UNH Hockey 2023-2024 Season Thread - End Of The Cellar-Dweller Era??

Cats 7-7-1 at Matthews the past nine years, I think, despite our overall mostly losing records, so have faith!

Really? We've won that many down there? I do believe I've seen most of the losses; for the life of me can't remember a W there (but I do
remember the tie). Not to look past tonight but this is another big series...aren't they all?

Ps...I just had to go back through those 9 years...UGH I knew things weren't, shall we say 'great' but I was not
prepared for just HOW bad it really had been but, while we have defeated NU at home, I am only seeing 2 ties down there.
And some of those losses were major losses; like, 8-0 kind of losses. I must have repressed those past seasons!

Nice meeting you (and your daughter) as well! Glad someone could use those tickets...But I will say that its getting pretty old the up and down
parade (mostly students) in that section. Too many times people standing looking for a seat blocking the view of the game. I know it's tough when you have
student ushers perhaps but last night was the worst for that. Harrumph. Never noticed it when we sat closer to the ice of course. Ho hum..

Remember what I told you about agreeing with everything I say from now on bwahahaha :)

I agree! ;-). The foot traffic was bad in that section last night, so many people have no clue about hockey etiquette. It’s gotten so bad I noticed all the usher have stop signs now. I thought it was just common sense/courtesy, apparently not. However, it’s great to see a bit of atmosphere returning to the Whit; and UNH at the top of the HE standings.

HUGE game tonight points wise with UNH @ 7 and PC @ 6. Obviously toooo early to make any real commentary but looking at the standings it's a hoot that the
teams expected to do the worse are in the top 4; UNH and UVM, respectively...That said I watched some of the BC v UML game when I got home last night (replay;
as if I didn't watch enough hockey already?) and BC has some real fire power and UML not too shabby.

Will be an interesting season in Hockey East!

Ps and how's 'bout those other 'Cats? Beating Yukon love it.

Another solid game. Nate had obviously watched plenty of film and they had us on our heels more than we are use to. We lost this by being continually denied in front of the net. Still a strong effort and tremendously fun to watch.
And a big yes to HR, the student ushers are just way to timid. For me it is the children who gather and then grow in mass until you just can’t see at all. While I certainly get the desire to high 5 the team coming and going, get them in their seats during the game. They aren’t even watching, just gathering, very frustrating.
Jakob is certainly playing at that should get him another start. He continues to be so positionally solid in goal. Not sure if he is riding a new horse or what, but let him ride.
Darn, no games next week.

I’ll play contrarian and guess that TM starts tonight in goal. He was a clear #1 starting the first three games, and I wonder how much JH would have played to date if the former hadn’t been hurt. To me - that says the coaches specifically saw a separation between the two early (right or wrong)…

TM missed last weekend, sits today and next week is apparently a bye week? Long time between reps, so I think they’ll give him another game and then make a decision on how to proceed following tonight, and the next two weeks…

I don’t see JH as stealing games - so, in my opinion it’s been more an impressive defensive effort across the roster. Assuming that continues tonight with TM, I think we’re in rotation mode after the bye. If it’s JH again, then perhaps the net is his until he proves otherwise…

Ps put me down for someone who also dislikes the shootout...but I don't have the dislike for them the way Snively has for the jumbotron ha!

Once upon a time, someone probably figured there was a dearth of penalty shots, so the shootout was born. Of course, totally needless but it was cited as "entertainment" because, well, who really likes tie games? (RS ties never bothered me). Now, if anything, it's cheapened the whole formerly uniquely rare penalty shot experience. So I'm over it, too.

Opinions can change, though. Remember, Snives was for the jumbotron before he was against the jumbotron ...

Ordinarily I would be in complete agreement, and would expect Mucinex to play tonight.

However, we have a head coach who is literally coaching for his job this season, so JH gets the nod.

Dan, it is hard to argue your logic and it may be the best choice either way. However, your comments on the defense are not as spot on for me. I feel they gave TM just as much cover but for whatever reason JH is just looking stronger.
I believe that TM came as a coveted recruit on a full ride. Want to keep him happy and in the house. Either way, Go Cats!

Fair enough. It will be very interesting - and telling - to see who gets the nod tonight. And I think Chuck’s point is a good one - is desperation a factor in short-term decision making? We will see…

Dan, the lines are up and JH will start. No way to know or understand the facts of this. Hoping for the best.
Go Cats!

Agree with Chuck that Souza will ride the better goalie heavily this season. He has to. I seem to remember TM getting the majority of the starts early last season. He struggled mightily (Merrimack away comes to mind) and Messy Fessie took over and held the job basically all year.

'Cats play a stronger second but just can't park it. Has to be tough when the other team gets what you worked so hard for...
I'm going to say it, they are missing Devlin in that mix. Just as a playmaker. Not an excuse just think he's missed. And that PP...

Anyway on to the third...go 'Cats!

Tough loss tonight, but not a disaster. I thought they worked pretty hard, but just wasn’t in the cards tonight. Week off to work on a few things may not be a bad thing.

Would agree. In many ways a typical UNH v PC series; not a ton of goals- ugh no hockey next weekend but think its a good time to assess what's working/what's not.
Still was hoping for at least a split this weekend. The 'Cats are still in a better place than most here would have thought but I'm starting to wonder about our
offense (again). Too soon?

5-4-3-1-0 = goals in each of last five games. Now 23 goals in 8 games, or 2.97 GPG, which projects to about 100 goals for the season, which would be better than in recent years. But I agree that the trend over the past five games should be a concern, as it is asking too much of your goalies to steal you games when you only score 0.5 GPG like this weekend.
