Well not to belabor the point (guess I am) this is the cause all our frustration over the past decade plus, the void of top talent coming to Durham. We had multiple opportunities to take the lead last night, but couldn’t bury the puck (Devlin missing on the open side net the most glaring). BC with their talent doesn’t miss those (or very rarely). Not saying we need all of BC’s talent (oh my head they are stacked), heck I’d take one of their top guys at this point. A great effort is entertaining to watch, and last night was that, but the ultimate gauge is winning and UNH continues in coming up short. If you’re happy with “great game”…“nice effort boys”…“we’ll get ‘em next time”… then sure you won’t dissatisfied. But if your ultimate goal is a NC, or at least a team that contends for an NC, unless something with the program changes you’ll be continually disappointed.
Listen, not that it matters but
I am not satisfied with that 'you'll get 'em next time' crap. This is D1 hockey for God's sake, and it's about time UNH finds a way to win
those games and that WILL take a few big players in the line up. Also not missing on obvious chances. At the end of the day BC is just a better team and the fact that we were able
to hang with them and make it a game last night still shows there is something to be said for this team. Even if BC didn't play their best game (I have no idea; I do not really
watch them in other circumstances I know how good they are duh) they still found a way to win. Even if anyone thought that the penalty was 'soft' (no excuse...)
we still didn't defend it either.
I know there are people out there who felt BC played 'down to UNH"
and that's why the game was tight and to them I say stuff it. Of course, if we get beat big on Sunday...I guess they were right because elite teams like BC pick up their game
and if they can't against UNH then that says something about them...not us.
Personally I expect (and I expected this last night to be honest) BC to roll big time Sunday...Speaking of how we have played on the road this season (not good)
A fellow fan just texted me and said we are (drumroll) 26-60-10 on the road (including neutral sites with MS7 at the helm. Good God. That alone should speak to bringing in a new coach but I'm not holding onto that right now.
Unfortunately, when we've needed to get over that hump we just haven't been able to and losing some of the games we desperately needed has been disappointing. Still...we ran with what, 5 freshmen in that line up last night? Not sure on their TOI numbers? Guess I'm trying to find a way to believe that maybe we are turning some kind of elusive corner but we are in the 'not ready for prime time players' group...yet. Who knows maybe we make some noise in the HE's....This season while
not over yet beats the H out of most we've had recently.
I'd like to think UNH is building something FINALLY? And I'm not talking about a new locker room...
We are getting the best mileage (IMHO) out of what we have out there on the ice...and for right now, it's better than being last in our division.
That 1998 team they featured last night is not on the ice right now...but we could use a Jason Krog or two.
Ps...sorry, I'm a big testy from last night still...harrumph.
