UNH Hockey 2023-2024 Season Thread - End Of The Cellar-Dweller Era??

You're probably right Carmine but Mass might give them a run for their money next weekend.

Oh I definitely agree with this..Maine is on shaky ice right now but I wouldn't obviously count them out. UMass isn't a team you take lightly...I think a split is
in order for this one. Both teams are extremely well coached I'd give Maine the edge tho if they come to play.

I wouldn't consider Providence a lock. If UNH losing at Merrimack is considered a bad loss shouldn't a higher ranked Providence team doing the same also be viewed that way?

When you put in that context...yes, I'd agree with that. But don't forget, Lawlor is a 'tough place to play' hahaha

Agree with you too. It’s going to be an interesting couple of weeks. Still a lot to be determined.

Also something sticking in my craw this morning...and not sure it would have made the difference but what happened with getting Hellsten off the ice
earlier? That seemed odd to me..coaching blunder?? Any thoughts about this?

I think given the way UNH had been playing 5 on 5 with BC, and the three previous responses, MS7 was willing to let him stay a bit longer than usual. Then when they needed to get him out BC wouldn’t allow UNH possession of the puck. Once the finally gained it time was dwindling, and well…

My thought at the time was we were competing in the BC end five on five and giving BC, with their skill level, extended time to shoot at an empty net is suicide.

Okay I'll play along with our granite head neighbors. But, lets just "kick it up a notch" with outcomes and points. Top 6, here's mine:

BC 61 points
BU 57 points
ME 41 points
MA 40 points
PC 39 points
UNH 36 points.

Pick yours, closest to the final top 6 standings and points gets...............nothing but an atta boy, or girl as the case might be.

Yeah, I didn't think there seemed to be an 'opportune time' to get him out of there..

Random thoughts:

UNH Wildcat Productions produced a solid Whitt expansion/Key Auto Group Complex video shown on ESPN+ between periods. Gagne, Souza, Witt, Rich contributed. The video contained impressive renderings of the future facility.

Speaking of UNH Wildcat Productions - ESPN+ broadcasts from the Whitt are as good as any. Especially the video quality. Replays are also good although even frame by frame (on a small screen) I still don't know how the the second(?) goal went in.

Krog and the boys! Man that was great. I have to think the team played off the emotion of having those guys in the building. As a fan, a little bitter sweet. Those 25 years ago days are gone. What an amazing time for UNH, HEA, college hockey in general. As mentioned on the broadcast several times, the Whitt was a tough place to play. Coach Giuliano, with all his accomplishments, never won a game in Durham. Hopefully we are at least somewhat back to that. The flip side, as discussed, is talent. Man, the 'cats were stacked. Forget Krog, Souza, Haydar. The top four D were Filipowicz, O'Brien, Bragnalo and Lind. In front of Conklin and Matile. Good lord.

Aw come on, live dangerously! Who's going to the Garden? Who cares about points! Not UNH, since we were so frivolous with earning them
when we coulda! lol But I imagine Snively will love this as he's a stats kind of guy...

Talked to Dick Umile some upstairs before the game...he was impressed with this year's team and felt they had improved immensely. Two older gentlemen were sitting
behind me and when they introduced the 98 team they had alot to say about those heady times...So much about college hockey has changed since those
days, with more changes coming that aren't very 'hopeful' like NIL, the portal etc...the sport you all knew has to be so much different than it was then (obviously)
but what wonderful memories, even with the heart breaks, it must've been...

All we can do is look ahead and believe we are on the right track...I go back to my Shawshank Redemption quote about hope and you can't help but have at least SOME...

Good luck Lady 'Cats today...my first in person game...

Live dangerously? I don’t jump out of airplanes but I do ride a motorcycle up north and 4 wheels down here which believe me is danger personified. I’ll go with stats. Top 4 make it to the Gahden.

There you go! Definitely qualify for living dangerously!

So who qualifies as your team that sneaks into the top 4
But still some will say they werent 'surprised'?

so u sound like u want me to say UNH sneaks into the top 4, no? I don’t know w/o looking if that is even mathematically possible. So I will say no. But I will take NU to win against anyone. So that’s my sneak in team to the Garden that I won’t be surprised to see.

If we are just talking straight teams...not points then UNH could win their way to a Gahden party...Im thinking NU spoils someone's semi final dreams!

NU just 2 points behind us but we have 2 games in
hand.

Way to go Lady Wildcats beating UVM 3-0. Decent crowd some of the usual suspects from the men's game plus a few more. Onto NU for them in the semis. Go 'Cats!

Without looking that's the first HE playoff game of note/win played on Whitt ice in awhile..2014's men's qtr final W over NU that sent us to the Gahden 2 games to 1.

Y'know ... last night's loss got me to thinking ... dangerous, I know, but ... if you are MS7 and your job is on the line as another season peters out down the stretch, what do you do? When nothing else seems to be working?

One word ... Duncan. Oh, and two more words ... no sleepies ...
