UNH Men’s Hockey 22-23: the start of something new, or more of the same?

Hockey East commish Metcalfe was in the house last night we noticed sitting near us. Hope he enjoyed the game. Here's what's gonna happen: UNH runs the table all the way through to Tampa and wins it in OT over former HE foe Notre Dame. UNH athletics uses some of the funds for the improvements to build a NEW statue in front of the whitt that features Marty Scarano, Dick Umile and Mike Souza arms linked to celebrate the incredible Cinderella story! I'd donate to that...Next up, a MOVIE. Who's playing who?

'Ref, sometimes you surprise me, in very surprising ways, too. This is a GREAT idea. Work out some of the details first, get back to me in a few weeks, and we may be able to ride this pony home to a WIS summer story!!

Seriously tho, I hated seeing the looks on the boys faces as they skated around in their salute to the fans they always do. They deserve better..

Maybe they should've played better/tried harder, etc.? Watched the Red Wings crap the bed earlier this week in Ottawa, lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, pretty much ending a nice bounce-back into contention story. Their Captain signs an 8 year deal the next day, and then weeps in public at a presser when they trade his bestie (Bertuzzi) to the B's for draft picks. By comparison, GM Yzerman didn't shed a tear in public after their '97 limousine tragedy (when he was Captain) that cost them their best defenseman's career (and almost his life), and then a few years later saw a teammate almost die on the bench mid-game. Life isn't supposed to be easy, good things are to be earned.

Parts of the hockey world - along with the rest of the world, especially academia - are going in a very beta direction, but you still need alphas to win in this sport - unfortunately, for both UNH and DRW.

Wake me in time for the MBPBEGAM round, willya Snives? ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........................

Excuse me while I go backward for a moment but that line juggle last night made me nuts. You find 12 guys who seem to have chemistry and they win a bunch of games that you didn’t think they would, and then you change it up. WHY? WHY oh WHY!
In my mind another bigger loss than most seem to notice was the 2 game absence of Mr. Jenson. While we have a good group here, I believe that he is clearly the most consistent game in and game out. Most physical for sure, watch him (next year) next game. Strong in the corners, great out n front, just an under noticed solid presence.

Glad to hear someone else feels the same way about line changes. And agree...Nikolai is missed. Can't figure out exactly how we finally get some stem up and in two games its like that never happened.

To quote a much overused phrase (thats already being used from today's UL story) its the "second season". I think that and "its hard to beat a team 3 times" is as cliche as you can get but...we are still skating.

Ps UVM Just beat a team 3 times for the cheap seats in the back...

Add the Bentley Falcons to UNH and your Dead Wings. Their best three players have left in the portal the past two years. So much for a new rink on campus, which was supposed to provide recruiting magic, like the Jumbotron at UNH (I was for it before I was against it).

I had a dream last night that the UNH construction crew began dismantling the glass and boards even before the players and coaches finished their handshake line. Before the dream was over all of the ice was mysteriously gone, exposing concrete, rebar, etc. I am still hoping that the AD reads this thread.

Oh, nooooooo! Worse than last year. But, will make our run to the HEA and NCAA championships even more compelling and worthy of a Hollywood film.

I'm loving the creative energy coming off you and 'Ref today, Snives. Throw in those lovestruck kids down in Jamaica, and this place is starting to feel like Ground Zero for some super-de-duper sarcasm in the coming weeks/months. Love it!!

To think ... Hockey East teams play like, 27 games apiece, all to decide (1) seeding, and (2) which six teams will need to win an extra game on their way to the title that none of them is gonna win. Marvelous. Kudos, Nigel!! /rolleyes

One of my favorite morning cartoon shows when a toddler was Top Cat, which also might be considered?

Ooh love that! Having a hard time reading the Twitter posts that read UNH clinched 10th. Somehow the term clinched just doesn't seem like a term I'd use. Finished 10th..?

Our team may not be very good, but at least our record is better than the Catamounts’. :-)

Instead of the excitement of letting 9-11 play for the right to a one-and-done game, how about having the bottom one or two teams be relegated to the Atlantic Hockey Conference, and the top 2 Atlantic teams move up?

UNH and Vermont, you're playing in the AHA next year, RIT and AIC, you're the new Hockey East teams for 2023-24.

We could call it the DiGregorio Cup even. I'm in for this, would definitely liven up some of those late season games at the bottom of the table.

Oops ... bottom of the standings. ;-)

The AHA actually eliminates teams at the end of the regular season.

Congratulations to Coach Herrion.

America East isn't a very good league, but building a team essentially from scratch in the offseason, getting a 3 seed and then advancing is worth a salute. It wasn't pretty today but that's the way the last 12 months have been.

So is Souza expected back next year?

None of us here know for sure. He has 1 more year left on his contract. So unless he gets bought out (which I personally think is doubtful) he will at least be back for next season? Esp after that uptick in results in the second half of the season.

UNH is not BU or BC...they don't have a track record of letting coaches who don't perform well (win games..go to regional etc) go. One would expect it as this being his 5th season as HC (8th overall) and he hasn't won anything measurable and has had only 1 season at .500 (correct if wrong) I remember hearing former AD Marty S saying something regarding Dick Umile's tenure "it is the body of work that is most admirable", as he reflected on his 28 year span at UNH. So if one was considering Souza's 'body of work' to this point...there is no comparison. To be fair, sure, times have changed since those UNH 'hey days' as far as parity goes, etc, but, it is what it is where Souza is concerned.

Anyway that is my take on it. Now if your question was should he return? That's a different take and you'd get something more definitive!! 'If I were a betting person' which I sometimes am...I'd bet he'll return next season, with a renewal based off next season's results.

Ps I'm trying to be nice here. I have always wanted to see him succeed. He "bleeds blue" as they say so there's that which favors heavily to the UNH powers that be...at least I think it does.
