UNH Men’s Hockey 22-23: the start of something new, or more of the same?

I am going to break this post into three parts, because I just can’t type on my iPad without it doing crazy things.
1 Team:
A group of hardworking, dedicated individuals who rarely gave up. Never good enough to dominate but often found the way to respectability and a win.
we should lose 6 player who contributed 34 points. 34 points is what many remember as a decent forward in years past. So what is there for next year?
could be fun if we get growth from our current group and Conmy, Stedem and Fitzgerald are as advertised. And remember Cafarelli and Winters should return. I can imagine 4 good lines and improvement as the year progresses. Predict17 more goals than this year.
Problem is as the bottom team (yes we lost to VT 3 times) is that HE has changed so very much and that has been and will continue to be our problem. See part 2 HE, the Changing Landscape.

Not blaming y'all, I "know" you too well :-), but to diverge slightly from the broken record (old timer LP reference) fire everyone now theme of this thread: who should be more more surprised and disappointed this morning: UNH or UMO fans?

I'd say UMO fans but still ... :-)

2 Changing HE Landscape
in a 10/15 year period remembered by many as the Golden Era, HE was dominated by 4 teams and they maintained control of everything.BC, BU, UM and UNH got nearly all the top recruits, ruled HE and eastern hockey in general with few exceptions.
Bump ahead to the past 8-10 years and a clear and definite shift occurred. EvenBC and BU have stumbled a few times (but not for long) and UM and UNH have eased to be relevant.
Back in the Golden Era, what top recruit wanted to go to MC, UML, UMA, NE or even PC ? Very few and remember there was no VT or UConn.so as a top 4 school we were getting lots of top recruits. As we all aware, that honor faded and is now long gone.
Looking to 23/24 - UM will be much better and VT is trending up for sure. UMA andPC had a very rough year and in many ways looked like us on any given night. Hard to believe that they will stay down but who knows? Points is, it will be harder than ever to move up.

3 Coaching
The 4 primary roles of a coach are:
1 Develop good student athletes
2 Recruit ever better replacements
3 Develop each student so that they continue to grow and improve.
4 Control game plans and make necessary in game changes

We can give a great grade on number 1.
Recruiting an elite goal scorer each year needs improvement. Not disparaging Liam or Cy
We continue to get good dedicated kids but not all appear to develop as projected - offensively or defensively.
And in my opinion we appear to be easy to coach against and struggle to adjust in game or between periods. I feel we are better than we play.
it is hard to imagine 17-19 year olds picking MC and other emerging teams over us! But that is not only reality it is fact.
To move forward (up) we need a change.

Last 5 years in the Pairwise. Average ranking 37.4. Average in the bottom 40% of the Pairwise. Not once on the top half of the Pairwise in those 5 years. That is not a team in a rebuild mode it’s a team a death spiral. The players, fans and university deserve better. In 10 season they went from finishing 7th in the pairwise to 50th this season

How about the “fire” that Scotty Borek lit a Merrimack? Why cannot we get assistant/head coaches like dat?

That is going to be one hot game on Saturday v BC...on that small surface, most likely a sell out. Almost tempted to go but my former school is in the NH state championship and they are playing at SNHU so might catch that instead.

Would like to see MC advance..good for Scott (not Scotty) Borek. IF I have this right he
certainly worked the portal to his advantage and its paying off. As it was discussed on the MC board BC is playing pretty well- prob the best game of the 4.

(Hey Snives watching Warren Foegele tonight v the B's-he's had some good moments so far! Wild to think he was on that 2015 team ('Cats) is doing pretty well for himself with a 3 year 8.2 mil contract...not happy they beat our Bruins tho!)

Ps On another totally unrelated note, I see Dartmouth just extended Reid Cashman's contract as per Twitter

Appreciate the posts with stats in them...they are very interesting and they do tell a tale. I think there needs to be an assessment of the season by the UL (or whomever wants to write it) and I wonder if that will happen; just some kind of 'closure' of sorts? Not too much to ask?

Speaking of these stats, wonder if those 'in charge' would even look at
these or attempt to find them? Don't want to sell anyone short in Athletics but these are things that make you go hmmmmm...

... but to diverge slightly from the broken record (old timer LP reference) fire everyone now theme of this thread: who should be more more surprised and disappointed this morning: UNH or UMO fans?

Easy question with two answers, actually ... our UMaine-iac friends will be surprised their team lost, and disappointed they did not at least get a chance to play against the 3 seed with a trip to the HE Semis on the line. They lost to the hands-down worst team in the league - remember, UVM may have beaten UNH 3 in a row this season, but they still finished comfortably last - and they will have thought a road game against the three seed would have been great entertainment. Remember, when things are going good, no one travels like UNH and UMaine fans. Whereas UNH fans cannot be surprised to have lost to Providence, and there's a fair amount of us who aren't too disappointed, since a win or two (while fun) would have been further fodder for the "Keep MS7 & extend him" camp (that would be Mrs. MS7 and the Stewart and Guiliano families).

But once the sting wears off in the Downeast, our UMaine-iac pals get to look back at this season with honest-to-goodness optimism, as they've clearly bottomed out and are now heading back in the right direction (hint to AD Rich - that would mean UP the standings), with a coach who is following suit with his prior recruiting successes, and building back the Black Bears to past glories. In fact, Coach Barr is Making UMaine Great Again (choke on that, rufus you commie bast!d). He may never quite reach the heights of Walshy, but that's only because nothing is better than the first time. And Barr will use last night's loss as rocket fuel for next year's team to motivate them any time they might get complacent, and I would be willing to bet UMaine is one of the four teams that get to Boston this time next year. Sadly, UNH is unlikely to be there to meet them ... and the longer UNH Admin dawdles with pulling the plug on the Great Umile Experiment, the longer it will be before we can again see UNH and UMaine fans, wall to wall, packing out the Garden like the old days.

This time, two years ago, our departed pal Blue Skies knew that UMaine was likely to move on from Red Gendron, whose contract was running out at the end of that season. He was a lame duck before he was a dead duck (pardon the pun), and if Blue Skies had the cojones and vision to axe Souza and hire Barr right then and there, that could have been us with the exciting progress and knocking on the door of playing in the real important games. It wasn't (and isn't). Instead, to compound the indignity, the putz extended Souza.

I expect more disappointing inactivity from AD Rich this Spring. She should have been waiting for the bus back from Providence to return last night, with instructions for MS7 to report back to her office the following morning (today) and discuss terms of his early severance, pack up his stuff, and say goodbye to his guys one last time. Then brought in Guiliano, thank him for his services, and show him the door too. Had Stewart in right after, and name him interim coach, making no promises other than a chance to interview with his new boss for his old job. Stew can be tasked with keeping the volunteer goalie coach apprised on the process that follows. Let him also continue to liaise with next season's recruits, with the idea that he should be back (let's say 70-30 in favor of at least a "bridge year") to see if the new guy finds value in keeping Stewart longer. And bring on the national search.

'Watcher, you good with that? Oh, and one more thing. At least one of us on here (I'll volunteer, I'm sure others would too) would be part of whatever blue-ribbon committee gets set up. There has to be a strict "No Umile policy" (sorry Coach, you got your one chance, and blew it). Bob Norton would be welcome. Gordie Clark, Ralph Cox, Rod Langway, Marc Hubbard even ... and you'd have to give an interview to Coach McCloskey, if for no other reason than to publicly acknowledge just how poorly he was treated by the prior regime. Ditto Borek, but also invite anyone and everyone from across the hockey universe to apply.

To paraphrase from The Godfather (not Da Godfaddah) ... this time, we settle all UNH family business, once and for all.

I didn't see anything in this morning's UL on the Providence loss, so they've probably already shifted to PSU coverage. ;-)

There was a SCANT article about the game; I tweeted to Alex Hall and asked if he planned on interviewing MS7 about the season...there needs to be some kind of commentary on this season...doesn't there??? (hint: accountability is a b***h) And, GO PSU!

Just out of curiosity, who might be an acceptably qualified candidate right now for MS's job should it open up. No I am not available nor qualified, lol. Not trolling, just wondering

Hopefully someone that has no ties to the University. This seems to be working out at other Colleges and i'd be very dissapointed if that's not the route they would take.

Are you sure you're not qualified? I mean the bar is pretty low...

Find me an up a comer in the USHL or another college "recruiter" and swing for the fences.

I second the upper echelon USHL/BCHL coach with recruiting connections from outside the UNH frame. Second choice would be an up and coming NCAA assistant. I don't have any names currently myself but there are plenty of people here who could probably name a top 5 list pretty easily.

I say a top level junior coach because they would have first hand experience with the new generation of players coming in. Like it or not, the way the game was coached 30+ years ago is becoming less prevalent. A coach who can reach today's players and motivate them is going to be successful.

Anybody But Mike Souza would not be far from the truth for me. You, me and Bobo could probably do a better job.

If I was the Harold Alfond of UNH, I would drive up to the Downeast yesterday, offer Ben Barr a 10 year, $10 million contract, buy him out of his remaining deal in Orono, and set him up with a cozy place in Effingwoods with lots of privacy for his family to enjoy for the foreseeable future. Throw in a membership at Abenaki, a hockey school deal in Durham for the summer (if he wants/has time for it?), and a seat on the boards of a choice local company or two. Top it off with a monthly dinner with the Governor at Wentworth By The Sea, a mini-yacht on Lake Winnipesaukee, and a signed framed photo of Dick Umile and his SS Turtleneck on the shorefront of Bow Lake.

OK - scratch that last bit.

I think that dog hunts. Unless your boy digs Pat's Pizza, in which case, we're back to Square One ...

I like Chuck's plan... Ben Barr has been a known commodity at getting talent and it would be fun to weaken Maine at the same time... It isn't realistic and man would it make the rivalry and these boards super fun again.

According to today's Union Leader, Cashman (5-24-1) was extended through 2028. Five more seasons after this one.

Does that mean MS7 is due to get an 11 year extension for his 11 win season? Say it ain't so, 'Ref!! ;-)
