Union College: 2022-2023

Bright is a great place to see a hockey game. Despite the loss, we played well, especially during the first period. Some excellent passing, we pretty much skated with them throughout. After the first period, Harvard stepped it up a gear. With 13 draft pics, Harvard has great talent. Unless things change, we are going to be on the road for the first round. However, we have still contributed a lot to the league this year including some of the leading scorers for Qpac and Cornell.

It’s 15…..most in Cowledge Hawkey

Hard to figure out how this will end and who will get home ice for the next round. Assuming both RPI and Union lose to Qpac and defeat Princeton, then we have a three-way tie, and I am not sure of all the tiebreakers. In the unlikely event that Yale wins both of theirs and RPI and Union lose both, then Yale will end up in 7th. Not sure that any of the matters. RPI and Union do well at home, but Princeton does relatively well on the road. Going to be an interesting weekend.

I think someone mentioned the first tiebreaker is number of league wins, but I think the likely matchup will be RPI v. Union with the only question being whose rink the game is at.

Looks like we snuck into 8th place and pushed Princeton into 9th, so it's home ice. Remarkable. We were greatly aided by Princeton losing 8 of its last 10. A new season starts next week.

And it’s a 4pm start next Saturday at Messa.

I apologize if I missed this discussion, but why so many 4pm starts this year?

Chris Theodore did not have a great senior year at Union. Perhaps he can start producing in the next three games. Owen Farris has been fun to watch this year. He always plays hard and gives a good account of himself. Definitely an asset to Union hockey.

I don't have a good feeling about this one-and-done one-game series. I wonder how this came about. How are decisions like this made? What do the coaches feel about it? This time around, I think it works to the Dutchmen's advantage, but if a goalie gets hot, it's bad news for the other team. Princeton was very hot at the beginning of the year and looked like a possible top-four team when they lost their goalie. Their backup goalie is like 1-8. This explains their collapse. They have some decent offense. They also play well on the road. Whoever wins faces Qpac, and this may motivate Princeton. Clarkson and Colgate are going to be very upset if they lose. I think Princeton takes it, 4-3.

Sorry about today’s game. Lots of back-and-forth action. Didn’t like the way Princeton’s captain mocked the crowd with his goal celebrations. Not very classy. Don’t worry, we will take care of them next weekend.

Thanks !!! I will be at Bright, cheering on Harvard

Question for the Union faithful: Have there been any recent updates from the school on the proposed move to a new ice rink at Mohawk Harbor ?

The last report on this in the Schenectady Gazette in October of last year said that a new rink was far down the road. From what I know, we are not going to build a new rink, just a long-term lease on a public rink that the City of Schenectady is building about a mile away. Someone may know more, as I am not up to date on this.

Yes. The proposal was for Galesi to build the rink at Mohawk Harbor and Union would be the anchor tenant....but I don't recall hearing anything about the school formalizing a commitment to that.

If Colgate knocks off Harvard, then there is there a possibility of four ECAC teams making it to the NCAA tournament. Cornell is 14 but may slip further if there are many tournament upsets. I remember how ugly the Cornell fans were back in 2012 and 2013 in Garden City and Lake Placid when they lost to Harvard and Union. Hope we get all four teams in the tournament. Would love to see Qpac and Harvard in different regionals but probably will not happen.

Yep, called this one. Congrats to Colgate !!! Four ECAC teams in the tournament. Awesome !!!

Congrats on the ECAC in getting four teams into the NCAA tournament. Well done, all and especially Colgate. The question now becomes how far with they go and whether any will make it to Tampa, Florida. Obviously, we all would hope that three of the teams to be playing in Tampa would be from the ECAC.

Looking at the "College Hockey News" listing for Interconference Records, it looks like the ECAC is fourth behind the BigTen, NCHC, and Hockey East. This is not a perfect indication of league strength but only a proxy. It all depends on which teams have what level of non-conference competition. The overall league standing does not vary much from year to year.

2022‑23 Inter-Conference Records

Atlantic Hockey 27-50-7 (.363)
Big Ten 49-18-3 (.721)
CCHA 25-34-4 (.429)
ECAC 46-49-13 (.486)
Hockey East 55-37-9 (.589)
NCHC 50-30-5 (.618)

Another indication is how well we do against the weakest league, the Atlantic Hockey League. Here the ECAC only managed a 14-9-3 record.

Another and perhaps better indication of our performance would be how well our four teams have done against the top 20 (pairwise) competition. The Ivy teams are handicapped here because their schedule starts late, the number of games is limited, and our nonconference opponents are usually not aligned with midwest heavyweights (Harvard vs. Michigan is an exception). The non-ivy teams sometimes plan for an aggressive non-conference schedule.

Qpac 101
Harvard 122
Cornell 110
Colgate 130

Record 4-6-3

In terms of numbers, QPac, Harvard and Cornell are in the top 10 in offense and defense, but those stats are in large part against weak (ECAC) competition.

If Qpac and Harvard make it past the first game in the Bridgeport Regional, then we will be assured that at least one ECAC team will make it to the frozen 4. Colgate is hot. Qpac has been to the finals twice in recent 10+ years. "Third time's a charm?"

It looks like, of the three eastern leagues, AHA, ECAC and HE, there are only three teams left. Two ECAC (Cornell & Qpac) and One HE (BU). Of the Western teams, there is one NCHC (St Cloud) and four Big Ten (Michigan, Minnesota, Penn State and Ohio State). In the final four, there will be at least one eastern team (BU or Cornell) and at least one but as many as three Big Ten teams. Here is hoping that Cornell and Qpac come out smoking as they did in their first round. The X-Dutchmen on both teams are contributing nicely.
