Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic City!

"It's not anything they did at all, O’Neill said. “We just didn't work hard enough."

Way to be a gracious loser.

I can't get too worked up over what a player says unless it's a totally inappropriate comment. These are kids after all not politicians. (I will say though that I've seen a lot of coverage on the local, RPI and Union kids and they generally come off as thoughtful and sportsmanlike.) On the other hand coaches have more experience in dealing with the media and it's part of their job. I don't particularly care for Allain's style and he can be dismissive, but I guess that's just the way he rolls. I will say that based on what I saw from last night's press conference he should probably dial back on the Ambien. :D

Lineup changes tonight: Boileau and Ikkala in. IIRC, K. Bodie and Sullivan are out. Same defensive pairings, not much leeway there.

I agree we shouldn't get too bothered by the players' comments, but this isn't the first "it's all about us" comment from a Yale player. Even if players really think that (including anyone from Union, RPI, Cornell, etc), you still can't say it. They really need to show some sportsmanship and respect for the competition.

On a different topic, does anyone have details about the auction for the jerseys from last night's game? Matt Dubrey & Dan Fridgen talked about this, but didn't say when or how the auction would occur.

I get it about the comments but please remember these are Yale men of the uber class. :p

My understanding is that the Garnet Blades bought these unis for the team intending to sell them as a fundraiser. I'll try to get the details and post them here later this week. But as the Coach said, those plans may have changed ;).

Spent the day to Saratoga bozzing. (Much better bars)

Headed over to Messa for the Brown game and some pre-game cocktails and burgers outside the rink. I have not seen any pre-game activities.

Hopefully Union packs the place again. It'e been great hockey, however its not a hockey town.

Go Dutchmen.

Well done helping us put together a Capital District sweep! Here's to doing it again next week.

When the Harkness debacle was chronicled in Time Magazine some thirty five years ago, Union was described as "quiet and scholarly." Today no one would argue that the college is not still scholarly. But quiet? Apparently the decibel level at Achilles on Friday night broke the meter and for very good reason. The story of hockey's resurrection as a varsity sport at Union includes a very circuitous route to the the biggest victory of the modern era. Nate Leaman has done an astounding job. The Yale victory was a sine qua non.

Posted a poll for ECAC's top freshman. You can vote more than once if you feel more than one player warrants a vote...every vote counts!

The current plans for the alternate black vintage jerseys are to first, reserve the senior jerseys for the respective players. A couple will likely be silent auction items at the Garnet Blades golf tournament in June. The remainder will likely be made available first for purchase by Garnet Blade members who should watch for e-mails and the remainder put on sale at the rinkside Spirit Shop either later this season or next. I will provide additional details as the plans become more defined.

Has your team actually worn them for any games other than vs. RPi at Messa?

I hope Union decides to hold onto the black jerseys for at least the rest of the season. Not only do they look sharp on the ice, but they have brought the team great luck so far.

Thanks! I remember not too long ago, they did some sort of public jersey auction (I think even on eBay) where all winning bids went to charity or to the Garnet Blades.

I would think it unlikely that they will be disposed of while still "undefeated". ;)

How do the Dutchmen eclipse their biggest victory in the history of the program? They find themselves one week later down three goals (one shorthanded) to a ranked Princeton team just seven minutes into the second period at Princeton. By the period's end the juggernaut that is the Union hockey team has scored FOUR unanswered goals to take the lead. The final period sees two more for the Dutchmen, who go on to win the grittiest victory of an astounding season. The significance of this remarkable comeback can not be overestimated. Resilience and determination are two phenomena that immediately come to mind. The Yale game and the Princeton game will likely be regarded as the two contests that define the season. A truly unbelievable night!

I think you can tell a lot about a team when adversity like this hits. You always hear about how they could have packed it in and taken the road loss (of which there would have been no shame to a ranked team in their building), but these guys don't do such a thing.

Six unanswered goals?!?!?!? Wow...I'm certainly impressed.
