UNH At The Starting Gate....

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

~ DiGi was incredible and showed why he's one of the top 2 goalies in Hockey East.

I think he's a good goalie but didn't think he looked incredible tonight. He was far better in the first game at Conte this year IMO. Gave up a bunch of goals tonight, had a bunch of posts as well, and not many real sparkling saves IMO.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

So, the RS trophy will be at the Whitt tomorrow. Will it be presented on the ice to BC after they win? I would assume not, but when is it presented? After the first quarterfinal game?

I think it's relative. Compared to the rest of the team, Digi was outstanding (kept them in the game until the third). He did have help from the iron, though.

He was terrible last night. Repeat, last night. He couldn't hold on to the pucks into the body, kept droppping soft shots and left big rebounds. His save % was <90.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

BC brought their A-game and dominated in every aspect of the game. UNH will need to bring theirs tomorrow night.
Only positives:

Yes- I don't think I've seen BC play that sharp, that fast since the NC game last yr. They were overwhelming and UNH was underwhelming to say the least. No matter the size of the forward, they had NO issues skating around UNH's D with ease= towards the Net. This happens all the time, BC forwards move and move in straight lines to positions they want to get to without the puck (usually to the front of the net- a new phenomenon in ice hockey) - UNH's skate/drift side to side, hoping something will open up. That's why when BC makes it look pathetically easy to score- it's beacuse they know what's going to occur, the D does not and they end up chasing or watching which they did a lot of last night. (It's called a 'play' by most sporting & coaching standards) I would liken this to UNH's 'play' they ran off the face off against UND in '09 in the NCAA's. UND for a few seconds was chasing the puck around, while UNH knew exactly where the puck was going to be, result, a goal.

Sloppy game for UNH as well- maybe it was the speed that was causing it, see DeSimone's un Sr. like moment trying to go cross ice in his own zone with a guy skating 2 ft from him, on the PP, when the Boards and simply stopping with the puck would have opened up a lot more options. Instead-- well, we know what happened. Lots of passes picked off as well, because there was nothing on them. BC's passes were much more crisp.

On a more positive note! We've all seen them play better, and they can. I hope their Sr. Night is as grand as BC's was last night it has and been a lot of fun watching these guys! They've been part of a great turn in the tide for the program(in the NCAA's) and have gone through some tough personel losses either incoming or outgoing in each yr it seems, yet they are again competing for another RS title- which does deserve some respect at the end of the Day. When you are the top team over a season, in a conference that has won the NCAA trophy in each year- it's a great accomplishment, as it will be tonight!

He also seemed really floppy for part of the game. Looked like it took him a bit to settle down. He did make some good saves but it wasn't the same Digi I had been watching.

Don't think unh has the answers to a faster better coached team your seeing why BC wins championchips, a few BC goals early tonight and unh folds like a cheap suit

I thought he was shellshocked but played his usual good game. The first goal was scored because the BC forward was allowed to wheel around from in back of the net unmolested. Someone tell UNH that if an opposing player has the puck, he can be hit. The second goal was an outright gift.
As far as I'm concerned, he's one of the main reasons that UNH is playing for the RS championship tonight.
And sadly for BC's Krieder, be broke his jaw and is out indefinitely.

One thing on which you and I are in agreement. If UNH pulls out a win tonight, the trophy should read, "2010-11 HE RS Champs: Matt DiGirolamo".

I'm not providing commentary on Digi for his entire body of work, but from what I've seen of him, I can't say I've been all that impressed. In regard to last night, he made a lot of saves, but he was fighting the puck all night IMO and really had trouble handling it. Perhaps that was just a one night thing though. Hard to argue with his save percentage. How has the UNH defense played in front of him?

Hmm I don't see why they wouldn't present it to BC should they tie/win tonight, but I can't remember how it's been handled in the past.

...
Well, it could be presented to UNH. I'm not counting on it -- I'm just saying it could happen.

But if it doesn't, then I think it would be great for the BC fans to see it presented to their team prior to the first QF game next week. (Maybe BC would have the choice as to when to receive it, should they win?)

Don't they present it to them in the locker room if they win it on the road? Has this ever happened? I thought it has but maybe I'm crazy.

I think that last night was the worst game I have seen Digi play all season. That said, I think that his d-men left him out to dry time and again the entire game. BC could easily have scored an additional four or more goals on the bobbles Digi left in front of the net that his d-men were incapable of clearing; add those to the two post and cross bar clanks, and the score could have been 10-0. I do not think that the UNH lines tried to do anything much differently than they have done all season, but BC obviously had studied a lot of film and read every offensive play that UNH tried to throw at them. I do not see much of a different outcome tonight; BC is simply playing awesome hockey right now, and UNH never seems capable of making adjustments, either between periods or between back-to-back games.

But, UNH should be able get to the Garden for the first time in three years and perhaps face BC for the HE tourney championship, assuming that they can get by Merrimack, Maine, NU, whomever. The downside of this scenario is that UNH would retain a 3 seed, and should they get by whomever in the first round at Manchvegas (not likely in that venue from an historical perspective), would probably face BC for a fifth time this season, which is too Bean Potterish for my liking. Better settle for the 4 seed and send BC to St. Louis, just in case.

After what we saw last night, not sure they will get to the garden, if last night was any indication lets just cut our losses. Unh will lose tonight bu will win, unh 3 seed. Series with nu anything could happen. Unh for some reason cannot elevate there game like some if the other clubs, its like they shoot there wads during the season and have nothing to give, coaches definitely bear most of the responsibility. So I do not see a change tonight.

Sorry doomsdayers, but I don't see any realistic shot that UNH doesn't get to the Garden, no matter what happens tonight.

There are four potential first round matchups, UNH has played them a total of 12 times this season, and haven't lost once. Now you think they are going to lose to one of them twice in a weekend? Don't see it happening. Unlike BC in 2009 and UVM last season none of those teams can even whiff the NCAA's. (And don't give me this "Northeastern scares me" nonsense. UNH outscored them 8-3 last weekend even after taking the first period off Friday)

For all the talk of UNH's inconsistency in recent weeks they've been pretty reliable in beating the teams they are supposed to beat. Only the St Lawrence loss could be considered bad, the others have come against teams in the upper echelon of HE, the ECAC and the CCHA.

Perhaps it is correct to be pessimistic about what might happen at the Garden, but I don't see UNH NOT making it there.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

well, i'm headed to this wing place now that my niece (UNH student) told me i would like. I am looking forward to my first Whitt experience and on your senior night no less, should be fun. Good luck tonight 'cats

If you're referring to the poster who calls himself "unh1982" and writes without punctuation or even capital letters, and apparently can't find his way to a online TV program guide, please understand that he is a fairweather fan AT BEST, a "the glass is always half empty" kind of guy.

Still, unh1982's doom and gloom aside, if how you're trending is any indication of future performance, then UNH's future looks bleak beyond the Garden. It's not to late to change that trend.

We'll need more than that, my friend. See you tonight between the 2nd and 3rd.

Sorry for leaving out capital letters and occasional commas but it is a pain in the butt to type on a cell phone, furthermore I am not a fair weather fan . Sorry they were in correct about the correct channel on dish. The main topic should be unh inconsistent play, I call it like I see it. **** I hope they do win tonight and yes frustrated like hell there not peaking but facts are facts. I hope they win tonight and you can laugh at me.
