Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition
A few observations from the blue line:
(1) It was a hoot watching Connor Hardowa play center. As others have noted, he did a very respectable job. On one of his first shifts, he creamed a Cornell guy over the boards just to my left and into the open space of the penalty box. I doubt that Gibber got a picture of it since the guy practically landed in his lap! (Gibber was in the penalty box working his photographic magic). At another juncture, during a stoppage of play in the offensive end, Hardowa huddled with Henrion and McCarey and I could imagine him saying "OK guys - what do I do now?" I love this big kid. Coach Umile and his staff made some smart adjustments to accommodate for his strengths and weaknesses. On a number of occasions, he sent Peter LeBlanc out to take the faceoff when Hardowa's line was in our defensive end. The forechecking scheme had Henrion and McCarey attacking the puck while Hardowa hung back in the neutral zone - taking advantage of his backchecking abilities.
(2) Got to respect the coaches for developing an effective strategy and sticking with it. Despite being down a goal at the end of the first period, UNH had outshot Cornell by a large margin - very different from the last two UVM games. They played the body effectively. They were winning many races to the loose puck and they were throwing and shooting the puck on Scrivens.
(3) Paul Thompson looked and played mean all night. Whenever he entered the end of the rink with the bulk of Cornell fans during a pause in the play, he would glare up into the stands as if to say "Go ahead, make my day." I saw him throw at least a half-a-dozen crushing checks throughout the game.
(4) Brett Kostolansky's long layoff and injury were all-to-evident on the first Cornell goal. I thought that Coach Umile might take him out in the second period and move Hardowa back to defense. But give Kostolansky a ton of credit - he stuck with it and knocked the rust off as the game progressed. More importantly, he did not seem to be hobbled by his damaged kneecap.
(5) Despite his diminutive size, Mike Borisenok quietly played a big game. His line was up against a line of Cornell lumberjacks and Borisenok bumped and wrestled them to a standoff.
(6) Although Cornell played a slow, defensive style, they could not be confused with UVM. Cornell was giving our defensemen plenty of room to move the puck out of our zone and, unlike UVM, they were not successful in clogging up the neutral zone.
(7) If not for Butler's career season, I think Brian Foster would have received more Hobey Baker attention. Needless to say, he outplayed one of the top Hobey Baker finalists - Scrivens.
(8) My 18-year-old daughter will never forget her trip to the Times Union Center. Yes, she'll remember the big UNH victory but more importantly, from her perspective, she found Jacob Micflikier in the crowd (with the assistance of Darci). He graciously agreed to autograph her UNH jersey - the one with #9 and MICFLIKIER on the back. Jacob's having a solid season with the Albany River Rats of the AHL and he was there to pull for his former team and mates.
I can't wait to load my teenage son and daughter into the car and make the 100 mile trip back out to Albany. RIT can not be taken lightly - they made Denver look rather oafish. Should be a fun, speed-skating event.
p.s. i'zonprize is a soothsayer!
