Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

If BC and UNH both advance to the FF, would they meet each other in the semi-final game or only if they both reached the Championship?

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

A few observations from the blue line:

(1) It was a hoot watching Connor Hardowa play center. As others have noted, he did a very respectable job. On one of his first shifts, he creamed a Cornell guy over the boards just to my left and into the open space of the penalty box. I doubt that Gibber got a picture of it since the guy practically landed in his lap! (Gibber was in the penalty box working his photographic magic). At another juncture, during a stoppage of play in the offensive end, Hardowa huddled with Henrion and McCarey and I could imagine him saying "OK guys - what do I do now?" I love this big kid. Coach Umile and his staff made some smart adjustments to accommodate for his strengths and weaknesses. On a number of occasions, he sent Peter LeBlanc out to take the faceoff when Hardowa's line was in our defensive end. The forechecking scheme had Henrion and McCarey attacking the puck while Hardowa hung back in the neutral zone - taking advantage of his backchecking abilities.

(2) Got to respect the coaches for developing an effective strategy and sticking with it. Despite being down a goal at the end of the first period, UNH had outshot Cornell by a large margin - very different from the last two UVM games. They played the body effectively. They were winning many races to the loose puck and they were throwing and shooting the puck on Scrivens.

(3) Paul Thompson looked and played mean all night. Whenever he entered the end of the rink with the bulk of Cornell fans during a pause in the play, he would glare up into the stands as if to say "Go ahead, make my day." I saw him throw at least a half-a-dozen crushing checks throughout the game.

(4) Brett Kostolansky's long layoff and injury were all-to-evident on the first Cornell goal. I thought that Coach Umile might take him out in the second period and move Hardowa back to defense. But give Kostolansky a ton of credit - he stuck with it and knocked the rust off as the game progressed. More importantly, he did not seem to be hobbled by his damaged kneecap.

(5) Despite his diminutive size, Mike Borisenok quietly played a big game. His line was up against a line of Cornell lumberjacks and Borisenok bumped and wrestled them to a standoff.

(6) Although Cornell played a slow, defensive style, they could not be confused with UVM. Cornell was giving our defensemen plenty of room to move the puck out of our zone and, unlike UVM, they were not successful in clogging up the neutral zone.

(7) If not for Butler's career season, I think Brian Foster would have received more Hobey Baker attention. Needless to say, he outplayed one of the top Hobey Baker finalists - Scrivens.

(8) My 18-year-old daughter will never forget her trip to the Times Union Center. Yes, she'll remember the big UNH victory but more importantly, from her perspective, she found Jacob Micflikier in the crowd (with the assistance of Darci). He graciously agreed to autograph her UNH jersey - the one with #9 and MICFLIKIER on the back. Jacob's having a solid season with the Albany River Rats of the AHL and he was there to pull for his former team and mates.

I can't wait to load my teenage son and daughter into the car and make the 100 mile trip back out to Albany. RIT can not be taken lightly - they made Denver look rather oafish. Should be a fun, speed-skating event.

p.s. i'zonprize is a soothsayer!

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Back when my hormones were raging :), I acually spent a couple of weekends there visiting her. Thought it was a pretty strange campus and school at the time....she loved hawkey and we went to an RIT game once....they must have been in division 10 at the time....simply awful.

D-10 ... come on, give us a break. RIT was a top ranked DIII team almost every year.

And ... we have two NCAA National Championship Trophies in our case!:p
(Sure, they are DII and DIII; a nice DI version would round out the collection.)

In all seriousness. Great game by UNH last night. I'll admit I was pulling for an RIT-CU regional final to have a bit of local rivalry. But, I am very much looking forward to seeing how the Tigers skate with UNH tonight. (After all, we've already beaten Cornell once.)

Good luck to all tonight, hope it's another great one.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

I texted Darci at the end of the second period basically saying that UNH had to keep up the pressure on Cornell and to not let up and get defensive sitting on the one-goal lead. Wow.... I did not expect that third period at all.... I thought it would be all white knuckle time. Sooooooo glad Umile let the horses run and didn't rein anyone back in......

Boy.... one game from the Cats making it out here!! Very very excited and I know we have a big game vs an obviously good team (they must be to take down Denver, right?), but to have my team in the FF in my hometown...?? Pretty effing sweet that this might actually happen now.

Mike, really good observations and glad that your daughter got Flick's autograph for her jersey! Awesome!!!

Loved this part of your post.... I thought Thompson was dangerous nearly every time he stepped on the ice last night. You are right... he was really amped to play that game and was just looking the part all night. He could well have had a hat trick himself with some right bounces.

UNH MUST come ready to play tonight. This is the opportunity of a lifetime for these guys. Nothing should be left in the tank when the game is done later tonight. At the end, they should -- to a man -- be able to say "I did all I could" and, hopefully, that will be enough to have the Cats be at least one goal better than RIT.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Nice to see UNH come out and play with some urgency in the playoffs. Usually they come out timid and play not to lose instead of just taking it. From the begining you could tell they came to play.....even though they were down 1-0, the first period was so encouraging and nice to see like they really wanted to be there and wanted this......great job....hope they have the same attitude tonite.

I really think playing Cornell earlier in the year (even though they lost) helped UNH a lot in this game. There was nothing new that they had not seen before. They were very aware of what Cornell would try and do and they were very aware of who were the weapons on that team. Always a bit easier taking down the enemy you know.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

On a positive note, UVM shut out UNH for 7 periods. Its doubtful they will be shut out for anymore. And Foster payed outstanding......
With Foster's play, I think UNH stands a good chance of moving on, at least throught the first round. Just my $.02

???

Sorry to be the party pooper here, but on what logical basis can you possibly infer the latter from the former?

Especially if they draw Cornell (with a tender looking for his fourth consecutive full game shoutout)...

GPG.....they average x GPG, meaning that for every period that goes by where they don't score, statistically they become more and more likely to score. That is the logic I am using. No its not based on fact, just statistics......

No different then a goalie with 220+ minutes of shut out hockey (Scrivens), it becomes more and more likely that the next shot will be a goal.

Just saying. It doesn't translate to a win, but when you score at 3.32 GPG and then get shut out for two in a row, just makes another shut out more improbable.

Ahh, the law of averages......6-2.....lol

In all seriousness, great job by the Wildcats, congratulations on a big win against a hot team. With UVM out I will be rooting for UNH to take it all.

Oh and with RIT holding DU to 1 goal....I'm going with a 4-1 win for UNH....

Best of luck, and keep up the stellar play.......let's keep the NC in Hockey East.:D

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Where are all the posters that were saying coach Umile should be fired now? Last April Umile lost JVR, Dries, Bourque, White, and Ried and recovered and led his team to a first place finish in hockey east and an ncaa tournament appearance and still people were calling him a joke of a coach. NCAA watcher is the most fair weathered UNH poster on this board. You have suggested that the coaching staff be replaced more than anyone and u should just find another team to follow!

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Wow, that was impressive. A full 60 minutes, good coaching adjustments/gameplan, no major letdown at the first sign of adversity (when Cornell, despite being outplayed, took the lead) . . . huh, was that really UNH out there? ;) Seriously, though, that was the best tournament game (HE or NCAA) I've seen them play since the regional final vs. BU in 2003. Great job. We'll see what happens tonight.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

GO BLUE:)

Nice nice win against a very good Cornell team. That was a championship caliber performance from top to bottom.

Keep it going. I want to look forward to another FF appearance.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Congrats, UNH fans on the win. It was pretty much the opposite of what we saw in Durham in January with your boys skating circles around ours all night, hemming us in our zone for long stretches, and scoring seemingly at will on Scrivens.

It also didn't help that Scrivens tends to play either an excellent game or an awful one...never just okay. Last night was one of those awful games. Would it have been a different result if he stopped a few of the multiple goals that zipped right over his glove? Probably not, given the the mediocre play from the rest of our team. But as a Cornell fan it was very disheartening to watch our team go down without a fight, playing (especially after the two UNH goals in 25 seconds) as if they just wanted to go home, and not like it was a NCAA tournament game.

Although I'll probably be pulling for RIT tonight, good luck the rest of the way!

Well, well said dover. That was a TEAM last night. Some excellent individual talent yes but what an incredible team effort. D Men picking each other up, communicating, filling the gaps and passing lanes and the best forecheck of the year. Thompson was jacked obviously last night and created a lot of opportunities for 'mates with his effort. What a joy to watch last night in person. My daughters' first NCAA game. Thanks UNH and thanks Coach Umile and staff!!! All the naysayers have a seat. This team was well prepared and that my friends is coaching and fine coaching at that. Let's roll this train to the Motor City!!

Once you make it to the Mass Pike, it's really a breeze getting to Albany. Not a lot of traffic and a scenic ride through the Berkshires is nice. The Time Union Center is easy to get to as well. Plenty of parking. Would love to see even more UNH fans tonight.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

It's a beautiful day, many more fans should make the drive. Anyone know if there is reception location for UNH fans or a gathering establishment of choice? Don't know much 'bout Albany.

we certainly do need more support , my guess there will be three times as much tonight , not that yesterdays attendance was any consolation
