Union College: 2022-2023

My worries were that Union Stats were not supporting the notion that they were going to be a football powerhouse this year. They won the first three-game by impressive scores, but the stats were not supporting a dominant team. Utica also entered the field 3-0. Union took a 24-7 halftime lead but fell asleep in the second half and lost 31-24. Ugh.

Evenly matched game. Fewer turnovers than I would have expected this time of year. RIT spent most of the time in the penalty box and seemed to skate most of the game a man down. (Who do I send the check to?) I wonder if the outcome would have been different given how tired RIT had to be playing so long, man down. It looks like we could not take advantage as none of our goals were powerplay goals. GWG in the last 90 seconds. The word is that we will be much more uptempo this year with lots more SOGs. Let's see how well we do today against Army.

A win and a tie. They are definitely playing with enthusiasm and playing an uptempo game. Got outshot by Army. It's too early to tell yet, but against AHC, they are holding their own. UConn will be a test.

Respectable losses against a very good UConn team. The second matchup featured our backup goalie and looked to have liberal substitution by both teams getting a look at lots of new faces. Took them to overtime. Equal SOGs. Some of the ECAC seems to be struggling a bit against high expectations. Clarkson dropped two that folks fully expected them to win. UNH picked to be in the bottom half of HE defeated two ECSAC teams that were picked to be in the top half of the ECAC. I still think Union can win 8 this year.

8 goals from the powerhouse program at RIT?!!!! Ong were QU and Harvard away from being Atlantic Hockey

Got two wins thus far out of our first 6. We are 2-1-1 against Atlantic Conference foes. Unfortunately, the rest of our non-conference is against the strength of HE. The goal is to win at least eight and not have the worse record in the past 20 years. They are definitely a bottom 4 team in the ECAC. They are pushing offense and hoping our excellent goalie can stem the tide. Where will the needed six more wins come from?

Badly outshot 20-5 in the first period. UMass scored three on the PP, and we took lots of penalties. It felt like a blowout. Murphy went the distance. Our new rookie defense needs some work. It's going to be a long season.

We gave up 4 PP goals. We have got to work on our man down. Again, we lost all of the last year's experienced defense, which was a strength. UMass scored 4 PP goals on only eight shots. In two games against UMass, we score 1 goal against their 14. We have given up 22 goals in the past three games. In the second game, UMass had 18 blocked shots to our 8. Poor Connor Murphy not getting any help. Our goal this year is to win at least eight and prevent this team from being the worse in the past two decades. Can we take one of the RPI games? Where can we find six more wins?

What was the name of that team playing RPI in Schenectady? They were wearing Dutchman Uniforms. I did not recognize them :) What a strange win. I will take it. That is win #3. The Dutchmen discovered you are allowed to "block shots," and the forwards started to play defense. Except for scoring, the stats show an even game. Impressed with the Dutchmen's cross-ice passing, forechecking and body checks along the boards. Bennett would have been proud. Looked like they were in late-season form. Some excellent shot screening and a textbook redirect. One of the scores came when an RPI defenseman took out his own goalie. Another Union goal looked like it might have been scored because an RPI defenseman poked the puck in front of his own empty net. I will take it any way I can get it. This sets up the "Mayor's Cup" for a big matchup. Interesting that the Troy game was a complete sellout but that there were many empty seats in Schenectady. I wonder what that means. Football lost to Hobart, so there goes any post-season play. The next stop is the North Country. We have lost or tied all of our road games 0-6-1 and won all our home games 3-0. Can we split in the North Country?

I know that it's still early in the season, and I have not pushed all the numbers, but my hunch is that ECAC teams are doing remarkably well at home and remarkably poorly on the road.

It was a VERY strange win, but that is not to take anything away from the Dutchmen. Wouldn't it be great if the Mayors Cup could pack the house?

Our first road win. Our first win against Clarkson since 2017. Is it more a reflection of our sudden improvement or Clarkson's early-season problems? Either way, I will take it. We were outshot 36 to 17. Onward. In football, we came up just short against Ithaca, which we have only defeated 4 TIMES SINCE 1985.

Except QPAC…..beating BC 4-0
North Dakota 6-2 and 5-5 tie that they should have won….on the road

Our two-game winning streak came to an end. In the second game against the Saints, we were down 4-1 before scoring late. We won the penalty count by having 7 to the Saints 1 until very late. Our penalty kill did ok. The Saints were coasting in that last period. This coming month I see a possible win against Dartmouth at home and next month a possible win against Princeton away.

Hi guys. Harvard fan here. Can anyone explain the apparent bad blood between Harvard and Union? There was a lot of chirping going on at last night's game and the rough stuff to me seemed highly unusual for a Union-Harvard hockey game. Thoughts?

No sure what it was from. Our new coach is from Clarkson, where more aggressive forechecking seems to be favored. We are about even in terms of penalties thus far this season:

Dutchmen
Penalties 65 Minutes 141
1 Major

Opponents
Penalties 60 Minutes 156
4 Major

That explains it. Casey Jones is Clarkson's coach, and he hates Harvard. So, it stands to reason that one of his assistants has similar feelings about the Crimson. Clarkson likes to take the body against Harvard, and I expect that will be the case with Union going forward. The chippy play should be shelved. Doesn't help either team.

Until our loss to Cornell, we had only lost one at home. I thought we had a chance. Complete blowout. We only blocked five shots, and Cornell was 2/2 on the powerplay. We have got to show up for these games. We need to have some pride. Down 6-1 at the end of 2, did we just give up?

Union is #1 in giving up goals in the ECAC and #4 in the country. Didn't QPac superstar Collin Graf play for Union? Snatching mediocracy from the Jaws of excellence, the Union College way. The good news is that we have already won 8 games, so we will not have the worse team record in the past twenty years unless they lose all the remaining games. Our winning football coach quit and is heading towards greener pastures.
