UNH Men’s Hockey 22-23: the start of something new, or more of the same?

Only for hockey season do I subscribe to the UL as there doesn't seem to be any real info coming out anywhere else regarding UNH hockey. Here's the quotes from the game yesterday, if you don't get/read that paper:

LOL 'Ref - it's not like you have to apologize - despite its more centrist RINO leanings these days, it IS the state's biggest, most relevant newspaper still. AND they hate DJT as much as you do. No one's gonna pull your pension for reading it! ;-) ;)

Anyway, thanks for sharing (I subscribe to the UL as well). *Interesting* batch of MS7 quotes:

"All the seniors were the guys that competed", Souza said. "We've got to get more guys to compete at that level."

Yeah, methinks that might be a good idea. There's a scoreboard up there for a reason, after all ...

"I just didn't like the way we lost today; the second and third goal, especially," Souza said. "You're still in the game and then you give up two quick ones like that. It's unacceptable."

... because it's more acceptable to get your doors blown off right out of the chute? Or to play it close and gack it up at the very end?? HINT: losing really shouldn't be tolerated as an option, HEA standings do not award points for "moral victories". Grading your losses on a curve kinda defeats the whole purpose of the exercise, doesn't it? Really just p!$$ poor messaging ...

"They've got more skill and then they outcompeted us."

... or to paraphrase, "I can't recruit, I can't coach or teach, and I'm not too good at motivation either."

Wonder what his players make of that last comment, especially?

MS7's coaching career (be it at Brown, UConn & now UNH) has been SO steeped in losing that he's saying harmful things like these, probably without even realizing it. And that's when he's not just regurgitating coachspeak platitudes about "compete levels" and "getting better every day", etc. I'd call him a one-trick pony, but I'm not even sure what that one trick would be?

Bring on the other cupcakes in HEA so UNH can flip that scoreboard stat a bit.

Remember WIS Law of Cupcakes 1.0, e.cat ... if you can't spot the cupcakes on your schedule, then YOU are the cupcake!! St. Lawrence and Army are already in the satchel, and after that, there is UVM I suppose. UMaine split with Quinnipiac this past weekend, so (as predicted) it looks like they've already caught up and passed UNH in only Coach Barr's second season.

The CT River Border Battles look like they should settle the title for '23 HEA Basement Dwellers.

Hard to spot cupcakes when you are preseason 9th in the league. But of the other preseason polling, looks like its one weekend first semester, and then end of season Feb/March.

Vermont (preseason 10th) Nov 11 & 12 and March 2.
Maine (preseason 11th) Feb 17 & 18
Merrimack (preseason 8th) Feb 3rd

Uconn and Lowell were preseason 7th, but U.Conn is 6-1-1 and Lowell is 4-2

It is hard to win with good but not great freshmen. Early season results could ordinarily be excused, provided there is growth. I'm not sure if UNH has the leeway for another ordinary "rebuilding" off year when that has been the past decade.

"All the seniors were the guys that competed,” Souza said. “We’ve got to get more guys to compete at that level.” (HR comment: well, hopefully that will come, but, tell me, they did seem to compete pretty well opening weekend. I know...the competition wasn't BC, who, despite what some say is a 'weak team' by BC standards. To that I'd say they (BC) will compete easily in the top 4 of HE as they get deeper into the season... Our guys are still fresh outta jrs I guess and need to develop a stronger compete level? Can this be developed?)

“I just didn’t like the way we lost today — the second and third goal, especially,” Souza said. “You’re still in the game and then you give up two quick ones like that. It’s unacceptable.” (HR comment: glad I missed it...welp, if we can improve on that kind of stuff for this coming weekend???) We don't like losing either, but, can stomach it if effort is there?

And:

“They’ve got more skill and then they outcompeted us,” Yep, I guess they did...and guess you'll have to develop the talent you have? So much I wanna say here but I will just leave that right there.

To your point Snively65 about reading the recruit pages yes, they are more upbeat and encouraging. And personally, despite where we are right now, I remain hopeful that as the season progresses there is true development in this team that is visible. Maybe it shows itself in the W column. That's my current bar. I guess.

And it all crashes down
And you break your crown
And you point your finger, but there's no one around
Just want one thing, just to play the king
But the castle crumbled and you're left with just a name
Where's your crown, King Nothing?

Very well stated, db62. Nice to have a little Metallica musing on a Monday morning ...

I'm a little concerned about the lyrics a little later though and how that would play in to this saga...:)

"Careful what you wish, careful what you say.
Careful what you wish you may regret it.
Careful what you wish you just might get it"

But at this point, I'm willing to take my chances.

haha Chuck, well, its kind of like when your friends discover you read Playboy, and you insist 'its only for the articles'....Actually I enjoy the UL sports section this time of year coz they cover the OTHER sport of the Gods (field hockey) pretty well. And I am always looking for UNH hockey perspectives so there's that. Really? They hate DJT? I don't read it enough to glean that...but will take your word for it.

Fun fact: when I was in I think 10th grade? I wrote an essay for my English teacher at Littleton High School about how the NBA was going to fare and won an essay contest which was printed in the UL sports section. Then, I wrote Bob Ryan of the 'Round the Rim' Boston Globe fame letters complaining about how he treated the GREAT JERRY WEST. (see, I never fly right do I; love the B's but not the C's). I had 3/4 replies from him as we bantered back and forth. I wish I had those letters!! Typed on that parchment/math paper we used in grade school of all things....To this day I will never understand how I was voted 'most argumentative' in my Senior year while my twin sister got 'most sincere' and cool accolades like that I mean, go figure??? Anyway, useless drivel from me on a rainy day.

I should be counting my blessings that we won at least one of our games this weekend! From what I did watch of the BC game last night seemed like we lost some (?) confidence. Hope that they can put it in perspective and continue to move forward.

Unfortunately that thread has been like that for years now (very Pravda-esque). But its not like anything has changed. Hard to give it much credibility until I'm proven wrong.

This team is the same as the past several seasons, an occasional positive or encouraging game offset by the all to often punch in the face, bringing us back to the reality of where the program stands. If the current trend continues (and there is absolutely NO reason to believe it will not) then AD Rich needs to make a change, which needs to be made sooner rather than later. Does she have the courage and fortitude? Only time will tell, but I'm not holding my breath.

So may appropriate comments. It was painful to watch in the middle of the BC crowd. That said I would call it a poor showing for a 1:00pm Sunday game with no Pats competition. The first period was very hard to watch. The passing was horrendous and it appears they
all need a remedial geometry lesson, add some passing drill Turnovers ruled the day. As bad as the score was you can’t hang it all on The Fess. He totally owns the fourth goal as he send the rebound back to the sender. Most on turnovers and poor play.
Sousa is correct on his senior play observation. Harrison B is really coming on defensively and Chase was all hustle. Needs to work on his face off percentage. Nico D was the extra skater and didn’t see much ice until the third. Really looked solid, would like to see him play more.

Good to see you posting ATW wondered if you would be at the game...yes, would agree; that's all I could watch. I counted how many times we'd finally get in the zone, but it was short lived, I mean, really short lived. How we got those 6 shots on goal (eeekkk) really are mind boggling considering how we weren't able to do much, of anything. I do not hang this on the goal tending...I mean how much can a guy do??? I'm sure none of this is lost on them (hopefully). If we can find some middle ground somewhere in the season I guess that's a victory of sorts. We have matched up well with PC in the past not sure about right now so guess we'll find out. Hope to see you 'round the 'Whitt...

Wrong. MS7 recruited Sadowski's kid (successfully, at least so far anyway). That means things will open up for sure once he can get his hands on the rest of his former linemates' kids - little Sadowskis, Shipulskis, Krogs and Haydars, maybe even a Swain or two, as far as the eye can see.

Then in another 25 or so years, he can get cracking on his linemates' grandchildren ...

That's explainable as a flashback/reference to when some of us were kvetching about forcing MS7's successor into retirement earlier than he apparently had originally planned.

And if so, fair play to Hetfield, he can lay claim to the title of the NoCal Nostradamus. ;-)

The Women's team has struggled for years and is struggling this year too. How bold a move would it be for AD Rich to give both head coaches their walking papers in the same season?

That would be bold, but exactly what both programs need. The time for patience has passed. Bold, strong and inspired leadership is what is needed to get hockey back to where it belongs at UNH. The rebuild will be a long road, so what the heck are they waiting for?

When is the last time UNH replaced a head coach? How many have been replaced in the past forever years?

Exactly. These coaching positions at UNH are for life, and I doubt that any AD will break that history, unless a coach steps over the line in disciplining unruly players. No, no, no, cannot do that.
