2012 Recruit Mike Vecchione has been ranked #209 among North American skaters on the NHL Central Scouting Service 2011 Entry Draft Final Rankings. He is one of the few players on the CSS Final Rankings who is under 5'10".

There are also 140 skaters on the Final Rankings for European players for an overall total of 350 ranked players. Given that only 210 prospects will be drafted in the June 2011 Entry Draft, it is unlikely that Mike Vecchione will be selected by an NHL team. However, it is still an honor to earn a spot on the list - Congratulations to Mike Vecchione and his family.

And the best part about it is that he is over 5'10"

He is better off not getting drafted at that level. Kids though do like it

According to the statistics provided in the CSS Final Rankings, Mike Vecchione had the third highest points per game among the 30 high school players on the list - 70 points in 20 games for 3.5 PPG. Looks like they got the scoring stats right but came up short (so to speak) on his height.

Casey DeSmith and the Indiana Ice eliminated Jamie Hill and the Waterloo Black Hawks from the USHL Playoffs. DeSmith faced 30 SOG and made 27 saves for his second playoff win in two nights. Hill continued his regular season pattern of taking an excessive number of penalties, in this case, 4 penalties for 8 minutes. In the regular season, Hill had 119 penalty minutes in 58 games. Indiana advances to the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Series against the Green Bay Gamblers - a best-of-five series.

Casey Thrush and the Muskegon Lumberjacks defeated Team USA 2-0 in Game 1 of their playoff series. Thrush scored his first playoff goal in the USHL.

Tyler Kelleher goes 71st to Indiana in the USHL Futures Draft today. Looks like UNH has created quite a pipeline with Indiana in recent years (Goumas, Agosta, DeSmith).

Looks like 2014 Recruit Tyler Kelleher (DOB 1/2/95) has two and possibly three choices on where to play next season:

(1) Deerfield Academy - As a freshman this season, Kelleher had 11 goals and 15 assists in 24 regular season games. Deerfield had a record of 9-12-4 and did not make the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association Playoffs.
Academically, Deerfield Academy is an elite private school with approximately 600 students (http://www.deerfield.edu/about/262/Fast_Facts). Kelleher's hometown of Longmeadow, MA is about 1/2 hour from Deerfield, MA.

(2) Indiana Ice of the USHL - Indiana drafted Kelleher in the 5th Round of the USHL Future Draft (http://www.indianaice.com/news.php?id=1249). The current roster of the Indiana Ice includes one player born in 1995 and three born in 1994. The Ice play their home games in the Pepsi Coliseum - an 8,000 seat arena in downtown Indianapolis. Players attend local high schools.

(3) USA Hockey Under-17 National Training Development Program - In March, Kelleher was one of 40 players, born in 1995, to participate in the NTDP Evaluation Camp (http://usahockey.cachefly.net/NTDP/2011CampRoster.pdf). The final roster for the Under-17 Team USA squad will be announced in July. The squad, which will include 13 forwards, 8 defensemen, and 2 goalies, plays in the Eastern Conference of the USHL. According to the Heisenberg List (http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AoPLTHefMmmTdEw4QWgxUjdKLTB0MEk3VTFLdlBOaHc&gid=4), five forwards have been offered a slot on the team and have committed to play. That leaves 8 openings for forwards. There has been no formal announcement on whether Tyler Kelleher has been offered one of these openings.

Team USA plays their home games at the Ice Cube in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Players attend a local public high school. This is what Brendan Silk, a BC recruit who used to attend Austin Prep School in Reading, MA., had to say about the transition from a private school to Pioneer High School, a public school in Ann Arbor:

Casey DeSmith and the Indiana Ice got shelled by Green Bay in Game 1 of their Quarterfinal Series. With less than 2 minutes remaining in the second period, DeSmith had already made 26 saves. The bad news is he also allowed 5 goals. By that juncture, the Ice had only managed 6 shots on goal. DeSmith was pulled and replaced by Jon Gillies. The final score was 5-1. Game 2 is on Friday.

Casey Thrush and the Muskegon Lumberjacks were soundly defeated by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 4-1 in Game 1 of their playoff series. Thrush did not figure in the Lumberjacks' goal.

Just noticed that Kyle Smith is listed as a 2012 recruit on Heisenberg's site.
If they do keep him back, hopefully he plays in the USHL, it doesn't appear he needs much more time in the EJ imo.

That's a good pick up & extremely interesting.

Is there another forward on the way in??

My thought is, is that UNH would NEED Smith- he did very well over the last two seasons in Boston & could be a good fit for the trio including Downing & Willows. Hill has not exactly lit it up in the USHL although appears to be an aggressive player not afraid of getting dirty. Camper, imo, still has to be a huge question mark for ice time given his concussion issues. Correale, could be the player coming in as he's a '91- but he still shows as well as a 2012 recruit.

I like the move to push Smith back because he would have been unlikely to get any playing time at center this year, and he's a true playmaking center. My guess is Borisenok, Block, Downing and Silengo are the centers to start the year, but Willows is also a center and Pavelski and Sorkin could see time in the middle as well. There are so many variables, though, that make that stuff hard to predict at this time.
One name who is definitely out there and I hope is the reason Smith pushed back is Vinny Saponari. He was recently quoted as saying he's definitely coming back to college this fall and has been talking to Hockey East schools along with one or two in the CCHA. It appears he's grown up a lot since his BU dismissal, as he's played a leadership role on the expansion Dubuque team in the USHL this year and produced a lot of points. Acquiring his services for two years could go a long way toward shoring up UNH's goal-scoring, which appears to be the weakness on next year's team.

Interesting...here's what USHR reported last December (this archive article is available free):

"Boston College admissions has denied the transfer application of former BU forward Vinny Saponari. Saponari, booted from the Boston University hockey team after his sophomore season, would have entered BC as a junior in the fall of ’11...
'He’s very disappointed,” said Dubuque coach Jim Montgomery. “He had a long face in my office. It’s too bad, because he’s been playing great. I think he’s the most dominant player in the league now. He’s ready to play in the AHL and develop into a professional player'...
Montgomery reports that the coaching staff at BC 'was not happy' with the thumbs-down. As for the future, Montgomery says his assistant captain 'is keeping his options open' and will start talking to schools again in February. 'But, he’s a little down on schools right now.' "

If Saponari is interested in returning to play college hockey, UNH may now be able to accommodate his academic application. Today is a noteworthy day for UNH athletics - the following sanction, imposed after the e-mailing violation, ends today:

Perhaps the UNH Admissions Office will be more flexible with an application from Saponari than they were with Matt White or Cam Reid.

Casey Thrush and the Muskegon Lumberjacks stay alive in their playoff series beating Cedar Rapids 5-1. Muskegon trails 2 games to 1.

When the day began, Casey Thrush was the only UNH recruit still playing hockey. Although Thrush scored a goal in tonight's game, the Muskegon Lumberjacks were eliminated from the playoffs by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders - final score 7-3.

In his first season in the United States Hockey League, 18-year-old Casey Thrush scored 10 goals and 18 assists in 59 regular season games and 2 goals in 6 playoff games. This was also the first season for the Muskegon Lumberjacks, an expansion team.
