UNH Men’s Hockey 22-23: the start of something new, or more of the same?

Are you sure you're not qualified? I mean the bar is pretty low...

Find me an up a comer in the USHL or another college "recruiter" and swing for the fences.

I'm pretty sure. On the bench decades ago assisting with a squirt team I doubt would qualify me. Although we did win the NE tournament that year (albeit without Connecticut or Massachusetts's entries)

Anybody But Mike Souza would not be far from the truth for me. You, me and Bobo could probably do a better job.

If I was the Harold Alfond of UNH, I would drive up to the Downeast yesterday, offer Ben Barr a 10 year, $10 million contract, buy him out of his remaining deal in Orono, and set him up with a cozy place in Effingwoods with lots of privacy for his family to enjoy for the foreseeable future. Throw in a membership at Abenaki, a hockey school deal in Durham for the summer (if he wants/has time for it?), and a seat on the boards of a choice local company or two. Top it off with a monthly dinner with the Governor at Wentworth By The Sea, a mini-yacht on Lake Winnipesaukee, and a signed framed photo of Dick Umile and his SS Turtleneck on the shorefront of Bow Lake.

OK - scratch that last bit.

I think that dog hunts. Unless your boy digs Pat's Pizza, in which case, we're back to Square One ...

The Benster lives for Pats Pizza, and he gets fed all he wants. Sorry boyz :>)

According to today's Union Leader, Cashman (5-24-1) was extended through 2028. Five more seasons after this one.

Does that mean MS7 is due to get an 11 year extension for his 11 win season? Say it ain't so, 'Ref!! ;-)

While I agree 5 years is a bit much for an unproven commodity in Reid Cashman. He did come in to a program on the decline in Bob Gaudets late years. He lost a full season of play and recruits to COVID when the ivies didn't play at all. At least you can see why he got a bit more of a leash to work with, although a pretty long one.

5 years for Cashman seems long.... HOWEVER.... this is the end of "year 2".

Then look at this background

College Hockey Player
Bounced around AHL/ECHL/Europe
5 years assistant at Quninnipiac - always +.500, 3 RS, 1 LT, 4 NCAAs, 2 Runners Up
2 years AHL Assistant (Hershey) once playoffs R2 exit
2 Years NHL Assistant (Washington) twice 1st Metro Reg Season, R1 exit

Hmmm....

Compare

College Hockey Player
Bounced around AHL/ECHL/Europe
2 years ECAC Assistant sub .500
2 years AHA/HE Assistant sub .500
3 years HE Assistant sub .500 - 3 20 loss seasons
5 year Head Coaching Contact - 4 sub .500 and one at .500
extended after year 4 for 1 year...

Everytime the subject of unsuccessful coaches who somehow stick around WAY too long comes up, it reminds me of my HS Football head coach who was a fixture at his alma mater for well over two decades, and was apparently approaching his 100th career victory towards the end of my time at the school. The local paper ran a weekly story about how he was at 99 wins, and the next weekend could bring the magical 100th win of his "legendary" career. This went on for 3-4 weeks before he sealed the deal, got the whole "carried off the field by his players treatment", etc. and bold headlines in next Thursday's weekly edition.

I was always pretty good with numbers, and it seemed like Coach was around forever, but we didn't have the Internet around back in the '70's to chronicle the program's history, but it seemed like he was averaging about 4 wins a year over about 25 years - not difficult math - and back then we were playing 9-10 games tops a season. Checked in once afterwards with an assistant who I got along with, raised this math thingie, and he laughed and said Coach was closing in on his 200th loss in a few years at his current rate.

I probably shared this before when we were having fun with Coach's NRN, but Umile was at least way on the plus side ...

Then again, there are some fans who are enamored with this resume from an assistant coach:

2003-04 8-28-4
2004-05 11-23-3
2005-06 11-23-2
2006-07 16-18-2
2007-08 13-21-3
2008-09 9-21-2
2009-10 16-19-2
2010-11 25-10-4
2011-12 18-12-4
2012-13 15-17-6
2013-14 8-22-3
2014-15 19-19-2
2015-16 11-20-6
2016-17 15-20-5
2017-18 10-20-6

2020-21 6-14-3

I guess even a broken clock is right twice in twenty years.

Oh yeah? Who might.that be...do tell.

Hint... 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 records look shockingly like Umile's last three years (3 straight 20 loss years)...

That is going to be one hot game on Saturday v BC...on that small surface, most likely a sell out. Almost tempted to go but my former school is in the NH state championship and they are playing at SNHU so might catch that instead.

Would like to see MC advance..good for Scott (not Scotty) Borek. IF I have this right he
certainly worked the portal to his advantage and its paying off. As it was discussed on the MC board BC is playing pretty well- prob the best game of the 4.

(Hey Snives watching Warren Foegele tonight v the B's-he's had some good moments so far! Wild to think he was on that 2015 team ('Cats) is doing pretty well for himself with a 3 year 8.2 mil contract...not happy they beat our Bruins tho!)

Ps On another totally unrelated note, I see Dartmouth just extended Reid Cashman's contract as per Twitter

Warren Foegele has now blown by Kevin Dean, once considered a possible heir to the Umile throne, for 13th in NHL games played by UNH alums, with the probability of passing Jaime Hislop for 12th place before the season is over. Foegele was wallowing on the bench and the fourth line as a sophomore at UNH when he decided to leave Dodge at the end of fall semester.

Started an 'off season thread' if ya feel like we need a 'change'...ha!

HR: “Well, posters, I guess that you will be leaving this thread now?”

Posters: “Oh, I don’t know, there are still a lot of questions to be answered here.”
