UNH Hockey 2023-2024 Season Thread - End Of The Cellar-Dweller Era??

Looks like we’re on the outside looking in for Week 2 of USCHO bracketology. Which team in this bracket can UNH steal a spot from and how do they get there it seems like realistically if we want to sneak in, we’re going to have to take a seed from.

14. Western Michigan
13. St. Cloud
12. Michigan
11. Umass Amherst
10. Providence

The only team over which we have any control in your list is UMass-Flagship.

I should win a beer at Libby’s from Chuck for that answer. :-)

Maybe he can go commiserate with BvR, Jackson Pierson and Damien Carfagna over their decisions to leave town.

Exactly, Chuck. I have been meaning to look up these data for some time now, so here is what I found.

Capt Chase Stevenson, extra Covid year so far at Mac, 9 games, 3 goals, 0 assists, 6 pen mins, -8

BvR, senior year at NU, 33 games, 2 goals, 4 assists, 27 pen mins, -4

Jackson Pierson, extra Covid year at Notre Dame (aka, NICC), 31 gm, 1G+8A=9 pts, 10 pm, -5

Damien Carfagna, junior year so far at Ohio State, 24 gm, 2G+1A=3 pts, 6 pm, -10

Jake Dunlap, sophomore year so far at Ohio State, 22 g, 3G+3A=6 pts, 25 pm, -8

Will Margel, junior year so far at Mercyhurst, 21 gm, 4G+5A=9 pts, 6 pm, -8

Benton Mass, extra Covid year at Minnesota State, 42 gm, 3G+11A=14 pts, 14 pm, +20 (only one to improve his lot by transferring)

others?

Jackson Pierson was the lone bright spot offensively in his last couple seasons. He had maybe...3?... OT winners. UMass for one, maybe another vs. Lowell? Anyone remember? He went home to play his final season at Notre Dame which was hard to fault him for.

Cartagena isn't exactly lighting the world on fire... Trivia question - name another UNH player that transferred to Ohio State?

Dunlap joined Carfagna just last season. But, I believe the answer youre searching for is Danny Dries...

Who, as I recall, ended up on the wrong side of Dick Umile over a downtown excursion late in the year, then sat the NCAA Tournament in 2009 - a tourney which saw UNH come from behind to beat NoDak (the last great moment in UNH Hockey history) before losing by a goal to BU in the regional final...

Hopefully, I got that anecdote correct, but as I remember, that was the impetus for his transfer...

Dries was a good college player. Another 'coulda made a difference' incident of lore in UNH Hockey history.

His cousin ended up having a strong career at Western Michigan, too.

Involving members of the football team or am I making that up?

Pretty cool that Benton also played in the 2022 National Championship (scoring a goal in the semis) in Boston!! BTW my point of posting about Chase
wasn't meant to be a negative thing..just an inquiry. Players leave for their own reasons and for what is right for them and their circumstances.

Can't blame them for taking advantage of opportunities that come up. If they wanted to stay at UNH...they would have. As for a player
like Jackson Pierson, he was able to return to a place closer to home at ND, aka NICC.

Perhaps one of the biggest success stories of a player leaving is Warren Foegele..I mean, could not blame him for leaving and he certainly
landed on his skates, so to speak. In my time TvR, Brett Pesce come to mind as players who moved on and have had success in the
pros.

I remember when I read on Twitter that TvR was leaving, at the time I was a 'newbie' at this kind of stuff and was soooo shocked and upset...
Now I realize obviously that its common place (duh); great players rarely stay 4 years. Glad TyK did; he's an exception of an excellent
'four year guy'.

BU will be lucky if Macklin Celebrini stays past this season being touted as the possible #1 draft pick (if I heard that right the other night during
the NU v BU game) . Sigh, but no worries BU...there's plenty more like him coming in next season...

How many seasons will UMaine have of the Nadeau brothers? (not really up on their stats)

The NoDak win in 2009 was indeed the last great moment in UNH Hockey history (and I think you got the Dries anecdote right IIRC Dan). The irony, of course, is that the NoDak win was just SO out of character for a Umile team - postseason win where they literally snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, last second regulation equalizer, OT winner in short order thereafter, etc. But the euphoria would only last a short time until normal service was restored ...

I think Bradley stays another season because they come up short this season. Josh I think could possibly be here all 4 years because of his size. Most likely though someone will pick him up and he might be gone after 3. Having conjectured all this, it would not surprise me to see the brothers, who have played together their entire life, to want to play in front of mom and dad for all 4 years at Maine. They are, as a manner of speaking, just up the road in Madawaska, lol.

The goalie of the future. Ryan Grout has commited to UNH. A 2007 birth date 16 years old. He has a 2.04 ga and a .931 save percentage. He plays behind a 20 year old Minn St recruit and has better numbers. He's had impressive numbers at every level. Plays in the BCHL for Salmon Arm.

I always thought Benson Mass merely transferred to the UNH of the midwest. MSU went to the NCAA's 8 of 10 seasons, and that season was making its second consecutive appearance in the Frozen Four. 38 wins, far and away the most in the country. Took a 1-0 lead into the 3rd period of the NC game, only to see Denver score three times to win the title. And if you check the box score, the former UNH defenseman was on the ice for each and every one of those three Denver goals. Which just goes to prove you can take the player out of Durham but.....

Wow! Thanks! I really appreciate you putting up these things for us Robert!!

...and as always, Hakstol has that deadpanned look on his face after the goal...ha!

Just to be clear, I purposely did not include UNH skaters who left early to go pro, just those who transferred to another D1 program (Foegele returned to Canadian juniors before turning pro). Because of TyK’s size, I do not think that he any prospects for leaving early to go pro, but I still miss watching him skate as he wheeled and dealed on the Whitt’s former wide sheet.

Thanks, as I had forgotten about that NC game. But at least Benton is having a decent post-college skating career so far in the ECHL with the Stingrays.

yeah I got that just adding some of my own thoughts about players who leave (for any reason). I still think of what 'might have been' (a common UNH hockey fan thought...) if
in 2014-15 season where we might have been/or how far we might have gone if we had CDS, TvR in that mix...not to mention the previous season if TvR had been healthy
for the HE finals. I mean, I could go on...like a 4 year stint for Poturalski etc?? He was easily enroute to be a UNH great...(which I maintain he was).

Just to be in that game has to be a thrill for any player...had been a long time since a UNH'er (in the former sense in his case) had been in that position.

I think that our “last great moment” is subjective, as I looked at the NCAA regional wins over Cornell in 2010 (6-2), over Miami in 2011 (3-1), and over DU in 2013 (5-2) as last great moments as each should have led to the FF had our Cats taken care of business in the second games. Wow, now over a decade since an appearance in a NCAA regional.

Yep, and I have a tee shirt that says "I Was There And All I Got Was This Stinking Tee Shirt"

lol Prob going to be worth a lot of money one day...

Whoa just read the news that Maine's Ben Barr was extended through 2028 for 425K with incremental raises of 15k a season up to end of contract...

What is MS7 currently at? 240K (with bonus money if he wins HE, etc)?

Well good for the Black Bear fans; looks like he doesn't have to win the whole thing to stay after all...(something a Maine fan told me people were worrying about)

Didn't know UMaine had that kind of money (nothing personal).

Sounds like BB is no longer a flight risk from Orono, if he ever were.
