Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

As an RPI fan, I have nothing but respect for Union after watching their NCAA tournament win tonight. Though I think the score should have been at minimum 3-2 (as I'm sure any objective hockey fan would agree with), achieving the first program win in the NCAA tournament after only arriving there the second time in program history is very impressive. There will be those who take a deuce on the ECAC and everything it stands for, but eastern hockey is where it is at and I'm very happy for you guys. Though my bracket says differently, I'd love to see Union advance as far as possible.

Nice job!!

Signed,

A passionate RPI and ECAC fan

It was a great win to witness, Lowell reminded me of Yale last year, real quick. Should be a great game and I will be cheering on the U.

I predicted that Union would beat Michigan State! The Dutchmen looked very poised out there (and the game reminded me of the Yale-North Dakota regional two years ago).

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Pinch me time here in CT. This has been a magical season and it continues tomorrow. I was very impressed with MSU's game, they were quicker than I expected and forechecked like crazy. Union bent at times but didn't break. I don't think this team could have won this game last year or even earlier this season, but they've been battle tested and never seem to panic. It's also reassuring to have Troy Grosenick backing us up. I saw him after the game signing some autographs for some little kids and as a friend of mine said, it looked just like he had come from the library...a very modest and unassuming young man.

Props also to the Union faithful who were out in force and loud. Should be even more on hand tomorrow. Thanks also to the Sacred Hart band, they were great.

Its nice and appreciated to see all of the support from other fans here on USCHO and from around the league. I know we'd all like to see the ECAC gain some respect around the country and maybe see Union and Cornell carry the banner all the way to Tampa.

I'll second the "pinch me" comment. Another solid effort turns into another landmark win for this program. There certainly have been a lot of firsts for Union over the past couple years!

I questioned the waved-off goal, also, but after understanding the rule, it appears the referees made the right call (at least that will make me feel better about it). Outside of that, I thought Union was the better team on the ice and deserved to win. I'd like to see some more chances converted (3-on-none and Zajac missing a wide open net), but their defensive discipline is what wins these games. Jeremy Welsh continues to show how valuable he is to this team, but almost as much as Troy Grosenick. :D

T-minus 11 hours until puck drop!

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Go Union. Rep the ECAC (since I won't be rooting for Hotel Management U. in Green Bay today).

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Go back to your rpi thread, they dont need a moron like you invading their thread.

Actually root for both CD teams and am personal friends with several parents on Union as I have watched a few there kids right through juniors. Great call on Miami!!! Good job Union. Rooting for Cornell also tonite. Good luck tonite.

..and I'll third these and Wholin's comments. Truly an amazing season and really need to appreciate it now, since things like this won't happen all the time. The coaches really learned from last year's post season and have built a team that is resilient enough to pull out wins in different ways against different opponents. And while I think the MSU goal that was waived off probably should have counted, I also think that the boys would have found a way to win anyway.

Not much time to savor this one though.. UML is going to be the toughest game of the season, which is what each NCAA game is (duhh!), and U is going to have to play better. The River Hawks have a lot more offensive juice than the Spartans did and Grosenick can't be relied on to stop every grade AA chance. A little concerned yesterday that the refs seemed to let a LOT of obvious stuff go uncalled penalty wise and that it could happen again, but U did seem to adjust to that too.

And also have to say, that I tuned in right after the game to the radio guys, and IF U wins tonight they better have some supplemental oxygen ready for Brien Unger.. he was practically hysterical at the thought of "Union College in the Frozen Four".. and can't say I disagree with him.

You couldnt have had a better outcome. Union is 2 goals better then Lowell. They didnt match up well with Miami biut do so with Lowell. Lowell does not match up well with teams who work very hard and have some firepower. Union is the favorite here for sure and if they lose, pretty good upset.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Union should approach Lowell like they are playing Yale circa 2011, they have a breakout that is very fast and surprised Miami with it in the first period. As shown in the third UML was taken aback by Miami's physical forecheck, and i think a well thought out plan of game long forechecking will keep them on their heels. Gonna be a close game, but I think Grosenick is the difference . Good luck today, I will be in the building supporting your team.

I'm hoping Rick Bennett is on the phone with Nate Leaman right now.

I don't see that happening but who knows. It didn't look like either UML or Miami were playing much D last night and I think with our defensive abilities and Troy in goal, we actually do matchup pretty well with UML, but that's just my two cents.

In addition to Rick Bennett I also think the Union assistants deserve some praise. I understand that Joe Dumais is doing a wonderful job and what can you say about Jason Tapp? I think its a lot more than coincidence that Union has produced two of the best goaltenders in the country under his tutelage. The team and the coaching staff really seem to be on the same page.

I saw the boys getting into the hotel this a.m. after their pregame skate, and I have to say that outwardly they look a lot calmer than I feel. It's all good at this point so why not U?

Hope to see a big drive down crowd this evening, I'm sure there will be a big UML turnout as well.

Question for Union fans, now that you have had experience with this: If Union loses at some point (or even goes on to win the NC :shutter:) How long before Welsh and/or Grosenick sign pro contracts? Who else has a shot and might leave early?

I think Welsh leaves pretty quickly, Grosenick, I think might stay, he has only had one year and was injured for a little bit. I don't see anyone else leaving.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

I would be surprised if Jeremy Welsh does not leave. He is only a few credits short of graduating, would need to matriculate as a grad student at $50K plus and is going to be 24 in a little while. I don't think his stock will ever be much higher and as much as we'd like to see him stay, I think it's unlikely. He will of course be missed. I've gotten to know him and his family a bit (but would never speak with them about this issue) and they are great people.

Intuitively I think Troy will return.

Let's worry about this after Tampa. ;)

I hope you're right and do feel that Miami would have been a tougher match-up for U, as they were big & physical as well as fast. But as a cautious Union fan I'm definitely not counting any eggs going into the game with UML - they certainly looked very good for most of the game last night.

Miami is a classic example of a team with 4 lines and players who all think they are first liners. Just look at them in 3rd period and the way they carried the play. Same crap that Wisconsin etc deal with, to many draft picks and advisors. Would have been much tougher to have to win vs Miami

Union matches up perfect. Similar to PC they will trap, cycle and work very hard. Difference is they have a very high end up front and a goalie who is one of the tops in country. Not trying to hex them but the stars have lined up for Union...

Good luck tonight; it's been a while since the league had a team in the Frozen Four.
