UNH Men’s Hockey 22-23: the start of something new, or more of the same?

Looks like the Wildcats are the winners of the 2022-2023 Charlie Holt #HockeyEastAward for Team Sportsmanship. I suppose that's a good thing but I think there are 11 people affiliated with Hockey East that care about this meaningless award (the ADs) and I hope it isn't used to strengthen Snoozas case to stick around one more year.

Edit: Admittedly I didn't even look up what the criteria for this award. In case anyone is interested "This award is given to the team which receives the lowest average penalty minutes per game over the course of regular season Hockey East play"

Has UConn ever won this award? Only asking because you could make an argument that Souza has won more in his UNH tenure than UConn has with Cavanaugh ;-) ;)

A few years ago, post-Charlie Holt, UNH was known as the SMT’s (the Skating Mother Teresa’s) for our lack of penalty minutes.

UConn "won" it back in the Season That Time Forgot. Fitting, I suppose, for a time when any human contact was looked upon harshly. I hope Luce has his award displayed prominently in the UConn Men's Hockey trophy pillbox.

End of 1 PC 1 UNH 0. PC 13 SOG UNH 9
PC killing us at the dot winning 12 out of18 FO's (Thanks Ryan)

HR live perspective: a frenetic pace PC has a great passing game and Fess has kept it close. Just a couple of decent chances fir UNH. Cats need to play more like a team than they have of late...its obvious the skill deferential at times but we'll see...

Well it had to happen at least we made it a game. That said...when will we UNH fans have something to look forward to?

Good to see you tonight ATW always a pleasure...

Onto...Watching everyone else in the post season but your team. Again.

let's goooooo Bruinnnnnnssss!!!!

Enough. I liked Souza as a player. The ecosystem at UNH Hockey is broken. I have resigned before in my career when the fit wasn’t right. Maybe he should do the same, If not…

Athletics should not define a university; but if you have teams, the goal should be to win…or at least to compete. UNH hockey has done neither. Make a change…make a commitment…or get rid of the program. If the new AD doesn’t have the drive…she should never been hired.

For sure, if MS7 doesn't have the class to step aside from a job that's clearly over his head, the AD will be on the spot.

You can't say I didn't give him a chance, an out if he could win a few in March. He didn't, so if he won't quit, fire him.

UNH Men’s Hockey 22-23: More of the Same

So if Souza is staying he needs to purge some players that are dead wood like Carval did when he took over UMASS. I also looked at next years recruits and there's a few good ones. My question is why are you bringing an NAHL kid in with 20 points in 55 games. The kid is 21 now. there must have been better options than that. Too many 3rd and 4th liners over the last 5 years and that's why their in this dilemma.

We wouldn't have been here the last 8 years if not for Umile and Scarano.
We wouldn't be left hanging now this next few days but for Scarano doubling down on his good old boy back slappin, who cares how competent you are by extending Souza on his way out the door.
Without that, we would have only wasted 8 years of good will, not the potential 9 years.
For perspective, all the kids recruited now were six when UNH was last relevant. We're the Ferris State of the east.

Let's hope AD Rich and Souza can reach a buyout where he can go on and start the rest of his career.

Two additional points.
JB, why are you only counting five years. The whole purpose of this stupid plan was to put Souza into the seat three years early and put his stamp on the program. Why not make him own those years, too, where he was the Master Recruiter redoing the program as he wanted it, the Head Coach in waiting. It's not like he wandered in in 2018 and was stuck with the existing rot.

Second, here's the sum total of Souza's career.
12 Years
2 season over .500
(one in the ECAC, one in the Tier II AHA conference)
A single year above 7th place in any league.

2011-12 Brown 9-18-5 12th place
2012-13 Brown 16-14-6 7th place
2013-14 Conn 18-14-4 3rd in AHA
2014-15 Conn 10-19-7 9th in HE
2015-16 UNH 11-20-6 10th
2016-17 UNH 15-20-5 10th
2017-18 UNH 10-20-6 11th
2018-19 UNH 12-15-3 8th
2019-20 UNH 15-15-4 9th
2020-21 UNH 6-14-3 10th
2021-22 UNH 14-19-1 9th
2022-23 UNH 11-21-3 10th

Yesterday's loss gave UNH 21 losses, the fifth most losses in any season (he's also been part of three 20 year seasons).

While I agree, Carvel came in and brought in upper tier players that took one year to acclimate then they were off to the races... Who is Souza going to be able to convince to come here having not developed a single player to the NHL level or even the upper reaches of the AHL in his tenure? Gildon and Crookshank are the only two players he can claim and unfortunately it looks like Gildon is not going to make that next step. Crookshank still remains to be seen, his lost season injury set him back but it's looking like he might end up in the Poturalski boat (good, but not quite good enough). What players that "move the needle" now are going to look at playing under Mike Souza as a positive in their long term goals? I still believe that UNH is a great option for players, the additional funding to rebuild the guts of the Whitt for the players benefit will help with recruiting for sure. However, right now you have a giant "sore thumb" of a head coach that has no track record of success in win/loss or talent acquisition/development. No amount of weight rooms, player lounges, and locker room improvements will take the stink off that.

As I said before, I expect one or both of the assistants to be jettisoned in a self preservation effort by our head coach. As much as I am championing the effort to move on now vs next year, I have no hope that will happen.

Excellent points here and I hope those of you who feel strongly will send these to the AD. Don't expect a reply and don't think your words will have no impact. She absolutely has to know how disgruntled most of the fan base is...

Get ready for at least another year of this and DB you are prob correct that another IF I had this...(smaller ice) and IF I had that (new assistants) etc I'd be successful kind of scenario. Sat across from the team most of the evening last night. It was nice to see them engaged in the game and the.most active coach? Glen Stewart.

Heck give Stewy the reigns next season while looking for someone to dig out this mess. We cant even say we are "rebuilding" like Maine and Vermont (and good for you UVM)! How many seasons can you say you are rebuilding???

Sick of the mediocrity thats allowed at UNH. 42% win ave overall in Souzas tenure (if I have that right and Im prob being generous?) and btw same as Herrions (and the UML bball coach was about the same pointed out during that game). Whatever...

UNH..if you're listening...time for a change. The sooner the better. Nice guys finish last...this has never been more true...

Perhaps there will be a shifting of players/recruits who knows? You are absolutely correct..need to bring in a higher skill level. Who are you referring to as possible "good ones" for next season if I may ask?
