UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Trevor Van Riemsdyk commited to UNH over Providence tonight. Not sure what year it is for. Any thoughts? He is currently playing for the Junior Monarchs.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Being reported on USHR, although I do not know for which year.

Watcher, if you get a chance would you be able to break down who is coming for which year? There have been a few comings and goings lately and I was trying to plug the names and spots in, but you are much better. Does this mean we may see a current committed D choose to go elsewhere?

Still disappointed that Reid won't make it to UNH, but those are the breaks.

WMUR reported on Tuesday of his pending announcement, and interviewed him briefly. Here's the link: http://www.wmur.com/video/22220949/index.html
They said that, should he choose UNH, he would be arriving in 2011.

Great news!

thats a huge loss Carl.I have a gut feeling we might not see Lallagia either.I notice on Heisenburg he's been switched to 2010 or 2011 from 2010.They need to get him in here next year,or you probably won't see him at all.

There was an interview with the Penticton coach where he said he expects Laleggia to play another year in the BCHL. Either way, I expect TVR to play next year in the USHL or possibly another go round with the Jr. Monarchs. Great get though as his numbers look solid (6-20-26 in 20 games).

Laleggia is ready to play right now - if he doesnt end up at UNH this fall, then he probably prefers to play major juniors or some other issue (Reid & Academics) is at play. If, by chance, he was to stay in the BCHL on UNH's request they are taking a big and unecessary gamble...

The Reid situation frustrates me for a lot of reasons - if they lose Laleggia under similar circumstances I'll be very upset...

I agree on all counts. Laleggia seems to be the creme of the crop as far as the incoming defensemen go, and he could make a big impact on the team as early as this fall. No sense in delaying him any longer.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Wow.. this is not what I expected when he deferred.. although his older brother Brodie deferred from Northeastern as well. I want to give credit to UNH for having and sticking to their academic standards, but it still stinks that these kids are committing and not getting in.

So now there is Sorkin, Downing and Silengo coming in as Forwards. Does UNH use this Full Scholarship to grab someone else for '10, or have they anticipated this and already made the fill in with a '11 recruit?

Great to see TVR commit!

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

I wonder - are the admission criteria for UNH student-athletes that much more rigorous than at St. Cloud State University? If so, then the UNH coaches should have some way of evaluating whether a potential recruit is likely to meet the admission standards. Don't they have access to a prospect's GPA, test scores such as the PSAT, and other relevant information? Do we really know that Cam Reid decommitted to UNH in favor of SCSU because he did not meet the academic standards of UNH?

I recall similar speculation arising last summer on this thread regarding Matt White and his decision to decommit. If the following article is credible, then White was subsequently accepted at the University of North Dakota and more recently, at Vermont. There's no way Vermont has lower admission standards than UNH.

It seems to me that there is a lot of information, not available through this thread, which is relevant to understanding why a top prospect reneges on his commitment to UNH.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Different Matt White. Our Matt White went to Nebraska-Omaha.:

Oops. If there's another Matt White out there, some team could field a Matt White forward line.

This really begs the question - don't the UNH coaches have access to academic performance measures of a potential recruit? Or is it the case that Reid and White were bright enough but chose to skate (so to speak) through an easier school?

I believe that is a different Matt White. The Matt White that de-commited to UNH is heading to UNO. He currently plays for Omaha and leads the USHL in scoring.

He should be, he is an 89 playing in a league riddled with 91's, 92's and 93's.

Also playing on the top team. This is a young, skilled league and the older kids are there for a reason

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

Which is ....?

Late bloomers, didn't have deal, couldn't get through clearinghouse, left D 1 and needed somewhere to play etc
Only 2-89 birthyear/over age players per team.

Many teams dont take overage kids at all.

Steel has none, with their D being 2-91's, 3-92's and one 93

Not slamming him for being an 89, he is a very good player but the deck is stacked if you are 20, on a great team and playing against 15-18 year olds. The kid will be 21 in August.

Re: UNH commitments/recruits for 2010 and beyond

I haven't been on here in quite some time but I'm sure it's been brought up that UNH has been on a decline since Brian McCloskey left to coach the women's team...

Recruiting just isn't the same and we're not getting any closer to winning our first title.... the '98 season was it... and a lousy bounce gave Maine (shiver) the win.... I need a shower now....

Being a novice at the ins and outs of Division 1 recruiting, I find your insights helpful. If we all agree that we're talking about the Matt White who reneged on his commitment to UNH and commited to the Univeristy of Nebraska at Omaha, then help me understand what "didn't have a deal" and "couldn't get through the clearinghouse" means. The following article, and others, describe White as a leading scorer in the USHL who has a deal from UNO to become a freshman next year.

Are the Omaha Lancers coming up with deals that sound something like - come play for us and we'll help you get into a Division 1 program, just down the road, with subpar admission standards?

I think USHL teams can have 4-89's
