UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

So what is everyones thoughts about Notre Dame?
I rather agree with the TV color man, that Merrimack controlled the first half of the game and Notre Dame the second. I do not know whether it was as he said Merrimack was playing a bit casually or whether ND turned it up a notch. Merrimack absolutely carried play in OT, but ND scored an unusual goal.
My point is that UNH can not let up, must play their positions with discipline, and can not take stupid penalties, much, excluding the last point, as they did yesterday.
Notre Dame is an excellent team and is well-coached.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

absolute lock down effort by UNH, just a great job against an excellent team.:D They received a textbook lesson on how NOT to do it friday night:o and came out and played a terrific game. Red Hawks were bottled up the for just about the entire game, especially in the third. i'm thrilled for you guys, keep it up tonight. if it was earlier i'd be there rooting you guys on

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

So I wake up this morning after another great UNH Hockey win in the NCAA Regionals (see UNH v. NODAK) and I wonder. Should I wear the same clothes today? Should I shower and shave? Should I eat and drink the same thing as I did yesterday? Should I go up to my son's bar again only to find out that they don't have ESPNU(can you !@#$%^&* believe it?), only to have to drive back home quickly to see the opening drop of the puck, only to see an effn college lacrosse game!@#$%^&*. All that and it didn't matter because UNH took it to Miami. Nothing I did or hoped and prayed for (I really did say a prayer for UNH) mattered. The players and coaches and staff executed perfectly and took the hockey gods out of the equation. Bad bounces, controversial goals, bad reffing, waived off goals either didn't come into play or didn't matter. So I haved showered and shaved, heading off to church (yes I'll say another prayer) in a minute and planning my UNH Hockey viewing menu and watching the other regional games which I dvr'd.

I'm not going to jinx UNH by saying anything stupid but I know that no matter what I do today, it doesn't matter because I am confident that UNH is going to bring the same intensity and hard work to tonight's game and as a fan that's all I can ask for. GO UNH!!

Savor the good times whenever they come along. It helps get you through the long winters, losing streaks, lost recruits, and missed opportunities.

P.S. - Like this attitude (from unionleader.com):
"That's (losing in the Regional Final last season) pretty fresh in our minds," said senior center Phil DeSimone. "The first thing everyone said, seniors to sophomores, in the locker room was, 'Hey, we were in this position last year.' Tonight doesn't really mean anything unless we do it tomorrow."

And this from the concordmonitor.com:

Big game tonight....hate the Irish and really looking forward to a similiar effort to last night- any word on Thompsons wrist?

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Great game UNH! Took control of that game from mid-second period to the end.
More of the same against the Irish tonight, k?
Go Cats!

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Now I realize I'm not exactly a perfect person. Hell, no one is, and the world is much better off for it. But I, in particular, have ****ed some people off, shown up to games drunk off my ***, and generally acted like a total ****ing maniac. In some instances, I still do...but it's mostly because I've forgotten how to spell or mistimed when to do something, or even forgotten to show up at a game at all. I bet a lot of people didn't care whether I showed up or not, and today, I can live with that. At any rate, I'll admit I've had multiple moments of poor judgment, and I'm not proud of them, but I won't pretend like they didn't happen. I'm sorry about it, and I'm doing my best now to be a better fan. I realize that you're still a drunken ******* even if you say you love something, or someone.

Only one word can sum up this post: GUCKIAN!

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

I think the biggest thing UNH needs to do tonight is just play calm, strong, efficient hockey and bring a full 60 minute effort again. Yesterday vs Miami, UNH really played great team D and bottled up the neutral zone well and did not let Miele and Camper do their things. That will be important again. ND is a pretty big team and they skate well. If UNH does not lose defensive focus, I think things will fall into place for them.

They do need to have great focus, though. Last yr's Regional Final loss to RIT was just gutting. I think the guys just assumed that they would roll over them after the excellent win over Cornell. And, for me here in Detroit, it was even just a bit more heart-wrenching because we were thisclose to my team coming back to my hometown for the Frozen Four. Just a horrible feeling last year after that RIT game. I KNOW the seniors, especially, don't want to go through that pain again.

So, here's hoping we put in a full team effort tonight for 60 minutes and really deliver a performance we can be proud of. Then, even if we still lose to Notre Dame, we will will have nothing to hang our heads over. We will have given our best game... and that is all we, as fans/alums, can ask. Bring it home, boys... we are all behind you. You can do it.

Malts - you hit the nail on the head regarding yesterday's game - they played great team defense throughout the entire game. I don't think we have seen that for sometime. I hope they bring that same commitment tonight. I think they said on the ESPN broadcast about half way through the third that UNH had limited Miami to only 16 shots. Quite an accomplishment against a very good offensive team and when we have seen on many occasions UNH give up 35-40 shots. Hope they are focused and play with the same determination tonight.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

well im now rootin for you guys to win the whole thing, however if you do win the whole thing i may have to kill myself knowing what could have been. Best of luck to you tonight, youve got the better team go get it.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Great job yesterday. I DO feel bad for Merrimack - they definitely deserved to win tha game. On the other hand, as someone without a dog in the fight, the most important thing now to me is that the league continues on, and there can only be one Hockey East team advancing out of this regional anyway. So good luck UNH - play well and get to the Frozen Four!

i did realize the shot total at about 9 minutes left, i was incredulous. That is the 4th highest scoring team in college hockey and they didnt get a sniff in the third period

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

I am soooo pumped for this game! Personally I wanted another shot at Merrimack but now I'm just happy that the boys have a shot to go to St. Paul. Let's Go BLUE

Nailed it on the head, said half way through the 3rd period I can't remember when I say the Cats play that well in the neautral zone and play almost a trap, and it worked so well and let to many turn overs. If they play like that again ND should be in good shape, ND seemed to turn it over alot and hopefully the Cats can force alot more tonight
GO CATS!!!

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Nifty and Malts are on it.....after the win, a friend who knows just a bit about hockey, Burke simply said," there were more blue than red shirts all night".....sitting behind the goal, iot seemed that UNH took away Miami's north-south avenues with a sweeping east-west center zone that shut down their odd man advantages....that with strong individual man on man coverage into the zone and strong sticks....how many times were we beaten this year by teams (Merrimack) blocking shots with total commitment...I've told the story before that after we beat Cornell in 77 to meet BU for the ECAC championshiop, we were thinking about going west....in 79, Gouldie and Francis remembered that lost chance and won the ECAC....these seniors know that so far we've done nothing, so maybe we can play within ourselves another 60 minute and play some defensive hockey....Go you Cats!

Was also a little surprised to read this morning they blocked 20 shots, I knew they had a few but not 20!! I think I have seen entire season where they didn't have 20

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

I didn't see the game, but I understand the phrase from Belichick, "We executed better than they did." The previous posts tell a bit about it, and I'm psyched, too. I also remember there are only six or so D1 teams playing now, and UNH is one of them. Something to be proud of.
