Throughout June, several UNH Recruits participated in the Tryout Camps of the United States Hockey League team that drafted them. Tomorrow, each USHL team will submit a list of the players that have made either the active roster or affiliated list, to the league office. The active rosters will include 25 players who are protected (i.e., the team retains the players' USHL rights) and the affiliated list includes 14 additional players (also protected). Some USHL teams have already made these list available to the public, some will release them tomorrow, and some don't release the information. Here is the current status of the UNH Recruits who were drafted by a USHL team:
Muskegon Lumberjacks
Casey Thrush - Made the active roster.
Michael McNicholas - Is on the affiliate list.
Sioux City Musketeers
Maxim Gaudreault - Made the tryout "all-star" team (final 42 players).
Andrew Poturalski - Also made the all-star team.
Tri-City Storm
Dylan Maller - Made the tryout "all-star" team.
Mike Vecchione - Also made the all-star team.
Dubuque Fighting Saints
Kyle Smith - Is not on the active roster or affiliate list ;participation in tryout camp not confirmed.
Waterloo Blackhawks
Jamie Hill - Roster not (yet) available; participation in tryout camp not confirmed.
Matias Cleland - Roster not available; participation in camp not confirmed.
Indiana Ice
Tyler Kelleher - Roster not (yet) available; participation in tryout camp not confirmed.
US NTDP U-17 Team
Tyler Kelleher - Participated in tryout camp. Information on whether he was offered a position not available.
Omaha Lancers
Brett Pesce - Roster not (yet) available; participation in tryout camp not confirmed.

All players who make the active roster or affiliate list are invited to the USHL team's training camp in early September. After the USHL Fall Classic, Sept 21-24, each team must reduce their active roster to 23 players.

The NHL Central Scouting Service (CSS) released it's 2012 Players to Watch List for North American (http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=69970) and International players (http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=69972).
These lists represent CSS's preliminary identification of players who are projected to have potential for being drafted in the 2012 Entry Draft next June. Players are rated according to the following system:
"A" - considered a must see player, identified as a potential First or Second round selection in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft.
"B" - a player to note if you are in the area, a potential selection in the mid rounds Third to Fifth Round Draft selection in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft
"C" - a player Central Scouting is tracking, a potential late round selection in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft: we are not recommending that the team scouts go out of their way to get a viewing on these players.

Two UNH recruits, who are projected to enroll in the Fall of 2013, have been rated as "B" players:

question CHC.Is UNH going after the Northeastern decommit??? i know they went hard after the kid .do they even have the money or room? that would be an impressive pickup this late into the summer...thanks

I have no firm information on Kovacs' plans/interests. From what I've read online (e.g., http://www.grossepointenews.com/Art...vacs-preps-for-college-in-junior-hockey.html_; also, the "canada1" post on the NU thread) Justin Kovacs sounds like a pure, playmaking center - that is, focuses on assists, faceoffs, and mucking it up with opposing defensemen on the boards. No wonder UNH and several other schools were interested in him.

UNH only lost one frontline center - Phil DeSimone - to graduation. Between the upperclass, returning centers (Mike Borisenok, Jeff Silengo, Austin Block) and incoming freshman (announced so far), UNH has a bit of a glut of centers. Grayson Downing, Dan Correale, and Matt Willows, all have experience playing center. These freshmen also have strong goal scoring numbers. In addition, Kyle Smith, a center for the Junior Bruins was originally scheduled to enroll this fall but was recently deferred another year. It's possible that UNH offered a slot to Matt Willows after they learned that Kovacs had committed to NU (the timing of the commitment dates line up).

If Kovacs really wants to come to UNH this fall and UNH really wants him (both unknowns), then they will need to act fast since admission to fall classes needs to be wrapped up in August. I suppose UNH could ask one of the announced recruits to defer a year to make room for Kovacs but that would be unusual this late in the game. In any event, it sounded like Kovacs is a midwest guy who is interested in staying in the midwest.

Thanks to Andrew Smith, who writes for and maintains the "Indianapolis Hockey" blog (http://indyhockey.blogspot.com/2011/07/thanks.html), for confirming that 2014 Recruit Tyler Kelleher participated in the Indianapolis Ices' Tryout Camp. The Ice has not yet announced which players were selected for the active roster and affiliate list. Look to indyhockey.blogspot.com to get the scoop.

The 16-year-old Kelleher was also invited to try out for the USA NTDP Under-17 Team in March (http://www.westerncollegehockeyblog.com/2011/3/8/2039172/2011-ntdp-final-40-camp-roster). So far, 9 of the 13 forwards who will be on the team have been announced on the Heisenberg 2012 list. There's an unconfirmed rumor that Tyler was offered a position on the U-17 Team. If he plays for either the Indiana Ice or USA U-17 Team next season, it will be a big step up from his freshman season at Deerfield Academy.

Any truth to the rumors that fellow Northeastern recruit John Gaudreau is seeking a release from his commitment. I have read a few articles saying that he and his family are a bit upset with Cronin leaving, and may be looking for another avenue that doesn't have Northeastern in his future. He fits that small/shifty, fast player with scoring touch that Umile loves. Any thoughts on his potential release and maybe heading to Durham, where a few other players from NJ and Team Comcast have ended up?

He has indicated to the interim coach (possibly future Head coach) that he will attending orientation this month and will be at NU in September.

I wonder if Vinny Saponari (Gaudreau's linemate on the Dubuque Fighting Saints) helped persuade Gaudreau to not renege on his commitment to NU? If so, it speaks well of Saponari's leadership skills.

Kovacs and another player maybe recruited if they don't commit this weekend, possible big change in this years class.

2013 Recruits Michael McNicholas and Brett Pesce are participating in USA Hockey's Select 17 Player Development Camp (http://wwa.usahockey.com/Template_Usahockey.aspx?NAV=PL_01_08&ID=4466).
After the first 2 games, forward McNicholas is tied for second in scoring with a goal and four assists. Pesce is tied for first among defensemen with a goal and two assists (http://www.usahockey.com/Season/TopScorers.aspx?eventid=2704&agedivisionid=1943&usahockeytype=ICE).
Andrew Poturalski is also participating and has yet to score.

Goalie Curtis Frye from Northwood, NH made the US NTDP Under-17 Team (http://phillipian.net/articles/2011/05/26/frye-13-named-us-national-hockey-team). He also recently participated in the Warren Strelow National Team Goaltending Camp. Coach Lassonde is an instructor at the camp (http://www.usahockey.com/usahgoalies/default.aspx?id=243636).
First Brian Foster (Pembroke), then Casey DeSmith (Rochester); - next up, Curtis Frye (Northwood)?

When "The UNH Men's Hockey Blog" (http://unhhockeyblog.blogspot.com/) went dormant in late 2009, there was no longer a single internet site for UNH fans to go to find out factual information about UNH recruits. That was a real loss - many Division 1 hockey programs have active and informative hockey blogs. I've tried to fill the void for those fans who are interested in (1) the careers of players who have committed to play hockey at UNH, (2) young, uncommitted players who may be on UNH's radar, and (3) the strategy and performance of UNH's coaches in the recruiting arena. Nowadays, there are countless websites and blogs which provide up to the minute facts on the careers of junior hockey players. I have tried to distill and organize the information that pertains to UNH recruits. I'd be happy to relinquish this task back to the unhmen'shockeyblogger guy or anyone else who would like to reinvent a UNH hockey blog. In the meantime, this thread will continue to provide that type of information.
