Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic City!

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

Huhhhh??????;):D

Nice game by Kinkaid and important points in the standings, but will need a much better effort tomorrow night in Ithaca.

Yeah...what curse?

Nate clearly wasn't happy with the performance, but it's a good thing when you don't play your best and sneak out a road win in this conference. The boys will definitely need a better effort tonight, as Cornell's demise was greatly exaggerated. Just don't give them too many power plays.

Well, didn't see this coming... Has Union EVER had this four points? Probably not, since they have almost never won at Colgate. Great to see this result. Maybe, just maybe, dare to dream.

I thought I heard the radio guy say you won at Lynah the same weekend you last won at Starr - 1998? Whatever, your guys dominated tonight. Shot total something like 47-17. Great job.

I heard the same thing.

It was an awesome weekend especially when all of that negative history is considered. And how about these freshman? Back to it next weekend. The team will enjoy this for a day or two and then back to business. I'm sure the boys won't be getting swelled heads, no time for complacency, particularly with Dartmouth coming in who always give U fits.

Going completely off memory, this is correct, as well as I believe 2 years before that the '96-'97 season or thereabouts.

Well that was certainly a better effort last night :). Excellent weekend and kudos to the boys for "out-Cornelling" Cornell as Schottzkie said.. Have to remember that this may be as poor as Colgate & Cornell have been in a long time, but still a nice accomplishment and puts the team very much in control for getting a 1st round bye.

The next 2 weekends are very big, as U will play 2 real TUC teams in Dartmouth & Yale. Both are playing well and, depending on how Clarkson & Princeton do down the stretch, this could be U's last chance to help their PWR.

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

According to Ken Schott "Carr's goals came on the power play, giving him nine for the season. That ties the team Division I-era record for power-play goal in a season. Chris Ford had nine in 1993-94." I have a feeling that record is going to be his alone very soon. He has 14 goals and 26 points overall. I don't know what the Union record is in these stats for freshmen but I have to believe he may have a shot at those as well.

It looks like Yale is going to be out of reach for first the way they (and particularly Rondeau) are playing, but if Union can keep their collective skates on the accelerator, a top four finish and maybe second place, looks very realistic. I hope I don't look back at these words in a few weeks as I wipe the egg off my face. :o.

For those in the area, maybe think about stopping in at Bomber's Burrito Bar in Schenectady Tuesday night at 6:00 for the inaugural Coach's Corner broadcast. It should be fun and give Union fans a chance to chat with Nate Leaman. It would also be a nice way to show our support.

Well, you sure threw the hex on Yale...as you said, hope that statement doesn't backfire on us!

Chris Ford had 20 goals and 35 points his freshman year (93-94), which are team records for a rookie. As a BTW, the 35 points by Ford was the most by a U player at the D-1 level at the time and lasted another 10 years before Webb & Beal broke it at 36 points. Assuming U has a decent post-season run, Carr has a chance of breaking both rookie marks.

And to add more fuel to the "new rink" fire, the radio guys did an interview with Leaman that played between periods last night and they asked him that direct question (i.e. "Have you thought about and discussed with the administration the possibility of a new rink"). Nate's response was essentially "Well yeah.. for the last 8 years!". Sounded like there have been recent discussions and Nate specifically mentioned the issues with tight seating space and limited rest rooms, concessions, and offices for staff. The big issue of course is money, and the most feasible (i.e. economical) plan may involve doing a total rehab of Messa and possibly expanding capacity.

More weekly honors for U. Keith Kinkaid GOTW in the ECAC. BTW, Harry Z of Brown was player of the week...not one of my favorite players. SLU's Greg Carey ROTW, he can play a little. Even Union's lady icers got into the act with GOTW Kate Gallagher who made 73 saves combined v. Cornell and Colgate though in losing efforts, of course.

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

Congrats to KK for a very good weekend and GOW honors. U definitely would not have had 4 points without him and he has played very well the last 2 weekends. Hopefully can keep it up.

And in case anyone hasn't heard, the NCAA has "tweaked" the formula for the PWR ratings. Instead of the TUCs being the top 25 RPI ranked teams, it is now any team with an RPI over .500. As of right now, this increases the TUC teams to 34. I'm not sure why the NCAA is doing this, and there is conversation to that effect on another thread, but apparently this was how the PWR was calculated several years ago.

For U, this means there are now 7 other ECAC teams that are TUCs - adding Quinnipiac, Brown & Clarkson to Yale, Dartmouth, RPI, & Princeton - and it is very possible that Niagara & RIT will eventually be TUCs if they continue to do well in Atlantic. This also increases the probability of U playing a TUC (hopefully) in the 2nd round of the playoffs. The only down side is this pretty much guarantees losses to Bemidji, WMU & Alaska will count in U's TUC record. IMO this is mostly good news, as U should now have like 6-10 more games against TUCs, most of which will be at home, as compared to what could have been as few as 2 TUC games left (Dartmouth & Yale). And even if one or two ECAC teams drops out, there will still be more ECAC teams than would have happened with the old system - last year there were only 3 ECAC TUC teams and it hurt U in the PWR that wins against RPI & SLU didn't count. I also like that U now can more directly effect their PWR with games against other TUCs, rather than hoping that other teams help them out.

Gotta love the freshmen. If the upper classmen start to fire, the Dutchmen will be on their way to unprecedented success. In any event, it's still a great story!

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

Dartmouth...to borrow Merrimack coach Mark Dennehy's line, this is the most important game of the season... because it's the next game. We are talking turkey now. Dartmouth is good. The excruciatingly long DI hockey season poses incredible challenges each weekend. How the Leamans of the world succeed so brilliantly is incredible. Doubtless, the Dutchmen realize they are on the cusp of something very special this year. We hear "no jump" when an "L" is incurred. Well, there's no room for "no jump" at this juncture. The Union arsenal is impressive. It is imperative that no guns get jammed from this point onward.

Headed up to UC for Yale/Brown weekend. Any good hockey bars before or after games?

Thanks in advance

You realize you're talking about Schenectady don't you? ;) Actually I could ask the same of Pres. Obama who will be in town tomorrow. A couple of places to consider are Pinhead Susan's and Aperitivo Bistro. Bomber's Burrito Bar also. I think you can Google them.

After I meet President Obama, I'll be heading to Messa for the game. I don't think I can stay for Saturday's game but Friday is more important anyway. LET'S GO U!
