UNH Men’s Hockey 22-23: the start of something new, or more of the same?

Trivia Question: What did last night's referee and UNH HC MS7 have in common in April 1999?

They played against each other in the FF? I dunno...am trying to find a link. Snively65 surely you know the answer! On another note, I see that UNH alum Austin Block is coaching in the JR. Monarchs program...

Ps highlight of the nite was being asked by a couple of MC students sitting in front of us if we were watching our grandson out there....

Funny you say that Ref! Reminds me of a story from waaaaay back when, I believe the start of the 2000-2001 season. My better half and I traveled to Ann Arbor to watch UNH play in the Ice Breaker Tourney at Yost. We were talking to some Michigan fans during warm-ups who asked if we had a son on the team! At the time I we were in our late 20's, so we found that pretty amusing, and had asking each other do we really look that old!?! The best part, UNH went on to win the tournament making the long drive worth it!

That's a great story; I got asked that alot (do you have a son on the team) awhile back when I was 'younger' haha. What kind of bugs me is the 'why are you a fan of them when you don't have any real ties to UNH' which to that I usually say, well, I put over 100k into the school while my kids were going there so I think that qualifies me....ha! (Mr. HR is a UNH grad; I went to lowly PSC) They just don't get why we go to so many games etc (and some of you might wonder the same of me haha) but I bet if they could travel to see their fav team play (regardless of level) they'd do it in a heart beat. Whatever!

And call me crazy I just bought BC tickets. As a rule I am not a fan of the Conte but, got other biz in the Boston area that day so why not...

You just reminded me, Chuck. Did you guys happen to notice #8 for BC? There's a connection to April 1999 there too.

Arrrgghh! How could we ever forget Marcus Gustafsson’s OT GWG in the Anaheim NC game? :-(

Also, HEA ref Marty Hughes scored PPG for BC in 2-1 loss to Maine in 1999 semi-final game. You were on track, Ref. :-)

All three guys (kudos J.D.) scored goals for their respective teams in Anaheim that weekend.

Alas, some were more important than others ...

Going back to the BC game, if Fessy doesn't give up that extremely soft goal from the corner to make the game 1-1, we're looking at a different outcome. It seemed to suck the wind out of UNH. They fought back and I thought played a great 3rd, but couldn't find the net (which we always knew would be their biggest issue this year)

Missed the 1st period of the Merrimack game and was about to turn it on when I got a text that said 'don't bother' but sounds like just a brutal start for Muszelik. He's a Freshman, and those starts happen. I'm giving him a pass.

I'd like to see how UNH does when the goaltending lives up to expectations. That should be a position of relative strength and they're 2-0 when it hasn't been an issue. Offensively I've seen signs of a better, faster forward group that will create more scoring opportunities than last year. If they start finishing at a modestly higher rate perhaps UNH could look at an 8th place finish. I don't really see any path to 7th which could be their absolute ceiling if everything clicks (still hard for me to accept this) but they'll be a more watchable team this year mark my words.

Yup, 6-1 loss at Lawlor just one game, like Maine’s 5-1 loss to Bentley in Waltham. No worries.

Not sure I'd say "No worries" but you're right Snives, it's just one game, early in the season to boot, so we shouldn't panic. I'm not sure as to the the strength of Army this season, but if we lay another egg tomorrow night, then it's time to start to worrying!

Game predicts are fun! In addition to the score, hows about doing a goal tender predict as well? We should...beat Army. God I hope so. I'm sure the team wants to show they can turn around a bad night (which everyone has!!). So, who's Coach gonna start in net? I think he should start Muszelick. Just to show him he has faith in him and wants to give him another shot at it (MC game is NOT on him btw...) But, my head says he will go with Fezzie which is fine too. Soooo here's what I think will happen:

UNH 4 Army 1 Goalie: Fessenden

Something has come up and can't go Sunday to the BC game...if anyone wants my 2 tix (for free) just let me know. Happy to transfer them. It's game day...let's gooo 'Cats!

@ UNH 5 Army 3

Fessenden will be in goal tonight. No reason to reward a frosh for a subpar performance, regardless of whether the team laid an egg in front of him. Messaging to everyone should always be, "Just play better, win games, and you'll get your ice time."

How about this classic old Clancy Brothers w/Tommy Makem ditty for UNH's new goal music?

Someone could come up with new lyrics tailored for a hockey setting ...

Which is what MS7 normally does (or says he does); whoever earns it, gets it. I didn't see it as a 'reward' per se...but agree totally. And I'd expect the same for Sunday; best goal tender out first; regardless. At this point in their careers they knows the level of competition...Was thinking he would get another chance against a team that isn't...BC. Not that the plan is to platoon them anyway.
