Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic City!

well tonight totally sucked....

The maintenance crew at Achilles is hopefully spraying industrial strength Febreze throughout the rink. Smelly, smelly, smelly is all one can ascribe to the Dartmouth loss. We can even smell it down here! The vaunted power play...the vaunted PK...nonexistent. Maybe heads were getting a bit too fat in Schenectady. Harvard will not be a cakewalk. The Cantabs are desperate for a "W." The Dutchmen are a perfect target.

Nate Leaman may have alluded to that during his post-game comments. If the players are reading and seeing all of the good publicity, it can get to their heads if they let it.

Dartmouth attacked and pressured Union all night and Union had no answer. The passing lanes were covered, shots were blocked, and breakout passes were challenged. Even when Hatch had two breakaway chances, Mello stoned him twice.

That said, I still thought Union had enough good chances to score. Pres-Zajac-Hatch was the best line (and probably the only good one) all night. But during one flurry in the second period, about 7 or 8 bodies were scrambling around the crease with Mello out of position and Union still couldn't bury it. That pretty much summarized the evening.

This game could have gone a long way to separate Union from Dartmouth in the standings and the PWR. At least they have less than 24 hours for a little bit of redemption and despite Harvard's record, the boys better not expect a cakewalk.

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

It really looked like we were not ready to play last night. Dartmouth had a lot of early jump and the Dutch seemed a step slow. Of course the back to back Forgaard penalties didn't help, but even so, the PK wasn't there either. The fact that U took a couple of penalties while on the PP didn't help either, one being during a 5 on 3 opportunity. Hatch got stoned twice on breakaways, at least the 4th time that I can recall that happening to him. With his speed he's going to have a lot of those sorts of chances, hopefully as he develops he'll start to pop on those. This loss really hurt in both the standings and the Pairwise. Dartmouth is a good team and Mello seems to have our number, but the Big Green always matches up well with us as does Harvard, making this one of the toughest tandems on Union's annual league schedule. Though having a dismal season, I don't expect Harvard to roll over and play dead, so there had best be a marked improvement by the boys tonight or it could be a horrendous weekend.

I think Ingoldsby's extended absence is beginning to take its toll as he is plays way above the level of a freshman. Rick Bennett postulated after the game last night that it was possible that being as thin as we are on D, that those playing may be getting a tad complacent with no competition for playing time, unlike I might add there is up front. I would expect a lineup change or two among the forwards tonight, perhaps Cain or even Boileau or Ikkala. Anyway, no need to panic over one loss, just bear down and get it done. Go U!

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

That was a very poor effort and reminded me of a lot of the games back in the "40% is good enough" era. I can take that Dartmouth played very well in the 1st period and deserved the lead they got (they are a very good team), but it was disappointing to me in the 2nd & 3rd periods that Union never really seemed to regain any composure & discipline and get back to playing "Union hockey". The players looked like they were in desperation mode for the last 2 periods and resorted to a lot of individual efforts and wild shots on goal from anywhere on the ice (many of which actually never were on goal). There seemed to be a total lack of leadership and poise with the puck, and U never got their physical, grinding game going. Dartmouth obviously had a lot to do with that, as they were clogging the neutral zone and putting up a picket line around Mello, but U just looked very tentative in all their physical play and lost all the important puck battles. Which isn't to say that some players didn't put in extraordinary efforts to get U back in the game. Kinkaid was really outstanding and made several huge stops that kept U in the game. If Matty Hatch had scored on even half of his grade A opportunities he would have been the hero of the game. Thought that Kyle Bodie & the 4th line in general played well too, but U really needed some upperclassmen to take charge and pop a big goal at a key time (Mario & Jason where are you!!). Also thought it a little strange that Cain didn't play, given the Big Green's size & physical play.. and to nitpick the coaches, have to think they would have liked to have had a timeout available when they got the 2-man advantage in the 2nd period.. U looked very disorganized on that one and led to the bad penalty.

This continues what I'm coming to term as Union's "enigma season". They look so so good and disciplined against teams that have the slightest weakness and/or don't bring their A games, but against good teams that bring any semblance of an A game they fall flat, make mistakes and can't raise their level of play. I'm not ready to throw the team under the bus, and hopefully this is just another painful learning experience, but the boys better turn it around quick. Harvard will be tough tonight.. and Yale next Friday will be a total train wreck if there isn't big improvement.

Phew...didn't want to lose to Harvard after the Friday night stinker. The Union artillery was impressive but the Crimson keeper was too. That was a must win.
Interesting that Dartmouth was crushed over in Troy. It seems that ECAC losses are more significant than in the other leagues. We will see on Monday.
Does the season hinge on beating Yale? Probably no bigger game in the history of the program! The comment on the Dutchmen's record in big games was spot on. A "W" will be defining. Furthermore, Brown is no slouch.

A must win,for sure, if Union still has designs on first place. Realistically, though, NOT bigger than your ECAC Tourney final last year vs. the Big Red...... wouldn't you agree?
P.S. I am still sticking with my (much) earlier pick of Yale, Union, RPI, and Dartmouth for the trip to The Boardwalk.

I thought last night's game vs Haaaaavard was very well played by both teams. Teams like Harvard are dangerous as their record does not indicate how good they can play on any given night. What a different Union team after they scored....they elevated their intensity and sense of urgency. Haaaaavard can be a very frustrating team to play against as they don't give you very much offensively. Great win!!!!

Some of us thought that Harvard deserved a point, given how well they played and how well Carroll played in net. That can be a dangerous team in the first round of the playoffs.

Yale...Friday night will be defining. No excuses...the Dutchmen either have it or don't. A loss, though not the end of the world, would be tough to digest and may leave the team with their collective nose against the NCAA window. Yale is not invincible. With Brown one of only two teams to beat them, Saturday night will be a dogfight as well. A win over Yale spools up the turbo for the remainder of the regular season. This is really, really big!

Please get them banged up and a few of them suspended for a game. :D ;)

If Yale is on their game tonight then the only way Union can knock them off is to knock them off, their feet, that is. U has to slow them down all over the ice particularly in transition. Easier said than done, perhaps, but not out of the question. A true test tonight, indeed, contenders or pretenders? We should know by 9:00 or maybe earlier. Go U!

Agreed. The team has been looking for a program defining win the last few years and there's no better time than tonight for it to happen. The guys need to play their game and I think we'll be fine.

Biggest win in Union hockey (regular season) history? I think so! We just beat the #1 team in the nation!!!

Incredible...who would of thought just a few short years ago that Union would ever beat a #1 team? It's time to celebrate in Schenectady! On to Brown tomorrow!
