Michigan, Colorado College, Boston College, Minnesota, et al, have been D-I teams since the 50s and 60s. What was great about last night's final was that UMass-Lowell as a school has only been in existence since the mid-70s. So one of the "Cinderellas" was going to make it to the big time.

I'll echo Wholin1's sentiments about Nate Leaman. Without his leadership and persistence, this program would not be where it is today. That said, just as much credit should be going to Rick Bennett, who was monumentally instrumental in the recruiting process that brought every single one of these players to Schenectady. I joked last weekend in AC that it was Nate Leaman's team and Rick Bennett's championship, but Bennett is as truly deserving of the accolades as anyone.

Seconded. I'll also note that President Ainlay is the polar opposite of his predecessor when it comes to Union Hockey. He and his wife, Judith are the biggest fans of the program. They were on the west coast this past week and had to jump through all kinds of hoops to get back in time for the game Friday night. They are genuine down to earth people and great to have behind the team.

We were rather disappointed that our cowbells were banned from the arena. We had to walk back to the Holiday Inn and leave them in the car. The first time Union scored I instinctively reached for the bell. The fellow who was frisking us said it was an NCAA rule.

A little later we noticed that a few others were allowed to bring in their bells. They must have had a different security guard frisk them.

Hate that. Wish you'd been allowed to bring them in.

It is an NCAA rule. You can thank us for that one. ;)

Quite frankly, you should have had a minor penalty every time it was heard during your ECAC games.
