Re: UNH Wildcats 2015 Offseason - Future Planning ...or Just Rearranging the Deck Cha
Clearly PC's was a bit of a "one off" based largely on Gillies, and less on skaters. However, their recruiting the past year has been above average, so I see them as a perenial top 4 HE group that should be steady NCAA participants.
On recruiting competition, they are clearly a step above UNH now, and have beaten UNH to the defensemen who should have been in UNH's wheelhouse (NH's own Spencer Young, Newburyport's Ben Mirageas, and the kid UNH got, Ryczek.)
The losses of Ryczek and Farabee are disappointing, but a testament to the fact that their allegiance was to Borek, and that they had none to Coach Umile (though, Farabee never would have played for him). It would have been a nice opportunity for the Coach in waiting to make his mark by keeping them. But alas.
Right now New England seems picked clean for the 98s and 99s. The forwards are filled to 2018, so there is time to fill in the 2018 class with Canadians. There are lots of forwards to fill the 17/18 classes. (Merritt's Grannary and Ward seem interesting) There are fewer defensemen, so UNH better move quickly on those kids -- Blackburn's teammate Jake Morrison, and AJHL Ian Mitchell seem like good puck moving kids that would fit in well.
Bottom line, I still would have preferred a quick ripping off of the bandaid, with all of the losses and a clean start. Instead, it seems like we're continuing to peel it away (for the next three years), but nothing new in place to signify the new era.
At this point I'd be satisfied with being a one-off. And until PC wins another one, they should be too.
