HR's pathetic predicts for tonight, no scores tho:

BU v UVM
MC v BC*
UConn v UML
NU v PC (Levi needs to be ON big time tho)

*Going to this one...

One of these coaching records after 5 seasons is not like the others...

Feels like if they were going to make a coaching change they’d have done so already. How long did Albie last after BU was eliminated last year? Tony Granato was out quick.

Once we learned he had another year left on his contract I think we all knew he’d be back no matter how bad a season it was (and it was real bad)

I’m just trying to figure out how long I keep telling myself there’s a chance they finally do it

The first bold answers the question in the second bold. If I remember the most recent extension correctly then at least another two seasons.

So two more seasons BEYOND the just completed season? I thought that the two seasons included the just completed season, so when it rains it pours.

I like Sean’s cumulative first-five-year graphs as they rub out MS7’s second year 0.500 season.

No, Delta Bravo (below) said the extension in 2022, as Marty was out the door, extended the original contract's end from 2023 (in which case AD Rich would have had an easy call), to 2024.

So either they buy out the last year, or he's gone in 2024. I can imagine perhaps there are discussions about reducing the buyout, as Souza may want to get an earlier start on a new job, that salary would fill the gap of the reduced buyout. Depends if Souza can find a soft landing spot, scouting for a pro team, or as a HC at a boarding school. That would suit his skillset better.

From what I can find, the 2017 salary was $108,700 with him being announced in March 2018 that he was head coach. Thinking this through, it is likely the HC stuff began with the state fiscal year

2018-2019 Year 1
2019-2020 Year 2
2021-2022 Year 3 signs extension for 2 years
2022-2023 Year 1 extension
2023-2024 last year of extention

I would not be surprised he has a year left after this year. 2 contracts = 5 years
In 2018 he signed for 5 years, after year 4 (last season) the extension was signed to add year 6.

Per the contract if UNH was to move on from him it would be more fiscally beneficial to UNH to do so now as opposed to after this season.

It makes my blood boil how Marty just wanted to make sure "his guys" got golden parachutes that were totally unearned. He deserves to be booed if he ever shows his face in Durham again.

Right. That timing makes sense.

BU announced Coach O'Connell would not be back 18 days after BU lost to UConn in the Hockey East Quarterfinals.

Do you know something? Other than getting the sense that AD Rich “gets it” I’ve heard nothing. UNH has zero history of firing coaches because of W - L record.

BTW I can do without the 9, 10, 11 teams qualifying, but having a NESN game last Wednesday was a nice bonus. Today’s round with four one and done games is NESN gold.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make anyone sad.

I've been using cumulative records because I think they're a better overall long term indicator of coaching. Plus, they make for better comparisons and graphs.

Sean

Agreed. Regarding Albie, do you know his contract status when released?

Agreed. If the AHA can do it, why cannot HEA, especially given the quarters are now one and done.

If UNH is to terminate Souza they must give him a 30 day notice and pay him out a years salary unless they come to a different agreement. I imagine we would be hearing in the next week or two if that happens. My breath is not being held.

No, but it was widely assumed he was at the end of his contract. That said, CHN had several articles about contracts and Coach Pearson's status with Michigan. According to them the end of a contract does not end the coach's employment, s/he must still be officially terminated by the school.

So I'm guessing IF UNH is going to make a move to get out from under the current situation, they will want to do so as soon as possible, as the year's salary obligation would presumably require them to give that notice first, as (worst case scenario) it would provide UNH with cost savings on the tail end of his deal next year (April-May-June '24). That could be a pretty significant high five-figure number, right? Then, the onus is on Souza to start planning for his next job ASAP before word hits the street that he's in the process of being fired, so he quietly explores a range of prep coaching or pro scouting job options, and will probably want to start fresh early next preseason (September?). Then the buyout happens at a further reduced sum (maybe 50% of next year's salary - basically April to September '23) and UNH isn't out all that much in the end - virtually a period overlapping the late Spring/Summer months - a much smaller pill to swallow.

Long and short, I think you're right - next week or two tops IF it's gonna happen. My breath isn't being held either ...
