UNH At The Starting Gate....

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Numbnuts, how many times has UNH won the regular season title and failed to win the tournament? Pretty easy question, even for an uneducated hillbilly.
I'm the numbnuts?
Question for you, how many Hockey East tourney titles does UNH have when they were the # 1 seed?
That's not what I asked. I asked how many times they finished first and DIDN'T win the Hockey East tournament.

This has been very helpful increasing the total number of thread posts. Can we have our thread back after UNH wins both weekend games?

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

This is the breakdown in this whole arguement. If it doesn't mean anything, why does Hockey East bother having a trophy for it?

Does that mean the riverstone is worth something? You can get trophies made for anything you know. :D:p

Ballsy. I don't think UNH takes four points, but if they do and become HE RS champs...what exactly has changed?

Let's put it this way:

Hockey East Regular Season Trophy = $10.

Hockey East Tournament Trophy = $100.

NCAA Regional Tournament Trophy (aka FF appearance) = $1,000.

NCAA Championship: $1,000,000 (I know, huge jump!). It's not that the RS is meaningless - hell, I'd take $10 free anyday! It's that other stuff means more.

Hey, at 10 dollars a pop, UNH is just taking the tortoise approach to the race :)

They would overtake BC in power rankings if they ran the table.would end up 1 seed. They would be picking up Tuc points from BC and then in semi and finals of hockey east

It was kinda a joke, but ya, see WildShawn's response.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Put it a 11. Any thoughts on how far unh could go in power with a bunch of wins down the stretch, like to here other viewpoints

Without looking at any actual data (:D), I would guess no better than a high (7 or 8) 2-seed. Their out of conference showing makes for a lot of poor "common opponent" comparisons, and it's too late to bring their RPI up dramatically.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

In the end, it really doesn't matter if you are the regular season champion or not. Because the #1 seed means nothing other then home ice in the first round and getting to play the #8 seed. And since seeding only matters for home ice, the seeds mean nothing too. A hot goalie, a few bounces, and you can upset anyone. And the only other thing the #1 seed means, it that you will always be the home team, which means nothing when you get to the garden. Because if you have to go through any of the Boston based team, (BU, BC, NU) then you will never have a home ice advantage. And if you have to play BU on the first night, and win, and then have to play BC in the finals (or vice versa), then that is asking a lot of any team. So being the #1 seed means nothing if you make it to the garden. And there should be more of a reward then just one guaranteed round of hockey where you get a true home ice advantage.

if you want to hear anything, check out the PWR thread, Priceless seems to have a good grip on how things could shake down.

Being the #1 or #2 seed is a HUGE advantage over #3 or #4 this year

I'm not saying the seedings don't matter in the matchups. All I'm saying is they don't matter beyond the first round. What's the point of being the highest seed if you aren't actually playing home games on your own home ice. Playing BC or BU at the garden and being the de facto home team because you're the higher seed, doesn't really shake out when you're actually playing in the back yard of those teams. And granted the games aren't at the home rink of one of those teams either, but they might as well be.

You still get a best of three home series and once you get to the garden, as the top seed you choose when you play on the semifinal night and there are little advantages to being the home team (last change on faceoffs)... when unh actually had a formidable fan base, they would routinely out-draw bu and bc at the Garden....

Unh plays one and sometimes 2 games at the verizon each year, it hasn't exactly been much of a home ice advantage for the ncaas.... not too worried about bc, bu or nu having a home ice advantage, if they win its because they're good teams

That's adorable! UNH gets more fans to the Garden than NU... and, as a BU fan, BU-UNH games at the Garden don't exactly feel like home games.

I am not sure what games you might have gone to, or when these games were. I've been a season ticket holder since 1992, and every year since 1997 I have gone to the Garden to see the semi's and finals (if unh were playing). And not once did I look around and feel that the UNH fans out numbered the fans from BU or BC. I don't recall ever playing NU during that time, but I will say there would be more UNH fans then Umass, Umaine, Providence, and Lowell fans. And out of the none boston based teams fans, I would say the only one of those other schools that would be close to matching the UNH fans, were the Umaine fans, they are a team that has fans willing to travel.
But I totally agree that being the "home" team, you do get the advantage of last change and so on. But I just don't feel a home ice advantage when facing either BU or BC in games played at the garden, at least not like you get as the whitt.
