UNH Wildcats 2015 Offseason - Future Planning ...or Just Rearranging the Deck Chairs?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015 Offseason - Future Planning ...or Just Rearranging the Deck Cha

At this point I'd be satisfied with being a one-off. And until PC wins another one, they should be too.

Clearly PC's was a bit of a "one off" based largely on Gillies, and less on skaters. However, their recruiting the past year has been above average, so I see them as a perenial top 4 HE group that should be steady NCAA participants.
On recruiting competition, they are clearly a step above UNH now, and have beaten UNH to the defensemen who should have been in UNH's wheelhouse (NH's own Spencer Young, Newburyport's Ben Mirageas, and the kid UNH got, Ryczek.)

The losses of Ryczek and Farabee are disappointing, but a testament to the fact that their allegiance was to Borek, and that they had none to Coach Umile (though, Farabee never would have played for him). It would have been a nice opportunity for the Coach in waiting to make his mark by keeping them. But alas.
Right now New England seems picked clean for the 98s and 99s. The forwards are filled to 2018, so there is time to fill in the 2018 class with Canadians. There are lots of forwards to fill the 17/18 classes. (Merritt's Grannary and Ward seem interesting) There are fewer defensemen, so UNH better move quickly on those kids -- Blackburn's teammate Jake Morrison, and AJHL Ian Mitchell seem like good puck moving kids that would fit in well.

Bottom line, I still would have preferred a quick ripping off of the bandaid, with all of the losses and a clean start. Instead, it seems like we're continuing to peel it away (for the next three years), but nothing new in place to signify the new era.

How much do you figure good ol' Luce paid those nice ISS folks to expand it to the Top 30? :D :p

Interestingly, if they cut the list off at the Top 20, neither UNH nor UConn would figure in it at all.

Actually, it's kinda said that Providence's NC "bump" barely got them onto this list. And whither Union and Yale?

Plus ca change ... plus c'est le meme chose ... :(

Recruits for this coming season were set in stone for some time already (letunov notwithstanding),
Wouldn't have expected PC to make inroads from April to now

Has Farabee committed to PC? Most likely they are in the hunt w Borek connection. It ain't over yet surely we'll get some decent blue liners!!

From twitter:

Word is BU, Providence and possibly BC are in mix for 2000 F Joel Farabee of Selects Academy/South Kent, a former UNH commit.

Bottom Line: One has to look out for oneself .... and therefore if the current coach cannot be a "king" there is now the opportunity to at least be a "kingmaker." One must do what is best for oneself ....

I would bet that a number of us have been in organizations where we experienced the atmosphere that exists in the above scenario .... kind of like having one foot on the wharf and one foot on the canoe.

Transitions can be tricky...but I think we need to see just what is in store with the next recruiting class. I think Mike Souza is going to do what he needs to do (along with Stewart) to build his incoming team. It's a formidable job but no different than any other recruiter I'd guess with hockey being so competitive. I know alot of people here scoff at the new video boards but I think they will make some impact (albeit small perhaps) on future recruiting. It was awesome to see the demo yesterday...We have good stuff in place but have to scramble with the recent losses. Can't wait to see what they come up with!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015 Offseason - Future Planning ...or Just Rearranging the Deck Cha

Media day has come and gone...pics are up of our 2015-2016 'Cats!!!!! Won't be long now....!!!!! :D:);)

Still haven't been able to find anything from media day. Usually there is an article in Foster's with pics and quotes.

Checked out the Jumbletron the other day. Pretty cool!

Normally there is stuff not sure why it's so late this year. Maybe the uncertainty in the roster. Glad we have C-H-C to keep us up to date with recruits. I'm thinking the Concord M will have something out. Read where they are going for the 'full fan' experience; like a kiss / dance cam..haha I just can't see that happening at the 'Whitt; maybe the students will embrace it we'll see! I hope we dont turn into a loud arena where you can't hear yourself think but so looking forward to the replays etc...

ps some of it (Media Day) was featured in Twitter through player pics/UNH Insider but really, not the amount I've seen in the past...yesterday's 'tron stuff was the most I've seen on UNH Hockey so far this season.

Diddo C-H-C!

I can see the students getting creative with the Jumbletron. Should be good for a few laughs. Looking forward the instant replay too. Thanks Ref!

I think that loud is exactly what we want; a return to Lively Snively. If we cannot score goals, at least we can be loud.

And, I for one am not scoffing at the new video boards. :D

Good point and maybe "scoffing" was too strong a word but I think it's going to make a huge diff in that arena. Wow..if we can get back to those days of which you speak that would be amazing...! Let's hope we score some goals :p AND be loud. WEIT!!

Aside from some of the more exciting times early in The Whitt's history, I don't think it's ever (consistently) measured up to Snively's atmosphere. Part of it is down to construction/design ... and the rest is down to how fans conduct themselves nowadays in live venues. Whatever atmosphere was carried over from Snively to The Whitt was effectively knee-capped when BS35+2 decided to start dictating how and when fans could cheer, what songs were acceptable on the playlist, etc. etc. etc. But I digress.

In general, sports fans have generally become more jaded (and rehearsed to a degree) due to the many other viewable options beginning with the cable TV age, and now just everywhere on a plethora of cutting edge devices. It used to be that live sports venues worried about losing gate receipts to radio (and then TV), but then they slowly realized that radio and TV acted to advertise the fun of a live experience, and gates were boosted by the addition of new fans and previously casual fans.

But somewhere in the last generation, we crossed the threshold where teams/schools decided that their fans wanted the live experience to be more like watching the game from the comfort of their recliner in their living room. And in doing so, they've gotten what they asked for, I suppose ... fans participate much more casually at live events these days, venues are (much) quieter during the flow of play, and way too much of the *atmosphere* is artificially generated or rehearsed. And I don't see if changing anytime soon.

Winning consistently and having an exciting program that challenges the best in the division will always help things along. But thinking back, I'm not sure The Whitt has genuinely been "hopping" like the old days since the original "White out the Whitt" against UMaine circa 1999. And of course, now the "White Out" - which back then was a one-time, fairly spontaneous event to signify what was a huge end of season series against the archrivals to decide the regular season - is just another rehearsed event that hasn't added anything to speak of to the overall atmosphere of the place.

So yeah, I do agree with Snively65 that I'd like to see the place LOUD again, and the rest I can live without.

Good stuff, Chuck. My job here is to keep you, Greg, and the other raconteurs on this thread fully engaged. Have a great weekend, all. Only a little more than three weeks now until the annoying and stinging Yellow Jackets visit the Whitt.

+1.

When I get to be dictator, I will outlaw the "sports marketing" profession and banish the practitioners thereof to the most desolate of desolate desert islands.

I don't disagree with anything here Chuck, but would only add that you are letting the fans off a bit too easy. In your narrative its as if the fans have no agency and are merely pawns. But the relationship between the administration/marketers/game day promotion yahoos and the spectators is actually a symbiotic one. Its not a one way street. Today many alleged "fans" are more interested in themselves rather than the action on the ice or field or court. Many are there to be seen rather than to be a spectator or a consumer of the game. Its all about them. And the banal arena productions we see everywhere are more than happy to feed into that want/need. "The Culture of Narcissism" may have been published the year that UNH won its hockey first championship (in Lively Snively BTW) but it resonates even more so today.

P.S. GREAT POINT on the origins of White Out the Whitt. The fusion of two top teams, the schedule, a rivalry, history (UNH learning to win a title)....even the weather. Yet within a year or two we were subjected to Thundersticks, which I'm sure were sponsored by somebody.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015 Offseason - Future Planning ...or Just Rearranging the Deck Cha

Good convo about the atmosphere at Lake 'Whitt. I have to say, tho, that what brought me into all of this was the 'Whitt that night for "white out".. I immediately knew this was something I wanted to have more of. The UNH 'Cat Pack Captains' are working as we speak to be ready for a new ice hockey season. The fan experience there I believe will change maybe, slowly but it's coming. Yeah, it would be fun to be Loud. We were in last years BU game (held our breath in the third ;) ) Anyhoo...bring it year 3 of fandom! I always enjoy my Whittamore Center Arena
