Union College: 2022-2023

The scholarships are being phased in at 4.5 per year for the next 4 years to get up to 18 total. Same being done for the womens team. They are setting up an endowment to pay for them in perpetuity so they are not a part of the annual athletic budget or taken from financial aid for the school as a whole. This seems like a good idea if they can get rich donors to make it work. 18 x 2 teams = approx $2M. From what I hear the schollies are already making a difference in recruiting, particularly on the womens side

I remain pretty skeptical they'll be able to raise that kind of money, at least based on their track record in the past for rink upgrades/alternatives, etc. More worrisome is what they do if they can't - cannibalize other athletics, the financial aid budget, or what? (Fewer administrators seems unlikely.). $20M is a ton of money in context - total spending on athletics was $8.5M in 2021.

To be technical, the ECAC did not sponsor hockey in 1954. Almost positive they began doing that no later than the very early 1960's. However, the ECAC'S founding date was 1938.

All that needs to be confirmed is whether RPI was an ECAC member between 1938 and the early 1960's. Unfortunately, will take a wild guess that anyone who was working at either RPI or the ECAC between 1938 and the very early 1960's is no longer "available" to verify that either way.

The ECAC's first season as a hockey league was 1961-62. See https://sports-chronicles.com/ecach/

The "barriers" that Union has to overcome to support a successful D1 hockey program are huge. This is why 2013-2014 was so unbelievable. It was truly remarkable. Many of these barriers are self-imposed, which is unfortunate. In the next decade, Union will wish that it had built on 2013/2014 rather than let that success fade. Even quantifying the benefits of that success could not "sell" greater investment in the program. Union will muddle along, maintaining its history of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

While I sometimes sound pessimistic about Union sports and the lack of college administrative leadership at my alma mater, I am mildly optimistic based on the pedigree of our new hockey and new football coaches. Only time will tell. We would be well served if Josh Hauge helped us build a program like Clarkson, where he coached for seven years. Looking at the recruiting class, I get a sense that this is the type of class he would have recruited if he were back at Clarkson, which is not a bad thing. Let's hope he gets the support he needs.

Brutal is the perfect word for it. And the logo is soooo much worse than the name. The Block U was perfect as it was!

Edit: I'm reading it now, and seeing the picture of the apparel with that atrocious lightning bolt U logo has me shaking in rage far more than the nickname.

I agree completely. Cannot begin to tell you how wrong this whole "effort" is..... Even money that Gatorade comes calling with a copyright infringement case for the lightning bolt image... Ha ha

As a Colgate alum who has suffered through this "mascot cancelling" I'd like to extend my sympathies to Union alums/fans for the recent pathetic attempt at virtue signaling...I guess the word "Dutchman" has offended some butterfly within the community...condolences...

Adding condolences to those already posted. Now waiting for the do-gooders to go after Huskies/Terriers/Eagles/Wolverines/Falcons/Nittany Lions/Tigers/Longhorns/Gators/Sharks, etc. ad nauseum to put a stop to the shameless denigration of defenseless animals.

Why do the soft liberals get their way when they have a hissy fit and stomp their little feet?
The Union Priuses

Can someone point to any source indicating this was a response to a PC campaign? The fact that they haven't moved to rename or replace the Dutchman's Shoes Trophy would indicate they have no problem with being associated with the Dutch heritage, but wanted something with a more modern name and graphical elements. I'm not a fan of the results, but I'm also not in their primary target audience.

Of course it's a woke PC campaign, genius. How else do you come up with this kind of absolute tripe nonsense??

Not changing the name of the DST gives them cover in the short term, but rest assured, it too will be changed out (and de-emphasized in the interim) at a convenient future moment when no one is looking.

This only makes sense if the "primary target audience" is three Gen Z kids named Elijah with noserings.

That's a pretty arrogant presentation for a response that discloses you know nothing about this decision and are making an assumption based on the latest political buzzword. You do present an interesting theory though, as colleges are very interested in appealing to the Gen Z world that represents their current and, for the next 5-10 years, future client pool. If "3 Elijahs with nose rings" represent that generation, then their opinions on this matter are undoubtedly far more important than yours.

If that's the case why aren't people going after Yale to change their name completely? Yale not only was a $lave owner but he also sold them, where's the outrage?

SHHHHHHH! Dont tell anyone that. The word might get out and ruin this whole "we REALLY care about righting past injustices" narrative. Not many Dutchmen around to complain to Union, but plenty of hand-wringing Libs around to whitewash (bad pun) history...... and keep the Yale name because "difficult to prove he was involved all these years later".

I actually heard a high ranking Yale alum say the Yale=slave trader story "has all the marks of a Russian Dis-information campaign". Oh wait, I am getting this mixed up with other wonderful tall tales. :-)

Good luck with the name change Union. Gatorade definitely coming for trademark infringement. Siena did this a long time ago with Indians. Shenendahowa did it by removing the mascot but keeping Plainsmen. Who is next?
