Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

CBG- Gotta like the draw of the Big Red! UNH has good tourney results historicaly against them.. and I for one like that they beat UNH @ UNH, gives UNH hopefully a little someting extra to get them going.. This is a GREAT draw for the WILDCATS!

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

In my mind every Hockey East team, BC included, can be beaten.

They have all shown a lack of defense at times. They have all had periods when they had no ability to score... Either of these faults can trip up any of these teams...BC, UNH and Vermont.

Still, maybe one, two or all three of them can put solid efforts together to get to the Frozen Four. Best of luck to UNH and Vermont.

As for BC...may they lose in the first round!

Maybe Barry Melrose was right to completely ignore their accomplishments.

;)
Right to ignore their accomplishments? i'm glad you enjoyed though it was clear that he was not prepared for the broadcast which is insulting to us, the viewers.........North Dakota had to win their Tourney to get in??, good job Barry, go have another drink:)

I'm not a big fan of using past results to look at this year's draw, particularly results from 7-8 years back (it's the same reasonI wouldn't want to face SCSU - sure, they've never won an NCAA game, but that's not the same as they never will win; eventually they will). Same coaches, though, so maybe that helps a little.

As someone else noted, hopefully the staff is watching the film of the January game, as well as Cornell in the ECAC's.

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

And for Cats fans who can't make the trip out to Albany, does anyone want to meet at a local spot to watch the game on ESPN? I think it's on ESPNU. I was thinking about The Page in Portsmouth. Any thoughts?

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

good question , driving up from RI, will not miss this one .

The Pepsi Center, or whatever they call it now, holds around 14,000. My guess is that Cornell will have 3-4,000 people there, RIT 2-3,000 tops, Denver 500 and UNH, who knows. Add in the Capital District fans that will leave around 5,000 available seats. We should be able to find ourselves together, especially since there will be some vacated seats after the first game ends.

UNH has played in Albany three times. They split in 1994, beating RPI, losing to Harvard, swept in 1998, coming from behind to beat Wisconsin, then beating BU on Mowers goal, then losing 1-0 to Michigan State in 2006 with one of the most lackluster efforts I've ever seen in the post-season.

Good omen moment. I got a call from my daughter, who lives in Ithaca, after the selection show. She informed me that she is going to be in Albany to root on the Wildcats. The last time she saw UNH in Albany was in '98. We'll see if it works.

i would guess you will see 2000 fans , maybe less but , got to think there are hoards of people wanting to catch one last glimpse of butler and unh . trying to think in years back the numbers , i would say 1500 or so .

I had just finished commenting to my wife that Barry knows nothing about college hockey, when he made the asinine comment about ND. I figure it's a good omen that he's picking Cornell :D

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

The 'Cats should be well rested, and I am sure that there is a revenge factor in their heads after they got throttled by the Big Red back in January at the Whitt. That being said....I really don't know if this team really has the over-achieving factor to overcome Cornell's defense and their stalwart goalie.

Definitely like this matchup better than the UNH/Nodak matchup in Worcester that was predicted last night in the Bracketology article. :p

Would be nice to have some surprise success like in '98. We're due. ;)

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Well, if we're on the subject of omens, in 1998 UNH played in Albany after collapsing down the stretch and being eliminated at home in the HE quarters . . .

So there are similarities.

I'm just guessing this won't be a 10-9 double overtime (!) win like the one we caught at The Gahden vs. the Big Red decades ago (thankyou, Bobby Gould).

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Since Cornell beat UNH 5-2 on January 3rd, they lost the following regular season games:
3-1 to North Dakota
5-3 to Princeton
2-1 to Yale
5-4 to Dartmouth

Over this same time period, UNH lost the following regular season games:
3-2 to Merrimack
3-2 and 6-3 to Maine
3-2 to BC

Re: UNH Wildcats - '10 Playoff Edition

Looking at the numbers, I've become even less hopeful for this weekend - we all know about Scrivens and Cheverie backstopping Cornell and Denver, but then you see that RIT's goalie is also in the top ten nationally in GAA, Sv% and shutouts (#2, tied with Cheverie with 6, 1 behind Scrivens). Foster's name only even shows up on that page in the minutes played category, where he's third.

Scoring defense:

1 Cornell 33 61 1.85
3 RIT 38 79 2.08
10 Denver 40 97 2.42
34 New Hampshire 37 114 3.08

Scoring Offense:
5 RIT 38 136 3.58
11 New Hampshire 37 123 3.32
12 Denver 40 132 3.30
19 Cornell 33 105 3.18

(Granted, RIT's in the AHA, but that's still pretty impressive.)

Disregarding DU/RIT, as they don't matter if UNH doesn't win Friday, we're looking at a Cornell team boasting the best goalie in the country, with the best defense in the country, and an offense that scores just slightly less than UNH.

I'm not feeling very good about this game. :(

come on if unh played in ECAC there goals for would be like 4.6 , granted we did lose to cornell in january. its going to be a 3 -2 game .

Great/useful data.

And those are pretty much my own feelings in a nutshell (see post #378 from last night):

Oh joy. Our team --with back-to-back shutouts -- draws a Cornell goalie with three consecutive shutouts.

So we get to face Ithaca's most recent incarnation of Kenny Dryden. Be still my heart. :p
